The night was young, the sky was dark, A cyclist sped by the park. His leather coat flapped in the air, With yellow helmet, dark brown hair. The grains of time stood briefly still. But slowly, then, the glass did fill. July sixteenth, a common day. Would end in such a tragic way. At seventeen, Pat Page did ride His cycle was his joy and pride. To race the wind on gilded wings Meant more to him than other things. Brown eyes would sparkle with delight When he'd defy that word called fright And as he made that fateful turn. His headlight dimmed, then ceased to burn. Reaching down to fix the beam, He rode the curb, his tires did scream. Cycle and rider, still in control... But darkness hid the telephone pole. As dawn approached, while Berlin slept. His father and his mother wept To see their first son die so young Before he'd had his praises sung. Without good-bye, he breathed his last And to the next world his soul passed. If we cried, he'll never know-- It's sometimes hard to let love show. can you feel him in your heart hear the echo softly start though he's absent for a while you again will see him smile past the distant shores of pain beyond our world he lives again But as I look up to the sky, I see the clouds and wonder ... why?
