Tim Wallaca and Randy Mulder are both Main Street workers. What are you doing tonight' Working. This is a common response heard here at Berlin High School. Many students have after school and weekend jobs. The most common reason to work is that students have to get money from somewhere and most parents won t just give it. The money students earn from these jobs is used in many different ways. Some students just use their money to go out and have a good time. Other students stash every dime and penny away for their future education, or that car that they want so bad. Then they won't have to share with mom and dad anymore. Most underclassmen have a harder time getting jobs than upperclassmen because of lack of transportation, and in most cases not being old enough. But some of these underclassmen babysit for neighbors and friends, or do yard work and other small jobs. Some students are fortunate enough to have their job right at their own home as in farming. Seniors Andy Sobieski and Paul Brueggan work on the family farm with their parents. Other students even start their own business. An example of this is the many students at our school who have become interest- ed in the DJ business. They have started their own or bought someone elses. Besides working at home and self-started businesses, there are many different kinds of jobs held by other students at BUS. In the Berlin area some of the largest employers are the Green Tree Mall, Hardee's and the Main Street Restaurant. We talked to some of the students who work at the Main Street Restaurant and they for the most part seem to enjoy their jobs. Some of the positions held are short order cook, dishwash- er, bus person and waitress. The employees say that their boss considers them just one big family and this helps them to work better. A common job for a male in this area is to be a carryout boy or shelf Stocker at one of the local grocery stores such as Sentry, Greening or Super Valu. When speaking with some of the boys they seem to enjoy their jobs but say when working long hours, they really get tired from all the running around. They have to be polite and smile at the customers even if they don't have the energy anymore. Berlin students even travel outside the area to find jobs. For example, senior Michelle McGrath works at the A W restaurant in Wautoma, and junior Kerri Jones is employed by McDonald's of Ripon. When talking with students we found some of the most uncommon jobs. Some of them were cleaning WISS station by Kari Branske. furniture delivery by Jim Kasuboski. and office work and straightening at Nigbor Furs done by I.ana Pomplun. Most students seem to feel that having a job during high school has been an advantage for them. They feel they will be better prepared for what is ahead when they start career hunting after school. Shane Luethe and Peter Kasuboski are employed at Greenings. Shelly Bartol and Jenny LaBuda are employed at Greenings. Julie W'ucherer works at Ben Franklin. Troy Hitchcock and Lisa Leppin work at Jeff s Pizza. Working Studenti II This group was out and about on a Saturday night. Welcome to the night life with the students of BHS. There are many different personalities in our student body and so students participate in many different nighttime activities, because of our varying Wisconsin climate, people's activities change as the weather does. When students stay in the Berlin area at night they are limited for social activity. So many students make their own fun. Some students just hop in the Car and cruise town until they find some friends at Hardee s are just downtown. School dances and games are weekly activities and are regularly attended events for some students. Most feel this is a good time. Students who have their license often go outside the area for entertainment such as to Oshkosh shopping, out to eat, or to the movies. Going outside the area can be interesting even if it's just doing nothing or road tripping.” Becoming more common is home entertainment using the new VCR. Many students just invite friends over to watch a movie. They have small home parties with food and beverage. Whatever the type of entertainment enjoyed by students, ev- eryone loves to be with friends! DOUBLE Greg and Scott Drum We have some unique and interesting people roaming the halls at BUS and among this group of unique individuals is six sets of twins. Yes. right here at BUS. Some of these people you may see every day and not even realize that one or the other is a twin. The freshman class has its own Cristie and Catie Chase. Cristie and Catie enjoy doing pretty much the same things and spend much of their time together. Both participated in volleyball and basketball. Horses are also enjoyed by both. They are a lot alike but classmates consider Catie the more outgoing of the two. Sophomores Greg and Scott Drum are quite different from one another. For about 5 years Greg has been interested in dirt bikes. He is now thinking of racing one. On the other hand Scott is known for his interest in running. He has had the opportunity to run at state in both cross country and track. Amy and Ann Kurczek are twins who spend much of their time together. They especially enjoy being