Shepherd -Grissom - Glenn. These men made world headlines in the early years of the 1960 ' s. Their ac- complishments advanced the technological knowledge of the world far beyond the imagination of early man. Their efforts required unusual self-sacrifice and determination and an enormous amount of cour- age. Historians relate that progress has been made through the pioneer efforts of individuals very si- milar to the astronautsmen in character and purpose with strong convictions and by men anxious to make the world a better place in which to live. In an era of our history, when at times it is dif- ficult for a person to feel that he counts for much as an individual, the accomplishments of the space- men can serve as a guiding light. They have shown, beyond anj ' doubt, that the success of a team effort depends to a great degree upon individual endeavor. Not everyone can contribute to the betterment of man and society in a manner similar to that of the astro- nauts. However, today ' s high school graduate is completing the first phase of formal education in a time of universal world crises. If we are to survive as a nation, we need individuals who can think clear- ly and logically, who have a deep sense of purpose, and who possess the ability to react to situations in a responsible manner. It is my hope that you - the graduates of the Class of 1962 - are prepared to face the challenges of the future and to accept your share of responsibility to see that our community, state, and nation are made better and stronger through your individual efforts. I liope tliat as each day passes, you will be able to analyze carefully your actions of that day and ar- rive at the conclusion that your efforts have help ed achieve this goal. On behalf of the faculty I extend our best wishes for success and happiness.
