School spirit exploited with our week beginning October 9th. As the Berlin Indians reigned a winner over the Wautoma Hornets 14-6. Our own pom-pon squad performed a pre-game show for us with “I’ve done everything for you. By Rick Springfield. The Berlin Marching Chiefs leading a halftime enter- tainment to highlight our week. “Breathtaker performed for our dance that end- ed the week. Awaiting to begin our week activities and antici- pating the class competition which was arranged by our B club and held together by the class members. Monday we began with color day and extra needed strength for our very own Berlin High tug-of-war. 1 tipped my hat for all the pigs at our pie eating con- test Tuesday. But we left Wednesday to the most imaginable as it was crazy day as well as our noon hour activities of balloon tosses and cageball. Our traditional bonfire was held on Thursday with super turnout and lots of enthusiasm. Our 2nd annual powderpuff contest was held all week. The girls from all classes got in shape for their games. The seniors, after a very hard struggle but well fought game, pulled out ahead and won. Voting for the homecoming court was also a chal- lenge this year as one guy and girl represented their classes as well as five couples from the senior class. Our school spirit shined especially at our pep as- sembly beginning Friday afternoon as each class presented their skits. The faculty showed their pride as principal R. Ganka led their band REO! The moment now arrived 411 was quiet as we all awaited to hear the names of Mr. and Miss Berlin. Very choked up Were Doug Petraszek and Cindy Eldrcd. After the parade and the spirit yelling contest, we all headed home to make final preparations for the perfect evening ahead. Ears were perked and fingers were crossed as the results were announced. The freshmen took a first on their float, “Indians’ power kills on contact.” Sophomores unfortunately couldn’t put it a good shot. Juniors with “Stripes” took first on the skit and seniors swept the window competition with “Extra extra Hornets will be exterminated. When Claudia does graduate she would like to become a lawyer Claudia thought the people were very nice and a little crazy' We will miss Claudia when she goes W'e hope she learned some good, good things, like being crazy! It never hurts any one. We bid her always good luck in the future. Hiro Ni himura “Students in the United States are more comfortable in school and have more freedom than we do in Japan. says Hirohisa Nishimura. this year's AFS student. “Students enjoy school in America and Hiro does too! He also likes the small town of Berlin, however, it is very different from his hometown of NagayO, which has a population dose to 2.000.000 But even though he comes from a larger city, he also comes from a family that is half the size of the Martin Barnard's, with whom he is staying l live with my sister. Mari, and my father, who is a bankteller. and my mother Hiro became interested in coming to the U.S. as an AFS student when a friend of his told him that it was a nice experience, and for Hiro. it has been. He has never felt loo far from home, however, because the clothing styles and music trends are about the same in both countries, just as some of the food is. “We also have McDonald's he said AFS 15 Senior Achievements R I- Kelly Richmond Yearbook Shari Lehman Yearbook David Bartol Boys Athletics R. 2- Peter Trochinski Boys Athletics Margaret Yankowski Girls Athletics Doug Rodencal FFA R. 3- Brenda Becker FBL Elizabeth Krueger Forensics Maria Hibicki Drama R. 4- Cindy Eldred Music Jaculin Starks FHA Joseph Ruf DAR Michele Paulsen Red V Green SENIOR ACHIEVEMENTS ACADEMIC HONORS: R. Borchardt, E. Hansen. Hiro, K. Hcisc, N. Rocthel, L. Chimlack On August 20, 1980, while many BHS students were enjoying their last few days of vacation, future choir direc- tor, Pam Schroeder, was searching for an aprtment. “I finally found one the Monday before school started she recalls. She had just come to Berlin after spending an exciting summer in Opryland for her second time. Last summer she performed in Showboat. This year, she was an understudy for I hear America Singing and For Me and My Gal.” In the spring of 1980, Miss Schroeder had graduated from UW Madison. Although there is a great deal of difference between Berlin and Madison, Miss Schroeder found it easy to adjust. This was her first year at BHS and as a choir director, the choral program basically remained the same. We have a lot of talented people with plenty of poten- tial,” she concluded. 104 Choir The Sound of Music FRESHMAN CHOIR Row I — Miss Schrocdcr, M. Simon. K. Kujava. K. Dretske, S. Ganks, T Gunka. In twenty years from now, we can look back on the fun times we had with the yearbook — even if we can not remember — any of them now. The skipped deadlines and late hours will probably be worth it when we look back on our high school years. The Year 1981-1982 The year seemed to slip by so fast, where did the time go? Now all we have is but a few memories. It started with anx- ious seniors waiting to graduate and underclassmen moving up a spot in the world Memorable trends, sometimes silly ones we always followed and will never forget. Like soap operas, the computer games, the preppies in there own world, music and fashion trends of every kind. Even though they w ere moments of sadness we all had to face, all in all it was a pretty good year and all we have left are memories. And Forever 115 116 From Yesterday, For Today, And For Ever 9