together in the sum- mer months. They don't look anything like each other but share Amy and Ann Kurczek Cristie and Catie Chase 14 Twins TAKE many of the same interests such as volleyball and softball. Jenny and John VanSistine are twins with distinctions. Jenny, a junior, likes to listen to music, go to concerts and, of course, go shopping. John, a sophomore, has interests that lie in hunting, the movies, and he also likes guns. Seniors Dan and Dave Gimenez never find any problems being twins because No one ever believes we are twins!” Dan, who thinks he is the better looking twin, is interested in spons. On the other hand Dave, the more intense of the two, is involved in mechanics. Two Extremely individual” twins are seniors Lisa and Lori Leppin. Firstborn Lisa is more outgoing and always feels like going for it.” Lori is a more reserved person and enjoys writing and reading poetry. Yes, we have six sets of twins at BUS but we also have twelve very different and unique people. But she dislikes the closed campus and hates the fact that Phy. Ed. is required. Her likes and hobbies include the sym- phony and musicals. She also likes to swim and go to movies. She was on the JV swim team and Pom Pon squad at Neenah. Ingrid also plays trumpet in band. Ingrid attended high school at Kassel, which has 13 grades. Her future plans after completing the 13 grades is to major in chemistry. We wish you luck and happiness in the future. 18 AFS Of Culture GERMAN CLUB: Row !; M. Zietlow Row 2; M. Braun, A. This is the first time anything of this nature has been attempted as an in-school function. I'nder the direction and support of Mrs. Jerrie Dahl-Fitzger- ald, the Student Council laid the groundwork for the event, which turned out to be more successful than anyone ever dreamed. Super Valu donated all of the sandwich-making materials needed for the canteen. At 7:00 a.m. the morning of the drive Student Council members came to butter, cut, and wrap sand- wiches. Council members were also responsible for the most important part of the event — recruiting donors. The Madison based Red Cross team arrived at 10:50 to begin setting up. It was assisted by volunteers from the community who helped in set-up. registration, collection and serving food in the canteen area. The drive was held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and in this time ninety-one students and faculty members signed up and donated blood. By the end of the afternoon the Red Cross had collected 69 units of blood. This was 19 pints over the 50 which it had hoped to collect. We asked some students if they would donate again: Senior Dawn Domke said, This was my fifth time!” Senior Kari Branske stated, Yah, only if I get fed. Senior Shawn Pearson, who was unable to donate, said, I think more people would have given if it hadn't been on a game day. I would have. Student Council Treasurer Michelle Schry commented. It really made me feel a great deal of pride in the students here. Seeing them all pull together made all of the hard work worth- while. As a whole the project was a tremendous success. Hopefully future classes will make this worthwhile event a lasting tradition at BHS. Senior Mike Gunka waits for the chance to give blood. Even faculty members like teacher. Mr. Demick. got in on the blood drive. BLxxi Drive 29 CLUBS WITH KEY CLUB: Row 1; K. Verheyen, K. Klinzinger. C. Wilde, K. Clark Row 2;J. Shipchak. T. Navin. L. Field. C. Hoffman, T. Schroeder, C. A project which it has in the process now is a hoop for the basketball players to run through at the beginning of the game. This year the Pep Club aslo announced the 1986 Homecoming Court. Mr. Menden popped the question on June 30, 1983, and so they got married this summer in Wisconsin Rapids at St. Law- rence Church. Mr. Menden says, that he is treated differently now that he is married. Students do not accuse him of going out with other faculty members anymore. Mrs. Menden says, that she is not treated in an other way by the students although students still call her sometimes Miss T. , but they are learning! Good luck to both of them with their marriage and private life and of course, in their sport activities and teaching at B.H.S. WATT’S This year. B.H.S. was privileged to add four new faces to its teaching staff. They include Mrs. Macadlo in Chemistry and Math. Mr. Demick in Social Studies, Mr. Schultz in Music and Mr. Moll in Art. Also after the retirement of Mr. Crow, we received a new guidance director by the name of Mr. Born. So far, all the new teachers are enjoying our school and teaching here. I enjoy it here quite well, the students are very acceptive of what I do, replied Mr. Demick. Tm happy here. I like it very much. The students are very cooperative, hard-work- ing and are interested in quality work, Mr. Schultz said. All the teachers are enjoying teaching in a small town. It's small enough to meet kids personally, Mrs. Macadlo says. Mr. Born replied, I enjoy this school because of the friendly atmo- sphere and people take time for each other; not like the big city where it is more stressful and crazy.” Mr. Moll feels that B U S. is a new challenge for him and he added. I m impressed with the wide range of talented students. Welcome to B.H.S. and the best of luck to all of you. NEW This year has brought a few changes to old faces . It has brought a new position for Mr. Hermanson in Guidance and Mr. Prellwitz in Social Studies. It has also brought the long awaited reunion of Miss Reif to our Spanish Department. Mr. Hermanson is one of the new guidance counselors this year. He is enjoying his new position very much. ”1 like the change of pace. It's nice to stay in class part of the day and one part in the Guidance Department. When asked if he misses teaching all his classes he replied. No, I'm teaching my favorite class. 