■ 1963 EAGLE PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF THE BERMUDIAN SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL YORK SPRINGS, PENNSYLVANIA Editor: CYNTHIA ZEPP Advisor. MR. JOHN A. REBERT Here stand the doors of knowledge; all that is needed to open them is the will to learn. THIS IS Typical hall jam Studying, Dick? Laugh, kids. Mr. Billett just told a joke! Band of brilliant scholars Yea, team, fight! A phase of social life at Bermudian I could have danced all night. STUDENT COUNCIL CAMPAIGN Good chase! 11 AND FOREWORD Barbara Miller Literary Editor i Within these walls of brick and mortar lies the foundation of our edu- cation. Education is not a book that can be bought at the bookshop, but a learning process — a way of life. In this yearbook, we are attempting to depict the moods in the life of the high school student—chatter about the physics test, the senior play, the prom, or Saturday's date echoes through the halls. By glancing through these pages, you will find your teachers, classmates, friends, and your school activities. We are leaving behind our fellow students and stepping into the future. We hope that we will have the fortitude and courage to overcome those obstacles on our vocational and educational paths. 13 DEDICATION We, the Class of 1963, dedicate this second edition of the Eagle to John R. Korver, one who has been of great help as a librarian, teacher, and friend. Those who have been in any of his classes deeply respect and admire him for his practice, discipline, and his concern for the welfare of all. He has always been willing to help a pupil whether in need of reference ma- terials or just advice. He has been helpful, not only as an advisor to clubs and Student Council, but he has also devoted much time to the production of class plays. His personal attention to each individual has been an invaluable aid to our education, and we proudly salute him. ADMINISTRATION SCHOOL BOARD EAST BERLIN BOROUGH: Paul J. Lerew, Roy B Boyer. Boyer, Howard W. Albright As of September 6, 1962, the State Council of Education approved the action of the Court of Common Pleas of Adams County in abolishing the Coneuago Independent School District and approved the change in boundary lines of the Reading Township School District to include the territory of the former Coneuago Independent School District. Consequently, the five members listed above for the Concwago Independent School District are no longer serving as members of our school board. We thank them for their past efforts in assisting in the provision of a better educational program. To the Class of 1963 . . . On behalf of the Board of Directors and myself, I wish to congratulate each and every one of you. Never before in history has it been so very important to have a high school education as it is today. The more education you have the greater the opportunities and challenges will be as you go through this ever-changing world of ours. Remember and cherish your graduation day all your life. For on this day you will feel as you have never felt before. You have succeeded in something of great importance which you have worked so long and hard to achieve. The best to all of you now, and in the many years to come. Paul J. Lerew, President 18 PRINCIPALS TO THE CLASS OF 1963 Congratulations to each one of you upon this significant achievement in your educational experience. When you entered the seventh grade in 1957 there were 96 students in your class; less than one-half of those students art- in the graduating class. You are to be commended for your persistence in pursuing your goal of high school graduation. Your parents, teachers and the general public have provided you with the best educational facilities and curriculum which have been offered to the students of this area in many years. We sincerely hope that all of you will use these benefits to achieve success in your selected vocations and professions and to reflect credit upon your families and our school. Amos D. Meyers, B.S., ST B., M Ed. Supervising Principal TO THE CLASS OF 1963 The growth of man progresses as time progresses, and no man grows without direc- tion. Our growth does not cease with a termination of public education nor does it cease with the termination of formal education. Many times the direction we take in the growth of life depends upon the education and guidance we receive in our formative years of public education. We of the faculty and admin- istration wish you the fullest growth in life and feel proud to have been part of your direc- tion in your future. Alfred R. Billett, B.S.. M.Ed. In order to vote, the students were asked to place coins in the containers which were placed below the pictures of the girls. After one week of cam- paigning, the coins were counted; Susan Bricker, a pretty, blue-eyed, brunette was chosen. She has been a member of the National Honor Society for the past two years. Susan has also been a May Court attendant. This year she is presi- dent of the Press Club and the historian of her graduating class. Her hobbies include: ice skating, swimming, read- ing, and dancing. Susan’s ambition is to become an ele- mentary teacher, and she has already been accepted at Shippensburg State College. We hope that the future Miss Year- book will be able to carry her title as admirably as Susan. 