TABLE OF CONTENTS FOREWORD DEDICATION ADMINISTRATION FACULTY SENIORS UNDERCLASSMAN ACTIVITIES SPECIAL EVENTS SPORTS PATRONS rf{ihlnor. s Church ‘To. kNOX COVERED BRIDGE - - _ (puniffelfiafu . . . tfcrmiuttnrn, P if;irl f t ufi PART OF PENNSYLVANIA If you have known a grey stone house Spring-bright with daffodils, Or watched pink apple blossoms tint Low Pennsylvania hills. If you have loved a covered bridge Or walked a starlit lane, When hylas made the evening shrill With monotoned refrain. If vou have gathered violets And learned where laurel grows. Thrilled to the scent of rainwashed pine Or hemlocks sprayed with snows, If you have watched a partridge whirr Across a harvest field. Or robbed a grey November fence Of bittersweet’s bright yield. If vou have loved the Indian names Of winding creek and river. You’re part of Pennsylvania Forever and forever. — Alice M. Swaim 4 DEDICATION The nineteen hundred and sixty-six yeartxrok staff dedicates this edition of the Ea- gle to our state of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania is a land of great beauty, inhabited by many different peoples. Woodlands of stately oak, maple, pine, and hemlock cover more than half the state. Productive farms lie in the fertile Cumberland, Delaware, and Lehigh valleys. Orchards, tearing many different kinds of fruits, cover a vast area of Adams County. Pennsylvania is known for a variety of peoples including the colorful Pennsylvania Dutch, who have contributed some of America s finest folk art; the Amish, who have made their section of our state one of the country s richest farming areas; and the Quakers, noted for their plain customs. Pennsylvania is also known for the dramatic role it has played in American histo- ry. On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia, followed by the ratification of the Constitution in 178i. On July 1, 2, and 3 the turning'point of the Civil W'ar was fought at the Battle of Gettysburg, and in 1859 Colonel Edwin Drake drilled the nation's first oil well at Titusville. Perhaps the greatest role Pennsylvania has played in American history was the naming of ork as our nation's first capital. Last, but not least, Pennsylvania is noted for its famous people. Among these are James Buchanan, who preceded Lincoln as President; frontiersman Daniel Boone; Conrad Weiser, an Indian agent; George G. Meade, who commanded the Northern forces at Gettysburg; Rotert Fulton, inventor of the steamboat; Stephen Foster, famous composer; and George C. Marshall, Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army during World War II. These are just a few of the famous people bom in Pennsylvania. It is then with great pride that we, the memters of the staff, dedicate the 1966 Eagle Yearteok to the Keystone state of Pennsylvania, the land of virtue, liberty, and independence. 5 PENNSYLVANIA'S LOST VALLEY — Alice Mackenzie Swain It lies beyond the hunter’s farthest trail. This hidden valley, still unknown to man, A grassy hollow, rich in deer and quails A sanctuary since time first liegan For shy, furred things, for birds and honey liees. When 1 was but a lad. I wandered there Through aisles of virgin oak and hem- lock trees. Hard on the trail of a gigantic liear. 6 7 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY The faculty members of Bermudian Springs High School duly deserve the respect and admiration which is paid to them by the entire student body. They use their time, energy, and patience for Bermudian Springs to make an ideal place in which to grow, work, and play. They give to each student an understanding of his responsibility in the adult world of which he will one day 1 a part, and they prepare the student for this life by giving to him the benefits of their knowledge and experiences. Each member of the faculty is always ready to advise, encour- age, and support the various extracurricular activities, such as junior and senior plays, the basketball, baseball, football, and track teams, and the Homecoming floats and dances. The students of Bermudian Springs High School are extremely fortunate to have the expert guidance of so many willing advisors. M; MEMBERS OF SCHOOL BOARD PLAN YEAR Paul B. Lerew Richard E. And for training that’s unending. As we meet the world so wide. And as we go through life’s long journey. To an end we can not see. We’ll not forget our Alma Mater, In a land so rich and free. Donna Kaye Roemer SENIORS COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA GOVERNORS OFFICE HARRISBURG To the 1966 Graduates of Bermudian Springs High School: Wannest congratulations to all of you upon the completion of your high school education. As you leave school and find employment, or go on to higher education, the temptation will be strong to put all of your time and talent toward your own career, your own family, your own livelihood. It is my sincere hope that you will not succumb to that temptation. I hope that humanity and your nation can have part of you. Your talents, and your commitment to social, political and humanitarian causes, are badly needed by the world into which you graduate. Because you are educated, you have lost forever the right to stand silently as a faceless member of the crowd. America needs you to help build the future, a world better than man has ever known. The world will not be without dangers, disappointments or frustrations. But it will be a world in which poverty and want are finally conquered. It will be a world in which each man's talents are given a fair trial and an honest use. It will be a world in which human brotherhood will be not merely a slogan, but a truth. Each one of you can help bring these things to reality. May your graduation from high school be the gateway to a satisfying and useful life — a life which will bring honor to you, your family, community, and nation. With every good wish. The staff feels that it is