20th Century Wars. Mr. Prellwitz had a change as well. Besides being the coach of the Boys Varsity Basketball and Girls Track, he is now a teacher in the Social Studies Department. This is Mr. Prellwitz's first year teaching and he likes it very much. I enjoy the challenge, he says. It was not that difficult for him to adjust to the new position but, It was difficult getting used to learning material. It's a challenge to keep the students involved, he concluded. After being away from B.H.S. for one year. Miss Reif returned as our Spanish teacher. In the meantime she was at L'W-Madison earning her Masters Degree. When asked why she decided to go back. Miss Reif said I wanted the extra literature knowledge and a raise in pay. It was not all fun and games in Madtown, as she recalls, it was hard to get back into studying and taking tests but I'm more organized since I have returned. The best of luck to these teachers in their new positions. Mrs. Macadlo. new in the Chemistry department Nice catch, Jbh. Chris Boening joins the Ghost busters as an honorary member. It's filled with 63 of the most unique characters I've ever seen. After entering the town I came upon a very pretty young lady carrying of all things a pig. She said her name was Moonbeam McSwine, though she looked an awful lot like senior Marcia Braun. The girl seemed quite nice but the smell was enough to knock you over! Next, I walked past a small creek where several guys were fishing. I decided to stop and chat with them. A tall, lean fellow resembling senior Shawn Pearson spoke. Ah's Abner Yokum. Everybody jest calls me Li'l Abner, though. An' these is my cronies, he added, nodding toward the other fishermen. 1 asked out of curiosity, Is it your day off from work today? All of them smiled at each other and then gave me a real funny look. Abner provided an answer, “No, we's don't work. All we's like doin' is sleepin' 'n fishin'. I then moved on. I hadn't gone far when a cheerful girl looking much like senior Tanya Lyne, carrying a pail of worms said, Howdy to me. Hi, I replied. Ah's Daisy Mae.” she said. Ah's bin chasin' that Abner boy (o' the longest time, but Ah ain't bin able to catch 'im yet. She was on her way and I moved on. As I got closer to the center of town. I heard more music. Some of the Dogpatchers were singing about some guy named Jubilation T. Compone. I found out later from the Justice of the Peace called Marryin' Sam, who really reminded me of senior Wayne Pick. Jubilation T. Cornpone was the greatest fightin' general and military strategist the confederacy ever knew. he told me. I was getting hungry so I went and had some lunch at the local restaurant. After my lunch I walked back into the street and observed people scurrying around all excited about something. I found out from Mayor Dawgmeat, who actually looked like senior Steve Sattler, that the U.S. government had selected Dog- patch as the most unnecessary place in the whole world and were going to build a nuclear test plant on it. The people of Dogpatch found a way to make their town useful and went on living day by day. Musical 4) A BRIGHT FLASH NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY: Row 1; B. Neumann, M Braun. T.Janiak. G. Hatch. K. The third floor of the building was originally used for the County Normal Teachers School. The second floor was used for the elementary and the first was a gym or recreation type room. The teachers school closed in the 1930's but the Lincoln building was continuing to be used for the elementary. In 1963 Clay I-amberton was built and the elementary was moved there leasing the Lincoln building empty. The high school needed more rooms and expanded into the Lincoln building. In 1985, the addition to the high school. North Wing, was started. In May 1986. the Lincoln building was shut down. One month later the building was torn down. The space is now being used for a teacher student parking lot. A final good-bve to the Lincoln building. Lincoln Building 17 GOV T IN MOTION STUDENT COUNCIL: Row 1; S. Alexander, K. Clark, K. Its main objective is to work with the Student Steering Committee. It hears complaints from the students and help to make the school a better place. One of the larger projects that the Student Council is handling is a student bloodmobile with the help of the Junior Womens Club. Other activities that the Student Council does includes selling pop and popcorn at basketball games and wrestling meets. This organization promotes school spirit by making signs, decorating the football field for homecoming, and cleaning the trophy cases. Student Council is an active representation of B.H.S. stu- dents at work for the better merit of our school. 