Into virgin farm soil—fertile land, white with snow, Here he has built with brick and mortar, hammer and nail—from wood, stone, glass, and concrete blocks. A sturdy, lasting tribute to his knowledge and skill--a tribute not only to the builder but also to those who dreamed of and believed in its fulfillment even before it was begun. Completed; Is man's work done? No, his job is barely begun. From these halls and class- rooms must come youths educated not only to face life from an intellectual standpoint but also possessing the moral courage to face its problems and perplexities. FOREWORD Block upon block, brick upon brick--just as we construct a build- ing on a foundation of concrete, so lives are built on the firm found- ation of education. From piles of materials of seemingly little value, the skillful builder erects a thing of beauty and worth--A contribution to mankind. Each member of our society has a sim- ilar responsibility--the responsibility of molding the lives of those who follow us. Our community has met the challenge of a new high school and has fulfilled its responsibility. May we in later life have the fortitude to face and overcome ob- stacles such as those our community had to overcome to give us the educational opportunities which we enjoy. May we unite to build for ourselves and for our posterity a better community, a better nation, and a better world. TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS SPONSORS DEDICATION We dedicate this the first edition of the Eagle to one who has done so much to make the Bermudian Springs School System a re- ality. From its formation in July, 1957, he has helped join the York Springs and East Berlin school districts into a unified, close- ly knit organization. He has been instrumental in forming a school district which can offer, as never before, the educational oppor- tunities its youths need and deserve. We the students look upon him not only as an able and efficient administrator but also as one who commands our deepest respect and admiration. To Amos D. Meyers, Supervising Principal, we dedicate the 1962 Eagle with gratitude and appreciation for his efforts toward creating a higher level of educational opportunity for our school and our community. SCHOOL BOARD FIRST ROW: H. Hoffman, R. Tyson, Secretary, A. Townsend, President, R. Riggs, Treasurer, G Anderson, K. Hankey, R. Smith. SECOND ROW: L. Keefer, J. Keiser, L. Spahr, R. Hoffman, R. Koons. D. Roemer, P. Lehman. THIRD ROW: J. Zepp, G. Ebersole, H. Mummert, Vice President, L. Boyer, A. Pentz, R. Boyer, C. Spangler, M. Starner. To our graduates.......................... It has been your lot to grow up in times of uncertainty and confusion. As never before, bitterly divergent political and economic doctrines struggle to prevail. Very soon each of you will share the awesome responsibility of defending civilization against those who would retard it. But there are great new opportunities. Yours will be the age of space travel, nuclear energy, electronic computers, and devices beyond imagination. In the turbulence there is promise; in every challenge a reward. The cynic has called commencement a time of trite platitudes and dull bromides. This is not so. Remember and cherish this graduation day foras long as you live- let it inspire you to high attainment as you take your place in society. To our graduates of 1962, most sincere congratulations! Albert S. Townsend, President 14 To The CLASS of 1962 : Congratulations to each of you upon the measure of achievement which has qualified you for a high school diploma! Recently I saw a title which attracted my attention-- Rungs Are Not For Resting . This suggests that some students look for- ward to high school graduation as the end of their program of education--it is a rung for resting for those who are tired of learning. There are many who eagerly seek to climb as high as their abilities and resources willpermit. For these climbers, high school graduation is not a rung for resting but a significant step in an exciting adventure. It is my hope that your high school grad- uation will be a rung in your ladder of suc- cess. Amos D. Meyers, B.S., S.T.B.,M.ED. Supervising Principal Our world is made up of individuals and groups. You were born as an individual and immediately became a member of a group called a class . The Class of ’62 is com- posed of individuals that will now leave a group to find their way in a complex society of individuals and groups. The faculty and I are proud to be a part of your development that will influence you in choosing the group or groups who will help you create a life of which you can be proud. Somebody took my boy! I don't care who you are! Cheese . . . Try and strike me out! Well! Now! In there? Survival of the fittest! 