.V - ' 4 .  w-f fl?J a9rts history (fiffljfcâV t re fs  Uf By actions done now and in ther owl, we may fnfluence the future, r or quite some time East Berlin and York Springs have been working toward complete consolidation in the form of a new school. In the next few years, all of us will see this goal attained. It will be attained through steady pro- gress and harmony, two characteristics which are apparent now and will be, we believe, in the future. PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF Bermudian Springs High York Springs And East Berlin, Pennsylvania TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN ACTIVITIES SPORTS MISCELLANEOUS PATRONS Dedication It is with deep appreciation that we dedicate this book to Mr. Hebert. We realize that without his advice and help, making our yearbook would have been difficult at best, and impossible at worst. His skill in uniting the efforts of the staffs of the two schools was admirable. It was certainly not an easy task. Most of the students at both East Berlin and York Springs have become acquainted with Mr. Rebert in his field of guidance counseling. We appreciate his ability in this area. The personal attention which we received from him was an invaluable aid to our education and a helpful guide to our plans for the future. A smaller number of students have had the privilege of studying business education under Mr. Rebert. They recognize him as a truly gifted teacher. His classes are interesting and you learn in them, too! And so it is with pleasure that we dedicate the 1960 Reflector to Mr. Rebert, a helpful advisor, wise counselor, dedicated teacher and good friend. 8 Scncol Board First Row: Archie Pentz, Paul Lehman, Paul Lerew, Joel Zepp, Ralph Tyson, Raymond Leer, Paul Brough, Paul King, William Lott, Mary Baker, Preston Zerbe. Absent: Irwin Gross, Howard Albright, Richard Riggs, E. Ross Koons, George Anderson, Melvin Starner, Paul Blevins, Albert Townsend. It is with great pleasure that I congratulate the 1960 class of Bermudian Springs High School graduates. Your school district has worked long and hard to provide advanced educational facilities for the students in ou area, and we have now reached one of our final goals - that of providing physical facilities to expedite a more complete educational program. We expect to have the East Berlin addition ready for occupancy for the fall term of school, and the new high school building should be ready for use by mid-winter. I'm sure parents as well as students eagerly anticipate the move to new quarters. While the 1960 graduates have not had the pleasure of the new facilities, lam sure they are well qualified to take their places in community and professional circles. On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Bermudian Springs Joint School District I offer sincere best wishes for the future. 10 Ralph W. Tyson Joint Board President Principals Congratulations to the Class of 1960. You are to be commended for completing this important step in your educational experience. Some of you have achieved outstanding records in many areas of your high school program. You have worked hard to merit the honors which are deservedly yours. All of you have met requirements which are above the state-mandated minimum. A few of you have continued to work and study in the face of difficulties and discouragement. We hope that we have been some encouragement and help to all of you as you have worked for your diplomas. Those of you who are able to continue your edu- cation and prepare for a profession are encouraged to push on toward that goal. Some of you will have completed your formal education when you receive your diploma. Whatever the case may be, you should continue to improve yourselves mentally and spirit- ually by making use of the many opportunities for intormal learning which are available in our society. Best wishes to each of you, Amos D. Meyers Supervising Principal At no time in history has the world progressed to the point of its existence as we know it today. This can be reiterated daily, or annually, and will always be true as long as American students possess the willingness to meet the future as exemplified by the class of â60.