Superintendent Nothing is accomplished without a dream. We have become so used to the wonders of natural science that, like the simple stuff of bygone years, they lead to metaphor as much as to amazement. Take Mariner 4 on the way to the vicinity of Mars, trying to be like Coleridge's earlier Ancient Mariner-- The first to ever burst. Into that silent sea.” Everyone needs a star to steer by. And no one always picks the right star. When Mariner 4's photoelectric sensor seemed confused about which celestial body to choose. Jet Propulsion Laboratory computers ordered it to renew its search for the cor- rect star. Whether you and I follow a constant star or one that moves with the times; we must be sure that something within us keeps us on the right track. I remind you simply there is such a thing as right and wrong. There still exists a moral code and ancient commandments, and you do wrong when you flout them. IDEALS are still the best STAR to use for a guide. May God Bless!

Principal All schools, especially secondary schools, are going through troubled but exciting times. The public high school seems to be the target for most of the verbal and written brickbats. These, so called brickbats, are being hurled mainly by newspa- pers, magazines, university personnel, politicians, and community leaders. Stu- dents in some schools have gotten into the act by protesting for changes in anything for the sake of change. Everyone is crying change and most of these sources have no proof as to whether the changes would be beneficial or not. Educational sources are advocating many quick remedies or panaceas for the appar- ent ills of the schools. Among these are team teaching, independent study, non- gradedness, performance contracting and a more relevant curriculum. Past history of education points out quite clearly that there are no panaceas. How- ever, history also shows that when the public becomes concerned about schools the over-all result is good. Berlin High School is taking a common sense approach to the educational revolu- tion by studying the innovations and taking from them the things which will benefit us. Traditional practices will continue here as long as they are practical and at the same time we will try new practices which appear to hold promise. As principal, I would like to commend the students, teachers, and people of our school community for their cooperation in allowing transition to take place without disruptive controversy. 7 Principal