48 Student Council Student Life 49 Prom 1986 was truly A Night To Remember. It began as a dream but became a reality through the help of many people. Our dream was built only of paper, paint, and wood, but it was all ours. Our journey to Camelot was a long one. We had our problems along the way like, falling paper, dripping paint, and a sagging sky. The day of prom was a mad rush; there were so many things to do. First we had to finish our dream and then it was off to who knows where. We ran from the flower shop to the hair dresser. There were final fittings of tuxedos and those dress shoes that never seem to fit. There were broken zippers, rips, and tears, but we made it through. Camelot came alive on Saturday. April 19.1986. The Enchant- ed Forest was filled with true royalty. Proud parents and students looked on as the reigning king and queen with their court entered our little world. The court jester and magician made the fantasy seem so real. We danced as the music of Excalibur filled our starry night. When the lights began to dim in this fantasy world, we were off to the bright lights and wild parties. We danced and ate pizza until the sun began to peek over the horizon. Prom 1986 slowly began to dim as dresses and tuxedos were shed. What started as only a dream had become our shining little place in the world and was truly A Night To Remember --- (( ommillee C( lx airmen bid+bid+bid+bid -o-o V - 2 o 5T -c o IT o- a- (Iecoraliny . . . This year a new program was set up that cut out activities which didn't promote school spirit. Class competition was limited to skits, floats, a noon hour activity, and the yelling contest. This was done in an effort to emphasize school spirit and unity. Our noon hour activity took place on Thursday. The activity was a balloon toss. The crowd cheered as four participants from each class tried their luck. Some were successful and the luck of others ended in wet clothing. Spirit day included crazy day, dress up day. and red and green day. Participation was minimal, but we had some really interest- ing people roaming the halls at BHS. We even had Father Pick and Scott ' Rambo Hansen fighting for the bodies and souls of BHS students. Thursday night's bonfire and pep rally sponsored by the Stu- dent Council were a big success. Unity touched all those present when our foreign exchange student Sergio De Castro lit the fire. Friday's pep rally was the highlight of the week. The excite- ment started when a group of Senior girls donned men's briefs and spelled out BERLIN INDIANS R 1. The Sport teams were announced and the crowd cheered them on. The skits highlighted the afternoon. The Freshmen took us on a journey to the Wizard of Steilmacher with hopes of success. The Sophomores kept us guessing with the Wheel of Football as Vanna bounced from one letter to the next. The Comet hit as the Juniors tried for success. The teachers then showed true sport with their rendition of wrestling. The Seniors took a successful first place with their special guests Pee Wee Hermanson and President Reagan. The gym silenced as we awaited the announce- ment of Mr. and Miss Berlin. Surprised faces were seen and hugs exchanged as Travis Jezwinski and Jeanne Johnson became Mr. and Miss Berlin for 1986. The football game was a great disappointment to all when we were sadly defeated by the Waupaca Comets. The Berlin March- ing Chiefs, however, dazzled the crowd with another spectacular performance. The Seniors ran away with the spirit award by taking first in the skit, float, and for the fourth consecutive year, the yelling con- test. Friday night we danced to the mi sic of Mayday and Saturday night BHS was once again rocked by the music of Excalibur. Homecoming 57 WE BUILD - J.V. CHEERLEADERS: S. Murkley, S. Nowicki, C. Competing at the state meet were Jeff Klick in the 100 meter. 200 meter, and the 400 meter relay; Doug Hunt in the shot put; Scott Drum in the mile; Brian Johnson in the 100 meter and the 400 meter relay; and Travis Jezwinski and Craig Verheyen in the 400 meter relay. We always had one good score and the rest were average. The Conference meet was held October 4th at Waupaca. The team placed fourth out of eight teams. They competed in the State meet at Wisconsin Rapids on October 11th. In this meet they placed seventh out of eight teams. Mark Edinger stated, At the beginning of the year we looked like championship material. But, as the season progressed we had problems sticking together to bring in scores good enough to beat the big teams. Team honors went to Mark Edinger, who was named most improved player and David Bloch who received the Pope-Winkel Leadership Award. Coach Polka commented, Going to Wisconsin Rapids for the State Tournament was the high point of our season. I knew from the beginning that our team members would be contenders in the Conference meet. We began very well and I was cautiously optimistic about future matches. The pressure of the importance of playing well in key matches brought our consistency down. They accomplished what it was set out for them to do. Congratulations to the varsity team that had a