â The faculty and I congratulate them on their progress at this point in their life span, and wish them the best as they venture into other fields of ââlife. My first prediction will concern Larry A1 wine. We usually see Larry at his desk diligently working on his homework. Larry wants to be a dairy farmer when he gets out of school, but my crystal ball pre- dicts that our Larry will soon be seen in the role of the greatest lover of all time. His name will far outshine those of Rock Hudson, Ty Power, and Tab Hunter. Peggy Boone is, in many ways, like Larry. She is quiet, conservative, and studious. Peggy expects to become a Registered Nurse after the necessary training. But my crystal ball sees Peggy as the saxophonist in a touring, all-girl band. Joseph Eshleman, although a little wild at times, is an all-around good student. Joe feels con- fident that he will become a doctor one day. But he is destined to become a big-time, boomerang manu- facturer. John Hunter has wanted to become a journalist ever since anyone can remember. Everyone agrees that John has the confidence and persuasiveness needed, but 1 see him at a foreign car race track. Yes, John is destined to become head pit man for Juan Fangio. Virginia Leedy has bright aspirations of being a beautician. Although she is already well versed in the methods, terms and equipment used by a beautician, I predict that she will become head li- brarian of the Library of Congress, where she will meet her end after becoming lost between the many rows of books. Donald Linebaugh wants to serve his country as a Marine. But I have a premonition that he will be a dictator of one of the many South American countries in the future. Vicky Little, like Peggy Boone, would like to become a Registered Nurse. Even though she does have a calm, comforting air about her, I predict she will rise to great heights as a daring, lady stock- car driver. Margaret Lobaugh is preparing to be an ef- ficient secretary. Although many agree she would make a good one, the crystal ball says she will be a well-known hostess on one of those late-late shows, which will continue to gain popularity. Arthur Loper has dreams of becoming a successful farmer. Sorry to salt your enthusiasm, Loper, but you are destined to be a ruthless, intrepid private eye with a crazy-talking sidekick. Faye Miller also wants to be a secretary, and though she could give Margaret a run for her money, the crystal ball pictures her as a great, white huntress just capturing that elusive prey... Tarzan. Gerald Mummert is very confident that he will excel in the music field. To hear him play his large repertoire of songs, one would think he would have no trouble as a musician. But his destiny lies in the training of pygmy, wild horses for the various fairs and circuses around the country. Janet Reid wants to become a secretary. Everyone agrees that she would make a great one. But the old crystal ball again differs from public opinion. Janet is really going to be a great, modern, impressionist painter. Glenn Sherman feels that he wants to be a para- trooper. Glenn is certainly outfitted for this line of work when it comesto courage and bravery; but he is destined to make his role as a basketball referee, which also takes courage and bravery at times. Phil Smith seems to have his heart set on becoming a lawyer, and anyone who has heard him speak would readily agree with this. Sorry to disap- point you, Phil, but your future lies in South Ameri- can, cattle ranching. Not too long from now youâll be known as Wild Phil of the Pampas.' John Stoner aspires to be a teacher. His present actions certainly seem to point to a career in the educational field. Now donât ask me how you're going to do it John, but you are destined to become the Russian Ambassador to the U. N. All I can say is, 'Where there's a will, there's a way, John. Jean Wolf feels she would do best in the secre- tarial field, and her grades and attitude surely point that way to such a career. In spite of this, I predict Jean will become a popular, jazz singer in one of New York's most expensive night clubs. Her popu- larity will rival that of Ella Fitzgerald. 43 JJord Springs The night before my graduation, I was lying in bed thinking about my classmates and wondering what their future would hold. I slowly drifted to sleep and dreamed what my classmates would be doing in the year 1970. The Bermudian Springs girls' basketball team won first place in the league. Who is the coach? Alice Anderson is, of course. Eugene Shelleman has the largest, retailing business in the state. His private secretary is Loretta Tanner; Marian Gantz is his special typist. The two, best beauticians in town, Carol Delp and Dawn Wolfe are giving each other strong competition. Dave Bosserman, Gary Prosser, and Bob Thomas own the biggest farms in Pennsylvania. Eugene Whisler, President of the York Springs Furniture Company, has just informed his private secretary, Gerry Myers, that he is promoting Russell Yeagy to second vice-president. I am sure Mr. Yeagyâs secretary, Phyllis Snyder, will be looking forward to a raise. Grace Trostle has just seen Shirley Davis, who is the best, elementary teacher at Bermudian Springs, to ask her why her oldest son was kept in after school. Bobâ Weigle pitched a no-hit