This has made it necessary for you to deal with many matters which have been unique. In addition to this, much of your education has taken place during a time of stress produced in part by the reorganization of our school system and the pressures of the Space Age. You have conducted yourselves in a manner which reflects credit upon you and your school. May success and happiness be your reward for all your efforts in the years we have shared in school. AMOS D. MEYERS Supervising Principal Principals MESSAGE TO THE SENIORS The society in which we live today depends upon us as individuals and as groups for its improvements and per- petuation. You, the class of 1959, now more than ever before will be responsible for our way of life. The faculty and I feel proud, but humble, in helping you to help our society. We wish you success and happiness in your future endeavors. ALFRED R. BILLETT Principal 7 Shippensburg State Teachers Elementary Supervisor Lebanon Valley College English LIZZIE G. DAVIS, B. A. There it goes . . . the Vanguard of 1969, on its way to the moon. They said it couldn t BE DONE, but he has done it again! Yes, Professor Ernie Loper, the mad scientist, has gone from paper airplanes to rockets. As we look around the control room, we see Ralph Myers watching the count down of his latest architectural triumph, Jupiter XVIII, 4.3.2.1.0 ... Poof. .. Well, Ralph, back to the drawing boards. Leaving the control room, we are now out on the air strip. Seeing a group of handsome rocketeers, we push our way through the crowds. We see Ramona, Shelvy, and Linda, our own airline hostesses. Leaving the airfield we stumble upon our classmate, George Wolf, on his daily milk route. He then offers to take us back to town in his milk truck. Accepting the offer, we travel toward town. On the way we gaze upon the very prosperous one-acre plantation of Barney Zeigler and Larry Spahr. As we enter the metropolitan area of East Berlin, we notice that those two successful businessmen, Carl Myers and Bill Black, are late for work again. (I would imagine that their secretaries, Judy Baum and Flo Groupe, are still running the business.) Down the street we find the beauty salon of Madame Janet Inskip; and next door, we see “Chain Jacobs' barber shop. What's going on down there? It sounds as if “Chain’’ is accusing Janet of luring his business away from him. Standing on the comer, we see Bill Miller givingall the girls the eye. Same old “Tank. He tells us that he is now recruiting officer for the U. S. Army; he also informs us that there is a basketball game in the B.S.H.S. gymnasium this evening. After getting something to eat, we decide to take in the basketball game. Arriving a little late, we notice a light upstairs. On investigating, we find Janet Witter, the commercial teacher, and Wilma Wenschhof, the elementary teacher, getting some work prepared for their students. While chatting with them, we notice that it is getting late and we hurry to the gym. As we enter, we see that B.S.H.S. is trouncing their opponents behind the coaching of Chas. Chronister, a familiar face around the basketball court. As Ernie's paper airplane floats back to earth, we land in 1959. Well, back to the old grind. East Berlin 37 Class Prophecy It is the year 1970; the first interplanetary passenger space ship is about to be launched. Air Force Captain Paul Weigel gives the final signal for takeoff, and the 26 passenger space ship lifts majestically upward, powered by a combination of solar energy and atomic power, put together in the laboratory of Carl Hikes, chemical engineer-nuclear physicist. Flight engineer Harold Griffie tells the radioman, Roy Williams, to instruct pilot Jim Cash- man and co-pilot Jim Bosserman that they now have complete control of the ship. Once out of the earth's atmosphere, the huge craft pauses monetarily at a space station be- fore continuing on its journey. Here, mechanic Richard Stoner makes a final equipment inspection. Once again, the gigantic craft veers upward and onward to its destination-Mars. William C. Coulson, retired industrialist, who is now the head of the F.B.I. remarks to Rev. Robert E. Schlotzhauer, who is seated beside him, “Almost like taking our senior trip all over again, isn’t it?” Medical technologist, Linda Roth, is summoned to look after Mr. Coulson’s private secretary, Velma Brough, who appears to be plagued with space-sickness. Dorothy Lerew, the famous