great season. They finished the season one game short of the state tournament. This was the first time any Berlin team has gone this far into the season. I’nder its new Coach Don Demick the varsity squad put together a 12-13 overall season. ... the girls played hard and I was proud of that.” Demick remarked after an improving season. We went against some tough competition and fared well. It was really good to see a lot of fresh- men out for the season. The Varsity squad finished at the top of the East Central Conference. Taking All-Conference honors were Brian Bending, Scott Wagner. Shannon Fox. and John Lueck. Overall the team finished with a 10-0 record in Conference competition. Scott Wagner, John I.ueck. Shane Luethe and Scott Nitzke all took first place honors in Regional competition with Shannon Fox and Brian Bending both receiving seconds. In Sectional competition Scott Wagner was the only team member to place and he received a third. John Lueck said, Omro had tough matches all the way through. Each weight class was even. Brian Bending commented, Omro was the most imponant match. Winning conference for me was an accomplishment. When talking to team members and asking about Coach Felsmann they seemed to feel that his coaching was strict but that he usu- ally tried to be fair. He coaches hard for a win and makes the squad train hard to get what they want. And that success has surely shown through this season. J.V. WRESTLING SQl’AD: Row 1; B. Hermanson, P. Murkley, L. Seventeen year old Serge is from Vitoria, Brazil which has a popula- tion of 400.000 people. A few differences between Berlin and Vitoria are the weather and the way people live (cus- toms). But I like to know (experience) different things, he added. Sergio enjoys jogging, swimming, and play- ing soccer. His other interests include talking with people, going to parties, driving, reading cartoons at night and above all playing the gui- tar. When asked what he likes about B.H.S. he replied. The extra-activities like trips, games, dances, the teachers and everyone here. ' Even though Serge is enjoying himself here, he does miss his family, friends, his girlfriend and the sun from back home. Although Sergio is a Senior at B.H.S.. he has already completed a semester of college at home. When he returns to his home in Vitoria. Serge intends to finish college for Business Ad- ministration. start to work and live in his city. 'T would like to say thank you for everything. I just love all of you, Serge concluded. Although we have learned, grown, and changed we did it successfully because we did these things together. By sharing both the happy and sad moments, we have grown closer. Each of us has passed many of life's challenging tests here at BUS. Although the future holds many more of these trials, we have made it this far. And with the strength of, love for and belief in each other, we will meet other challenges and succeed. So, when we recall all of those times , let's remember them with a smile. The sad ones cannot be changed, so let us take them for what they were. And let us learn and grow from them. The special times are those we shared with one another. Let us keep all the memories and let us Never Say Goodbye to what we have shared as the Class of 1987. B Gub 3.4 Senior Activities 113 As you look through this yearbook I hope it brings bac k memories for each and every one of you. The Mascoutin staff has tried to combine the interests and happenings of all the students at BUS into one image that can be enjoyed and treasured by all. Without the help of many hardworking and cooperative individuals this publication would not have been possible. First there is our Advisor Mrs. Macaulay. This was your First year on the job and I know that you've spent sleepless nights worrying about deadlines, pictures and stories. Seems like that is all part of yearbooking. Mr. Sponholtz, our photographer, has had to put up with inconvenient time schedules, people late for pictures and not cooperating, and countless retakes. Thanks for being so cooperative. Some individuals that played a small but important role in the publication were Mrs. Voeltner and members of the Red 'n' Green. They always helped with story ideas and a picture that was needed here or there. Thanks for letting us hassle you once in a while. Also thank you to Mrs. Coats who always seemed to have Mascoutin staff members running in and out of her room using her equipment. A special thank you and recognition go to the members of the Mascoutin staff. I know that I was a grump and impatient sometimes but let's just say that goes with the job. You guys were great even when I made you do crazy things like type when you didn't even know how or use that proper cropper that seemed to have no purpose at all. Everyone of you was needed and wanted even if sometimes it didn't seem that way or you weren't recognized for the effort you put into your work. Last but not least, a thank you to the student body and faculty of Berlin High School. Without you this yearbook would not be pos- sible because there would be no memories and you are the individuals who give energy to the Mascoutin of 1987. Thank you, Mascoutin Editor 116 r.tliror's Page nv