67 o n MISS YEARBOOK She walks in beauty like the night. Six very pretty senior girls were introduced in an all-school assembly one morning. They were contestants in a Miss Yearbook contest sponsored by the staff of the Eagle. After much serious deliberation and meditation on the pulchritude of the con- testants, Miss Yearbook-1962 was elected by a vote of the student body. Roxie Thomas, a pretty, blue-eyed, brunette was selected. Roxie, who has been class secretary since her sophomore year, is an old hand at this sort of thing since she has been a May Court attendant every year since seventh grade. Her ambition is to become a beautician and her hobbies include knitting and collecting jewelry. During her senior year she has been secretary of the History Club. We like to think that Miss Yearbook exemplifies both the Eagle and our school: youthful, vivacious, and good looking. We hope that 1962 Eagle is as friendly and personable as is Miss Yearbook-1962. Student Council will now come to order. Student council, the school’s student government organization, is made up of class officers and elected representatives. The functions of the council are to schedule class and club activities, seek sol- utions to problems in school citizenship, and represent the interests of the student body to the administration. All activities must be approved by the principal be- fore they can be advertised. Atypical student council meeting might include decisions to schedule the senior play and a Pep Club pretzel sale, allow the juniors to sell candles, or permit the sophomores to sell name pins. One of the council’s major projects was the revising of the student council constitution. Other activities ranged from planning a school store to instituting a suggestion box and purchasing Christmas tree lights. V SENIORS IN BAND FIRST ROW: M. Hull, B. Kimmel, J. Drake, M. Hikes, M. Eshle- man, D. Fair, R. Howe. L. Miller T. Wolf BASEBALL C. Gembe E N I O R S K. Group C. Hoke T. Wolf SPORTS The keynote of the football season was experience. Although the Eagles sported a 0-6-1 season record, several varsity members received recognition for outstanding play. Tom Hardy, a6-5, 210 pound senior was given honorable mention by the Associated Press poll of District 3 for his play at tackle. Two other seniors, Craig Hoke and Charlie Gembe, were named to the Adams County Top Eleven Players, a team chosen by the coaches of Adams County. In basketball, after posting a 1-3 exhibition record, the Eagles, under head coach Glenn Gruver, started the 61-62 Adams-Franklin season with a 57-37 win over St. Thomas. Even in this game it was apparent that we had a winning combination with Craig Hoke, Tom Hardy, and Charlie Gembe all hitting in double figures. The high-flying Eagles went on to three straight victories before losing to Greencastle. A win over James Buchanan and a loss to Scotland tied B.S.H.S. with Littlestown for the division lead. Then came three more victories before a heart-breaking loss to New Oxford, 50-46. (Incidentally, this was the only loss to an Adams County team.) We trounced Fannet-Metal 67-52 to wrap up the Adams County diadem and in the final regular season contest whipped Littlestown 50-33. In the Adams-Franklin playoffs on the neutral Scotland floor, the Eagles went down to defeat at the hands of Greencastle's Blue Devils, 82-69. Our overall record of 13-10 and league mark of 12-6 would have assured us a berth in the District 3 Class C playoffs, but a stipulation in PIAA rules that competing teams must have at least five teams in their division, disqualified us. Three B.S.H.S. varsity members placed in the Top Ten Adams County scorers--Hardy, Hoke, and Gembe. Hoke and Hardy were also named to the ten-man Adams-Franklin All Star Team (a repeat performance for Craig Hoke.) Craig was also given honorable mention in District 3, All- State Basketball Poll. The Junior Varsity, coached by Mr. Reeder, posted a 9-8 record in copping the reserve championship. The 1961 season of track participation brought Bermudian its first victory in such competition. This first win over Boiling Springs, as well as a close victory over Greencastle, gave the team a 2 won 3 lost record in dual competition. Kenton Taylor provided the individual high point standing by placing third in the District 3, 440-yard dash at Lancaster. In addition to Taylor, Bill Inskip, Butch Krall, Steve Chronister, John Eshleman, Lee Miller, Laverne Wolf, and Jeff Eisenhart bore the brunt of the scoring. A fine group of youngsters of the '62 team shows promise of filling the shoes of those who left the '61 team due to graduation. Bermudian is hopeful to move from Adams County Runners-Up in baseball to the championship. With five seniors in the lineup as starters, the chances look very fine for a successful season. 105 Parties May Be Arranged By Calling York Springs 528-4712 or Contacting E.
