It is the PEOPLE of BHS in Eighty-six who create a special little world everyday. This means more than just the seven hours we spend together each day when minds are thinking, hands are creating, and voices are singing. It takes more than mortar and bricks to build a school. It takes students studying, cheerleaders planning a dance, the juniors creating a prom, and football players fighting to win. BHS determines the friendships we make, the extra- curricular activities we participate in, the awards we win, and even the fun we have on weekends. The spirit of eighty-six, with a quality all of its own, makes this school a special one. It is an extension of every one of our charac- ters, our contribution to the little world we create from the first bell in August, to the last bell in May and beyond. Both have dedicated years to educate the youth of Berlin and both have had the opportunity to teach two genera- tions of students during their careers. Mr. John Wahlers, having 36 years at BHS will be remembered for his informative and entertaining math classes. Many of those who have worked with him on the yearbook staff will agree, he sure knows his stuff! Mr. Richard Crow, with 35 years teaching here will also be missed. Who's going to keep score? One of Mr. Crow's most admirable qualities is his ability to keep from flying off the handle after hearing comments about his fine feathered namesakes. The students of BHS would like to say to you โ€” Mr. Crow and Mr. Wahlers โ€” thank you. You're certainly something special in Eighty-six. In conference, Berlin ran away with the points con- stantly and finished, taking the East Central Champion- ship. After winning the regionals and continuing to Sectionals, the Indians Dave Rew (100 and 200 meters), Jeff Klick (100 meters), Dave Soper (Int. Hurdles), and the 400 meter relay team qualified for state competition. It was a windy day but that didn't affect the anxiety of actually being part of the state meet in Madison. The crowd of thousands raised the spirit and excitement as the races finished. Jeff Klick took a 4th in the 100 meter It was really neat Sen. Craig Verheyen dash and the 400 meter relay team consisting of Jeff Klick, Brian Johnson, Craig Ver- heyen, and Dave Rew, took a 1st Upon finishing the team knew they had done their best and in fact the time of 43.26 set a new state record! When asked what this day was really like for them, Jeff Klick recalled not concen- trating on the crowd during his race but close to the finish line I heard the crowd cheer- ing and someone calling my name . Other than that the guys couldn't really say what they felt except that it was really neat . Row 1: S. Petit, A. Simon, C. Jones, K. Dretske, C. Verheyen, E. This year the Key Club helped on a Special Day for Special People where handi- capped children got together to play games and have a day of fun. The club also raked lawns for the elderly and had a car wash to raise funds for local charities. The Student Council is a group of students chosen by the rest of their classmates. The Council is re- sponsible for such things as getting the bubbler fixed in the girls locker room, cleaning the trophy cases, and helping B-Club activities. Football '85 This season, although not pre- dicted to be conference contend- ers, the Indians overcame their lack of size with speed and deter- mination and proved to be on top of things. The early loss of Ted Kuklinski (Indians biggest player) could have been a setback howev- er the big win over Berlin's arch- rivals, Ripon, showed the team's strength. A Night In Paris. e landed in Paris in April โ€” on the W 27th, 1985. Our class of 1986, being a little extra ordinary chose an extraordinary theme. We spent a Night In Paris under the glamour of the city lights and the famous Eif- fel. Proud parents and curious spectators looked on as the ten court couples took part in the โ€œGrande March and our king and queen said a few words. โ€œHeaven by Bryan Adams sounded through the city and once again the hoops swayed and the trails flew as we danced the night away with the music of โ€œOrdinary People 61 hanging our mural painting our store fronts Bryan Adams singing Heaven goldfish in the fountains scraping paint painting 69 in the street wishing upon a penny in the fountain LaFleur Flower Shop Lonnie eating a goldfish 1 ust as prom had its moments, so did fr the day after ... j Pink satin and blue taffeta were now wrinkled messes, bow ties and cum- berbuns were missing, the streets of Paris were empty and littered with limp flowers and bouquets. As tired eyes watched the sun come up, the new day of craziness and recuperation began. The ding . . . ding . . . ding ... of the announcements tells us of upcoming concerts. Again we are reminded of flute music filtering from the practice rooms, base drums vibrating the build- ing and eminent voices drifting from the Little Theatre. An announcement of the dance on Friday starts us jamming and our feet cut Footloose! Chief Entertainers The blizzard that covered us with 12- 15 inches of snow on Sunday, Dec. 1, will always be remembered by the 1 10 members of the Marching