game to clinch the World Series for the Los Angeles Dodgers this year. Fred Starner and his co-pilot, Leonard Lobaugh, are getting ready to test the newest jet. Nurse Karen Kennedy and her as- sistant, Joyce Forsythe, are standing by in case of an emergency. RuthHankey is married and very happy being afarmerâs wife. Paul Lenig, who is in charge of making the plans for the first trip to the moon, is keeping his secretaries, Carol Kuntz, Joyce Lehman and Darlene Lerew, very busy. Danny LaRue and Fred Ensor own the most newly equipped garage in town. Their speciality is replacing transmissions. Patty Reynolds and Carol Myers are working hard as secre- taries in the Marriage License Bureau of York Springs. Pat Musselman, with her social secretary, Lois Hoffman, has recently returned from Paris where she modeled the latest fashions from New York. Lynn Tanner is happily married while trying to raise as many children as her mother-in-law did. It is 1970 and my dream has come true. 44 Basf Berlin âJuniors F. Baker, P. Baker, S. Black, J. The band attended the Boiling Springs and Northern High School football games. In parades, the band marched at Dillsburg, York Springs, Harrisburg and twice in Hanover, the first time winning third prize. The groundbreaking of our new high school was honored by the presence of the band. In November the band was invited to attend the Gettysburg-Temple University foot- ball game at Gettysburg College. The biggest event of the year for the band members was receiving their new uniforms which arrived in early December. The spring months were spent preparing music for a spring musical and for the many summer engagements to follow. 59 Seniors-in-Band First Row: V. Little, J. Wolf, L. Hoffman, P. Mussleman, C. Gagles On Action 73 Bob Weigle Phil Smith November first found Coach Murphy with the task of rebuilding his varsity squad after the graduation of all but one of last yearâs starting five. Lacking exper- ience, but blessed with the basketball essential of hav- ing height, the Eagles had to practice long and hard to come up with a better than average team. Led by the playing experience of Bob Weigle and Phil Smith, the Eagles slovfly molded into a fine working unit. The four exhibition games indicated that they would do better in the league race than had formerly been anticipated. In their first league encounter they showed the poten- tial of the up-and-coming year by defeating Fannet- Metal. Although in the next game with Littlestown they were defeated, the game was forced into overtime and showed that the Eagles were improving, as Littles- town was predicted to win the league crown. By this time the starting unit was determined and set in Bob Weigle, Phil Smith, Tom Doherty, Tom Hardy, and Craig Hoke with Bill Inskip. Sal Hunter, Doc Eshleman, Kent Taylor, Ron Spangler, and Butch Krall always ready with added lift from the bench. By the end of the first half of league play our Eagles had compiled a fine 6 and 3 record. Two of the three losses were in overtime. At the end of this season the Eagles will lose three players due to graduation; Bob Weigle. Phil Smith and Sal Hunter. The â59-'60 edition of the Eagleswill long be remembered by all of the Bermudian fans who fol- lowed the team. This group of hard working, high-spirited boys began to improve from their very first practice and continued to improve until the last game of the season. This, of course, will not be the end of their struggle to play better ball and exhibit better sportsmanship; these young athletes of today will be our varsity tomorrow. Yes.win, lose, or draw these young men give their best and someday shall reign as champions. 78 Baseball First row--B. Miller, R. Myers, K. Rank. R. Spangler, C. Hoke, G. Williams, T. Roth. A c 80 Seniors Bob Thomas Bob Weigle The 1959 football season was not very successful, winning wise, for the Eagles. They won one and lost five; under the coaching of Mr. Kemper and assistants Dean Becker and Dale Guise. In the first game of the season, at Boiling Springs, Charlie Graybill was injured and was unable to play for the remainder of the season. On the field when the Eagles needed yardage, Bob Thomas was called upon to ram through opposing lines. When in need of long yardage Quarterback Tom Hardy took to the air with Bob Weigle or Butch Krall on the receiving end. To run plays through the line requires heavy blocking, this was usually supplied by Don Linebaugh, Dave Bosserman, Barry Shrade or Glenn Sherman. On defense when tacklers were desperately needed to stop the opponents,Glenn Sherman or Bob Weigle would rise to the situation. Although the team of'59 wasn't the best, the boys were always in there fighting and never failed to score against their opponents.