a very appropriate statement for this section of the Eagle. We, the underclassmen of the 1965-66 school year, should con- sider ourselves as being quite fortunate. It has been our privilege to experience the richness of school life for a few years. Now our school days are fast growing to a close. The faculty has sincerely and earnestly guided us in the building of both our minds and our bodies. Knowledge has been presented to us, and those who were wisest grasped as much as possible. In a few years we will make our departure. So Bermudian we need never bid good-bye; it is much more fitting to say so long. JUNIORS President - Jim Lerew V. ACTIVITIES Throughout the year there are many activities that offer to the student an opportunity to participate in functions outside of the classroom. There are a variety of clubs offered to the student, giving him a chance to develop his interests. Other enjoyable activities that the student may attend or take part in are: the junior and senior plays, the class and organization dances, and the junior-senior prom. These activities that are so much a part of us today will be the majestic memories of tomorrow. ' The play revolved around the death of the great scientist, Rodney Cloud. He sup- posedly died from natural causes, however; his widow, Marcia Cloud, suspected that he had lieen poisoned. She had his body taken to an old rooming house outside of the capital so that she could arrange a post-mortem. Hannah. Rodney’s first wife, with the aid of George Mollison followed Marcia to the old mansion, hoping to recover Rodney’s laxly. The old mansion was operated by Loretta Page and her murderously demented sister, Teresa Drake. Enmeshed in the web of sinister intrigue were two government workers, Betsy For- rester and Carla Barlow. Various strangers came to the rooming house including Carla’s lxjy friend Horace, a fussy little psychiatrist, his jealous wife, and a hand- some young man) and tjuickly infiltrated the rooms. The handsome young man turned out to be Bill Henderson, an FBI agent. He trapped the conniving Hannah and her friend. The play ended happily with all the the characters being accounted for. even Rodney. The play was directed bv Mr. Llovd Wagener, who was assisted by two student directors. Judy Sease anti Sarah Fair. The play was an astounding success and a credit to the junior class. • “At last, my Look Henderson, Ia;t me testify for the gov- ernment. ’ “Tell me the truth or I'll choke you. The student body should be very proud of our fine young men and women repre- senting Bermudian Springs in the various kinds of sports. Besides being an outstanding outlet for excess energy, sports offer a lot in the field of knowledge. A vast amount of work goes into a sport. The teams practice week after week until they have perfected their methods of playing. The coaches work equally hard by pushing their teams to the top, while teaching to the players the most important funde- mental in sports, and that is to remember that it is not whether you win or lose, it is how you play the game. Brinkerhoff TO LEAVE THIS HERITAGE — Alice Mackenzie Swaim Two hundred years ago, this valley knew Only the great trails of the Indians, Until a church arose, and a town grew. Settled at first by Presbyterians. They left their imprint on the fertile land. These pioneers, so brave, so fiercely free. Whose glowing visions of the future spanned Far more than that first troubled century. In God they trusted, those staunch pioneers, Who dared the wilderness, armed with a dream. That their sons built and nurtured though the years Into this heritage of high esteem. Though times may change, and strange new ways prevail. This land breeds men who never learned to fail. SENIOR AWARDS JUNIOR PLAY Tune in on Terror” was The Comedy Mystery presented by Junior Class on May 20th and 21st. One bleak, snowy evening, two screen fiend twins are left alone to spend an evening in an old abandoned hospital. This initiation stunt erupts in an unbelievable nightmare. No sooner had they arrived than wierd hap- penings begin. Mysterious bangs and ar- riving guests add to their dilemma. These new arrivals, part of a wedding party, are soon joined by the prospective bride- groom and the nervous Rev. Moss. The mysterious cat girl, snake boy, mad doc- tor's lab assistant and his pistol packing granny make for a night of horror and surpirse. IV SENIOR PLAY The Death and Life of Larry Benson” was a highly dramatic play presented by the Senior class on April 14th and 16th. Few dra- mas have been presented at Ber- mudian Springs and the senior class certainly appreciated the highly successful turn outt. The cast was as follows: Mrs. Benson — Sally Worley, Mr. Benson — Tom Harbold, Jessie Benson — Apryl Tribby, Susan — Delores Wolf, Mary Ellen — Dorothy Kline, Mrs. Clarke — Christine Koelker, Melvin — Barry Bover, Mrs. Potter — Martha Eshleman, Mr. Potter — Roger Smith. Bud — Steve Eisenhart, Grace — Sarah Fair. Mrs. Fitch — Yvonne Jacobs. The Bermudian Springs High School choruses and the Bermudian High Continentals, under the direc- tion of Mrs. Merle Millhimes and Gary Crum, presented So This Is Paris,” a musical comedy in two acts, in the high school auditorium. The play concerned the fate of six American girls who fall in love with Paris and its dashing male citizens, only to meet with the strong disap- proval of their parents. Jeannette Bosserman and Benjamin Stoner filled the roles of the leading couple, while a cast of some 35 mem- bers, including a chorus line under the direction of choreographer Cindy Harris, provided ample support. The physical activity and good times shared by the participants are an important part of their education. Al- though their win-loss record leaves much to be desired, they are on their way to success. Confucious say: Today’s practice makes for tomorrow's records. THE CLASS OF 1966