63 1963 EAGLE STAFF Richard Wolf Art Editor Lucille Prosser Business Manager Ronald Hoover Photography Editor Barbara Hull Assistant Ltterary Editor William Shook Assistant Art Editor Deadlines . . . discouragement . . . headaches . . . tears . . . SATISFACTION Yes, all of these are part of the huge task of producing a yearbook! The book is always prepared with the most critical viewer in mind, and each edition is planned as an improvement over all those which have gone before The 1963 Eagle staff worked diligently and long in order to achieve the goal of providing a memory book for the student body and a public-relations medium for the community. Even though those pictured here looked upon some of their tasks as being insurmountable, in the final analysis all agreed that their labors were not in vain; we hope that you agree. JOHN A. REBERT —Advisor Sarah Moore Barbara Miller Assistant Editor Literary Editor We, the members of the 1963 Eagle staff, wish to express our sincere ap- preciation and thanks for all the time and patience Mr. John Robert has put into this yearbook as our advisor. Some of the aims and objectives of the Council are: to schedule class and club activities, to promote cooperation between students and faculty, and to seek solutions to problems in school citizenship. This year's projects included the purchase of science-fair medals and the establishment of a suggestion box for the school. PRESIDENT Louy Kuntz SENIOR BAND 1st row: C. Shook, K. Cashman, L. So it was as another football season began for an inexperienced, but stubborn team from B.S.H.S. Two weeks before school commenced for another nine months, approximately 38 lads reported for practice. Led by the capable ability of Mr. Becker for those two weeks, and throughout the entire season, the boys at last molded into a workable unit. Although spotting a 1-5-2 record, when they put their minds to it any team was in for a fight. Undoubtedly, their best showing was not a win but a 24 to 7 loss to the Cadets of Scotland. During the entire second half, the Eagles held the opposition scoreless while fobbing 7 points and making an impressive defensive showing. Four Seniors will be lost through graduation; prospects of success loom in the future for the Bermudian Footballers. SENIORS ACTION Brickcr goes for yardage around end. Shank fights off his opponent. The Eagles with no returning Iettermen available will have their work cut out for them this winter. Prospects look good, however, with eight Juniors entering the field including last year's Junior Varsity Champions. Two Seniors will see action during the campaign along with these Juniors. By their first league contest the team should be ready to give any varsity' club a run for their money. We have confidence that Mr. Gruver will guide this young in- experienced team far in the standings as he did last year when B.S.H.S. copped the Adams County Championship. Our little acorns, the Jr. High Squad, will someday be the big trees or the varsity stars of tomorrow. Coached by Mr. Morrison and Mr. Crum these boys arc learning the fundamentals of how basketball is played. During these first years, lasting habits are formed, good and bad. Mr. Crum and Mr. Morrison have the task of making their habits in basketball good. We hope you will support these future stars as well as you support your varsity and J.V. On your mark . . . get set . . . BANG!!!” As legs churned and cinders flew, so began another track season at Bermudian. With several returning lettermen gathered into the fold. Coach Eby had bright hopes for a successful season. Numerous school records were shattered, and a few tied. The most consistent performances were turned in by the members of the mile-relay team. They established several new track records while participating in meets at other schools. Prospects for the 1963 season are good, with some returning lettermen and several newcomers to the sport. However, with the loss of Mr. Eby as a teacher, we will no longer have his services as track coach. He has done much to get track and field where it is today, and we hope that he is successful in his new position. 94 TRACK STARS FROM THE CLASS OF 1962 Jeffrey Eisenhart Craig Hoke Tom Wolf Lee Miller Robert Rohrbaugh 95 96 SENIORS OF THE 1962 BASEBALL TEAM Charles Gcmbc Kenneth Group Craig Hoke Tom Wolf It's a hot liner to the shortstop — he backhands it, spins, and throws all in the same instant. The All-American game of baseball arrived again! Bermudian, as many other schools in this area, was vying for the Championship of Adams County. During the 62 season, the Eagles had a very successful campaign, losing only two games one of these being a non-league encounter. We are proud to say that the Champions of Adams County during the 1961-62 schedule were our own Bermudian Eagles.