movie celebrity, is being attended by her personal beautician, Nancy Weigle. Donna Gembe, Miss Lerew’s agent, is talking to dress designer, Gayle Gulden, whose crea- tions are considered out of this world. Former New York Yankee ace-relief pitcher. George Williams, is discussing with Marlin Tate, quarterback of the Los Angeles Rams, the possibilities of forming professional sports activ- ities for the people taking up permanent residence in Mars. Mary McCauslin, space dietician, announces that the famous cherry pies which she baked are now ready to be served. Navigator Yolanda Golden takes time off from her work to consult health expert. Anna MaeStambaugh, about an ingrown toenaiL Educators, Esther Harbold and Carole Chronister, are talking over plans to establish schools and colleges in Mars and in other planets. George W eigle, building contractor, has just completed negotiations with the Universal Realty Company, headed by Nola Adams and Beverly Bupp, to build space communities in Mars. David McCartney, policeman, attentively watches Janet Hinkle, Miss Adams' private secre- tary, as she places the contract in the ship's vault. Pilot Jim Cashman gives the passengers instructions over the ship’s intercom system to fas- ten their safety belts - Mars, here we come! Juniors September 3, 1954 marked our entrance into seventh grade; on dial day, there were ninety-four, bright-eyed boys and girls filled with the anticipation of embarking on the journey of advanced education. During the year, we presented theSeventh-GradeSpectacular, which was sponsored by Mr. Eppley and Mrs. Fickes. When school opened in 1955, fifty-six of us entered the eighth grade. In October, the boys formed the Conservation Club, under the supervision of Mr. Eppley. The class consisted of forty-eight members when we began our ninth-grade work. On February 23, our class went on a field trip to Hershey, where we saw famous landmarks and the ice capades. Upon commencing tenth grade, we found that our class roll had decreased as only twenty-four students remained of the original ninety-four. The outstanding event of the year was the receipt of our class jackets. September 3, 1958, marked the beginning of an exciting year for us as Juniors--fifteen strongl The two major highlights of the year were the Junior-Senior Prom and the receiving of our class rings. Our eighth-grade history shows that Judy Ecker and Charles Smyser served as May Court attendants. In the ninth grade, Mr. Murphy’s birthday provided us with the opportunity to hold a party for him. Later in the year, we sponsored a student-body assembly, in which cartoon films were shown. As Sophomores, we got into the activity swing; our activities included: a Halloween party, a hay ride, and a hop with Wayne Trout, from the WSBA Radio Station, as Master of Ceremonies. Seniors The 1958 football season was a very succesful one for both the Varsity and Junior High teams under the head coaching of Pete Kemper and the assistant coach. Dean Becker. The Eagles lost their opening game to Li tiles town, but then with Senior quarter- beck, Charles Chronister, calling the signals, the Eagles went on to a fine six to one record. Whenever the extra yardage was needed. Senior fullback, Marty Tate was called to deliver the punch. When the long yardage was needed, Chronister would go to the air with either George Williams or Bob Welgle on the receiving end. To make room for the back field, there had to be a line up from. At center. Chain Jacobs would usually make a hole when the backs came running through. To run a power play, there had to be plenty of blocking up front; and it was usually supplied by the ever-ready Bill Black and Ike Williams — and the always capable Glenn Sherman and Butch Griffie. On defense, it was still another story. The Eagles allowed seven TD S, a fine average of TD per game. The last two games were •‘whitewash jobs over Boiling Springs and Delon e. The Eagles outscored the opposition by 149 to 43. To prove the great running attack of the Eagles. 