SPARK OF LIFE January 28, 1987, saw the first annual Student Council Blood Drive held at BUS. This is the first time anything of this nature has been attempted as an in-school function. I'nder the direction and support of Mrs. Jerrie Dahl-Fitzger- ald, the Student Council laid the groundwork for the event, which turned out to be more successful than anyone ever dreamed. Super Valu donated all of the sandwich-making materials needed for the canteen. At 7:00 a.m. the morning of the drive Student Council members came to butter, cut, and wrap sand- wiches. Council members were also responsible for the most important part of the event — recruiting donors. The Madison based Red Cross team arrived at 10:50 to begin setting up. It was assisted by volunteers from the community who helped in set-up. registration, collection and serving food in the canteen area. The drive was held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and in this time ninety-one students and faculty members signed up and donated blood. By the end of the afternoon the Red Cross had collected 69 units of blood. This was 19 pints over the 50 which it had hoped to collect. We asked some students if they would donate again: Senior Dawn Domke said, This was my fifth time!” Senior Kari Branske stated, Yah, only if I get fed. Senior Shawn Pearson, who was unable to donate, said, I think more people would have given if it hadn't been on a game day. I would have. Student Council Treasurer Michelle Schry commented. It really made me feel a great deal of pride in the students here. Seeing them all pull together made all of the hard work worth- while. As a whole the project was a tremendous success. Hopefully future classes will make this worthwhile event a lasting tradition at BHS. Senior Mike Gunka waits for the chance to give blood. Even faculty members like teacher. Mr. Demick. got in on the blood drive. BLxxi Drive 29
