Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1971 volume:

If a man does not keep pace with his companions perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away. Thoreau Mascoutin Volume Fifty-Four Berlin High School Berlin Alumni Association — One Hundred Years Alumni Officers: Miss Haroldine Root, Miss Grace Root, Miss Louise Nowakowski, Mr. Glen Brooks, Joyce Stemler. ALUMNI SONG Again we meet, once more to greet The friends of years gone by: Once more as schoolmates now we sing, As happy moments fly. Oh, those old days can ne'er return! But at this season dear We call them back to mind again While we are gathered here. We'll clasp the hands of those who've come To join our happy throng: They're welcome, who have journeyed o'er The paths we trod so long. And ere we part, oh give a thought To meetings that are o'er- To places vacant here tonight, To faces seen no more. RAH! RAH! RAH! HAIL ALMA MATER! The staff of the 1971 yearbook dedicates this yearbook to all the alumni of Berlin High School. Who could have imagined that from the early beginning of the first alumni association in 1871 by Principal Fletcher, there would remain in continuous operation the Berlin Alumni Associa- tion? Today the Berlin graduates come back and renew old acquaintances at the alumni banquet. Many Berlin grads have gone on to distinguish themselves in the fields of business, education and the arts. It is the sincere hope of the staff, the Berlin Alumni Association will continue to make the impact on future graduates as it has in the last 100 years. --Franketa Dresser '86 Principal Fletcher Board Of Education ROW 1: John Bjorge, Supt.; Harold Spangler, Clerk; Harold Gatzke, Pres.; Glen Michaels, Treas.; Howard Barnes. ROW 2: Philo Goodrich, Jr.; Rae Spirra; Russell Harrison; Rodger Field; Harvey Gelhar. Ervin Ehrlich STANDING COMMITTEES, 1970-71 Planning- Personnel Spangler, Field, Spirra Finance-Legislative Goodrich, Gelhar, Michaels Building and Grounds Barnes, Field, Spirra Transportation Harrison, Goodrich, Barnes. Ervin Ehrlich became a member of the School Board in 1955 and retired July 1970, af- ter 15 years of service to the Berlin School System. He served on the board during the reorganization and change from a city, system to a common school district and was instrumental in this change. Much of the change and growth took place under his leadership as Director of the board during the 60's. He saw the high school grow from under 500 to over 750 students and the total entolled students to almost 2000. We wish you well in your retirement and hope that your retirement will be as fruitfull as your years of service to the Berlin School System. 3 m seniorsDANGESj •n liiif HOME GRADUATION WORK® E SPLAY JU ADMIN-F™ QISTRATION n c tfl Superintendent Nothing is accomplished without a dream. We have become so used to the wonders of natural science that, like the simple stuff of bygone years, they lead to metaphor as much as to amazement. Take Mariner 4 on the way to the vicinity of Mars, trying to be like Coleridge's earlier Ancient Mariner-- The first to ever burst. Into that silent sea.” Everyone needs a star to steer by. And no one always picks the right star. When Mariner 4's photoelectric sensor seemed confused about which celestial body to choose. Jet Propulsion Laboratory computers ordered it to renew its search for the cor- rect star. Whether you and I follow a constant star or one that moves with the times; we must be sure that something within us keeps us on the right track. I remind you simply there is such a thing as right and wrong. There still exists a moral code and ancient commandments, and you do wrong when you flout them. IDEALS are still the best STAR to use for a guide. May God Bless! Principal All schools, especially secondary schools, are going through troubled but exciting times. The public high school seems to be the target for most of the verbal and written brickbats. These, so called brickbats, are being hurled mainly by newspa- pers, magazines, university personnel, politicians, and community leaders. Stu- dents in some schools have gotten into the act by protesting for changes in anything for the sake of change. Everyone is crying change and most of these sources have no proof as to whether the changes would be beneficial or not. Educational sources are advocating many quick remedies or panaceas for the appar- ent ills of the schools. Among these are team teaching, independent study, non- gradedness, performance contracting and a more relevant curriculum. Past history of education points out quite clearly that there are no panaceas. How- ever, history also shows that when the public becomes concerned about schools the over-all result is good. Berlin High School is taking a common sense approach to the educational revolu- tion by studying the innovations and taking from them the things which will benefit us. Traditional practices will continue here as long as they are practical and at the same time we will try new practices which appear to hold promise. As principal, I would like to commend the students, teachers, and people of our school community for their cooperation in allowing transition to take place without disruptive controversy. 7 Principal Teachers prepare us for life MR. Since visiting the U. S. she has found that she likes Berlin and our school, plus American sports and music. The A. F. S. is an organization in which they give us an opportunity to learn customs and languages that are different from our country. The A. F. S. is not only an opportunity it is also an idication of the future. When I first arrived I was impressed with the houses, because of the different construction. My country uses adobe brick and stone where you use wood. Eleven months is a long time where one encounters new experiences in this wonderful country. Some of the things that interest me are food, customs, High School, snow, the winter cold, and the friendly people. Sound busy? You're right. A Badger State citizen participates in all of these activities to learn about his local, county and state governments. While acting as a func- tional part of his government at this mythical state, each citizen meets scores of others his own age, and learns how much they all have in common. Plus learning about government. Bad- ger Staters get a chance to hear speak- ers, go on tours, and, amid all the activity, still find time to have fun. The boys compete fiercely in sports and those at Girl's State enjoy gab sessions and especially quiet time just before bed. David Secora Berlin t V V I Sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxilliary, Badger State teaches democracy in government, citizenships and patriotism. It shows how cooperation and respect for others can bring about strong institutions. In addition. Badger State provides an ex- perience of living, learning, and having fund with other teenagers. A thank-you to the sponsoring organi- zations, and to the 1971 delegates, congratulations! Glenn Hoeft Poy Sippi Area 35 Juniors manage to escape 4th