16 of the 23 touchdowns came by thfe way of the ground. Leading the team in scoring was Senior quarter- back, Charles Chronister, with seven TD s, followed closely by Senior halfback, Ralph Myers, with 6TD s. Bermudian will be hurt badly by graduation with eight of the first eleven departing. The scores for the season were as flollows: Bermudian Springs 6 Littlestown 19 Bermudian Springs 13 York Suburban 6 Bermudian Springs 33 Susquehannock 6 Bermudian Springs 7 West York 6 Bermudian Springs 25 Big Springs 6 Bermudian Springs 40 Boiling Springs 0 Bermudian Springs 25 Delone 0 71 KNEELING: J. Chronister, R. Myers. On November 11th, a call went out from our new head coach, Robert Murphy, for all basket- ball-inclined, Senior High boys. The first few weeks were spent on converting football muscles back into basketball form. At this time, Mr. Murphy found ten boys who would fit into his plans for the coming year, seven of whom were seniors. Returning from last year’s starting team were three county All-Star performers, George Williams.Bob Weigle. and last year's league-lea ding scorer, “Chas.” Chronister. Moving up from last year’s Junior Varsity Championship team were: BillCoulson, “Cal Myers, “Chain Jacobs, Ralph Myers and 6’4” tall, Tom Doherty. The “Eagles” gave Bermudian fans many exciting nights; but, undoubtedly, die highlight came on February 6th on die “East Berlin” floor. The home five broke all standing scoring records in the Adams-F ranklin League by scoring one hundred two points at the expense of St. Thomas. During this game “Chas” Chronister scored a spectacular sixty-two points, setting a new league record and school record. The team showed a good display of balance, both offensively and defensively, it was not unusual to see four players scoring in double figures in one game. Mr. Murphy could also go to his “always ready and capable” bench if he needed that extra punch. Barney Zeigler, “Cup Smith, and “Bill Coulson were his top substitutes. Basketball fans will long remember the Bermudian Springs team of 1959. 72 Seniors 73 G I R L S FIRST ROW; K. May, E. Harbold, Y. Golden, J. Hinkle, P. Musselman. SECOND ROW: A. Anderson, J. Drake, S. The team held their practices at York Springs and played their home games at East Berlin. The “Eagles” sextet will lose three girls due to grad- uation. They include Esther Harbold, Yolanda Golden, and Janet Hinkle. We are expect- ing a fine season next year with many letter winners returning. 74 J R J R FIRST ROW: S. Miller, Manager; G. Miller, C. The varsity baseball team is entirely dependent upon the performance of its vet- erans, seven lettermen, six of whom are seniors. Coached by Mr. Kemper, the team is confronted with a rigid schedule and will be making a strong bid for the county title. The junior-high baseball team is part of the Tri-County League which consists of participating schools in York, Adams, and Cumberland Counties. It, too, will be making a strong challenge for top honors. The home games this year will be played on the York Springs diamonds. SCHEDULE March 26............... Soon you and your classmates will take different roads, and it may be years before some of you will meet again. School days do not last forever - and when they are past, memories are kept warm by the photo- graphs of friends of the classroom and campus. Your chums should have a “personality portrait’' of you, and so you will prize one of theirs in return. In a year or so you will be glad you took this means of keeping alive the memories of your school days. And the home folks will always cherish a portrait of the ‘‘turning point” in your life. This studio is the headquarters for special photographic work and the doors are open to students of the Bermudian Springs High School and their friends. Why not arrange to come to the studio now and have that photograph taken? s K SPECIAL STYLES AND RATES FOR STUDENTS THE ENSMINGER STUDIOS Second and Walnut Street, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Phone: 6-7968 CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 1959 Who will be the first Bermudian Springs graduate to fly to the moon? Who will be the first to live in a dream house in outer space? Who will be the first to become a millionaire? Never has a generation of high school graduates faced such fantastic posisbilities with so much assurance that it can happen to any one of them. Never has a generation of students seen so much progress nor learned so much about the world. The courage of youth is without limitations. The courage of many generations of youth has laid the foundation for your trip to the moon, your home in space, your financial fortune. KNOUSE FOODS extends to each of you best wishes for the goal of your choice. Mr. Ensminger 102 Gold 'n' Good MUSSELMANS Biglerville, Pa. Gardners, Pa. Inwood, W. Va.