Chiefs. December 1 st was the date picked for the band to perform at the Green Bay Packer vs. Tampa Bay football game. An uncountable number of hours were spent by the band in putting to- gether the show โ€” complete with an explosive fireworks display. Hours of sketching by Mr. Mackin, hours of re- hearsing music . . . lifting, dragging, and tugging at flags, rifles, tubas, and basses from the old band room, across the crowded parking lot ... down the flight of stairs ... between bulldozers digging up the circle ... down an- other tiresome flight of stairs to lower campus . . . hours spent listening to Mr. Mackin's stupid megaphone . . . hours of guide up freshmen! .. . and Mrs. Kramers unending clap . .. clap ... clap ... The snowy day before showtime had to have been the most nerve-racking when the flags and rifles turned the snow-covered football field into a snowy maze of footprints and designs. Despite all of this the band did not perform. The Marching Chiefs realized the only thing left to do was to curl up in front of the T V. and watch the Packers defeat the Buccaneers in the Snow Bowl 21-0. There was something to justify this nasty disappointment, however, and that was the Spring Fling competition in Orlando, Florida. Because Florida's cli- mate does not include Wisconsin bliz- zards. 86 BAND: Rifles: L Guden, C Niemuth, B. Polk, C. Sanders, Drum Maiors: L. Neubauer, K. Clark, S. Guden, S. Wu- cherer, J. Whether it's your recollection of one of Mr. Ziemann's English classes with hornets humming overhead, the art room's unique wall display of junk, or Mr. Knoke's recollection of the Upper Level Quintet singing Sha Na Na, these characteristics made Lincoln come alive. This life lingered through years and years of educa- tion and now along with 86 we must bid the Lincoln goodbye. โ€ข Mr. Degroots second door drums vibrating the floor the tram-way (the warmest part of the school) flute music filtering up from the practice rooms (undoubt- edly Amy M. or Lynnette H.) ancient porcelain toilets in the Lincoln bathroom the art room's unique wall display of junk art students pounding clay pesty hornets lights rattling overhead Mr. La Fontaine's door slamming as a blunt hint to musi- cians downstairs Mrs. V's rattling heat distributor the emergency exit as a sneaky route to the lunch line for the hungry band students (Mr. Mackin never knew) Mr. Ziemann's Herman Bertha (will they go down with the Lincoln building?!?!) 90 91 92 Faith Serobe our friend from South Africa and Karin Eichmeyer our friend from Ger- many. Foreign Students Every day I have a new experience. I see something new, or eat something new, or learn something every day! explains Karin Eichmeyer, our Rotary Exchange Student from Germany. Karin comes from the city of Bad Salzuflen (54,000 people), in Germany. She has two older brothers at home and be- sides her mother, her father manufactures candy. Karin has enjoyed her stay in America. She enjoyed getting together with other ex- change students and going to the scheduled dances. In comparison to her school at home, BHS had some surprises. The clubs and activi- ties, sports and especially CHEERLEADERS surprised her. Karin feels that people are very open at BHS and Faith Serobe agrees people are friendly everywhere. Faith Serobe, our A.F.S. exchange Student from South Africa comes from the capitol, Johannesburg She has two older brothers and an older sister With three-million people in Johannesburg and the apartheid govern- ment of South Africa, Berlin is quite different. I expected a place like New York. I didn't even know Wisconsin, says Faith. Karin and Faith both agree that Wisconsin is a nice place and the snow is great, but the cold is intolerable. On returning home. Faith will attend col- lege for social work and Karin has two more years of schooling before going on to college. Whatever the girls decide for their future BHS wishes them Good Luck. 93 Senior Achievement Awards Cora Ham Girls Athletics Esther Tovar F.B.L. A jt- I As people say a picture tells a thousand words, we hope this yearbook tells ten-thousand words. For the past year we have combined laughter, smiles, events, and spirit in Mascoutin '86. We hope the reflections in the waves spark your memory so the story goes .., I'm sailing away Set an open course for the Virgin Sea. For I've got to be free Free to face the life that's ahead of me. Come sail away, come sail away with me. On board I'm the captain So climb aboard. We'll search for tomorrow On every shore, And I'll try, try to carry on. I look to the sea Reflections in the waves spark my memory. Some happy some sad. I think of my friends And the dreams we have. We'll live happily forever So the story goes Come sail away, come sail away with me. We'll try our best To carry on ... Being in the spirit, Monica dressed herself and her Cabbage Patch in matching to- gas during Homecoming spirit week. Being herself, Lynnette Hess was chosen from many applicants to be part of the McDonald's All-American High School Band. Shelley Miracle, making herself a clown, enjoys making others laugh at Nursing Homes and Hospitals. 115 Sailin' On a
