SPECIAL NINTH GRADE During the spring of 1954 the Holmes County Grand Jury requested that the school attendance law be en- forced uniformly throughout the county. Due to lack of building facilities we could not comply with this request until the beginning of the second se- mester of this year. Our board of edu- cation rented the abandoned Baptist Church building for this special ninth grade. Miss Boyd taught English I, Mr. Coulter a double period in Ger- man I, and Mr. S. Miller a period of general mathematics during the fore- noon. Mr. John Maxwell was trans- ferred from Pleasant Hall to Berlin Village, where he taught General Science and supervised study halls in the high school during the forenoon. Mr. John Maxwell In the afternoon Mr. Maxwell had charge of the special ninth grade, where he taught a course in Health Edu- cation and also supervised the study periods. The enrollment at first was twenty-six but as pupils reached the age of sixteen they withdrew and at the end of the term the enrollment was nine- teen. Mr. Maxwell as well as the other teachers contributed to these ninth graders. He was both skillful and tactful in meeting the special problems which arose in the administration of this ninth grade. It is hoped that some suitable arrangement can be completed to put this special ninth grade on a permanent basis, either by erecting an accep- table fire proof building or absorbing these special pupils in the regular school program.