place rut ... T. Alf M. Albashian D. Anderson R. Organization for all class projects is initiated by its officers. However, the biggest task is that of Homecoming organ- ization and Prom-building. To the officers, these events require hours of valuable time organizing committees and checking work. Amid the frenzy they patch up quarrels, make compromises, and try to keep smiling. Here, class officers learn to appreciate the help and understanding of teacher- advisors. In all class endeavors, stu- dents look to their officers for leadership to unite the forces into a combined effort. Excluding the individual senior pictures in the opening of the book, all pictures were taken and developed with the skilled hands of expert staff photographers. As in any organization, certain members do the lion's” share of work. It would be very difficult to mention all who were involved in the strenuous hours of work that goes into the production of an outstanding yearbook. These young people felt the constant pressure of the upcoming deadline up- on them, as they worked to organize, type, and edit the book in time. Blood, Sweat MASCOUTIN STAFF: ROW 4: I. Burkards, M. The Curators Club of B. H. S. recognizes this fact, and has taken upon itself to help preserve the heri- tage of Berlin and its sur- rounding communities. This year, club members took up the project of put- ting of film Berlin High School life in 1970. In the course of learning, students often find that it is necessary to supplement their classroom text- books with outside information. Berlin High School is proud of its fine library facilities, where stu- dents can come in during their free hours and browse through the many books, magazines, records, and tapes. Library Assistants helD with book sales, find magazines, and provide record and tape players for students. They also make posters and help construct bulletin boards and dis- plays for the library. The Media Center seats 85 students. Eight sound proof booths give stu- dents an opportunity to listen to re- cords and view filmstrips without interruption. The Audio Visual Center, located across the hall, provides the school faculty and Media Center with vari- ous teaching aids, such as project- ors, record players and overhead projectors. Let's take a look at a typical month during which the paper is put together, and see what really goes on. On the first day the size and the date when the paper will be distributed must be decid- ed. The staff also decides what stories will be used in this paper. These stories are then assigned to the reporters. The second day the features are assigned and the stories from the Beat system are as- signed to the students in Journalism I. Pic- tures that will be taken are also decided upon. If a story has a good picture idea a picture for that story is set up. On the sec- ond day a deadline is also set for all stories. The next week and a half is used for students to write their stories. The reporter must get his interview through which he gets his facts and quotes. Each reporter must type his story and have it in by the deadline along with a headline. During this time most of the pictures are also taken. The next three days are used to type the copy for the paper. This is done by mach- ines at the Berlin Journal. The copy is then proofread and all corrections are made. By the time this is done it’s the end of the third week. The first three days of the fourth week are used to lay-out the paper. This is difficult to do because you can fit only so much copy on one page along with the pictures. The Wednesday and Thursday of the fourth week the paper is printed. The papers are back by Friday and are distrubuted on that day. 57 At semester time the Red 'n Greens are sent to the National Scholastic Press Association where they are rated and evaluated. B CLUB The boy's B Club is an honorary organization composed of boys who have been awarded a letter in any sport. Since the club's organization in 1924, it has been one of the most exclusive clubs in B.H.S. The club's aim is to further atheletic interest, stim- ulate school spirit, and to foster good sportsman- ship and teamwork. It is not only the club and its activities which makes it so important in the high school career of boys, but the meaning of its purpose, the hon- ors and the accomplishments gained by its mem- bers, which inspires the younger boys, and makes a great distinction from membership in other organizations. This year, as in previous years, the B Club has co-sponsored the annual Homecoming dance, which was a big success. ”B Club also sponsors an atheletic banquet in the spring. Eleven Junior Dairymen represented Berlin High School's Junior Dairymen chapter and brought home seven trophies. The chapter won second place for work in Junior Dairymen cow classification. At the Green Lake County fair this past summer, an act- ive member of FFA, Charlie Przybyl, took all honors with a Grand Champion hog. The carcus of the Grand Champion was then purchased by the FFA as part of their observance of Championship Pork Week. In October, Jane Korn, the only female member of the club, won the individual land judging contest for the state. This award enables Jane and other active members to at- tend the National Land Judging Contest in Oklahoma in the spring. Wisconsin is known for it's cheese industry. Recognizing this fact the Berlin FFA tries to promote cheese products. During the Christmas season they set up cheese displays in downtown bank lobbies and distribute cheese as Christ- mas gifts. The goals of the Future Farmers of America are to expand their members educational experience and to interest people in agriculture. Future Farmers try to increase the members participation in agricultural activities, encourage ownership of products and develop leaders. Future Fanners Judging Team: D. Thompson, A. Tetzke, J. This organization once included nearly all of the girls in the school, but since then, its membership has steadily decreased to the small group that remains today. Girls League is a service club. At Christ- mas time the club members go from class to class collecting money from the student body. These donations are used to buy the food needed to stock Christmas baskets that are delivered to needy families in the com- munity during the Christmas season. The clubs main aim is to encourage more friendly feeling among the girls of all of the four classes. 62 Girls League and Key Club On those chilly autumn nights, while cheering the football team on to victory, remember how good it felt to munch on a big warm hotdog? As a part of their fund raising project, the club sold refreshments and food at games and dances. Part of the money recieved from these projects was used to purchase new school pennants for the gym. The High School boy’s Key Club was first begun in 1965; the first club of its kind to be chartered in the world. It was founded on the fiftieth anniversary of the Kiwanis Club to which it is affiliated. Meetings are held on weekday mornings before school begins, and rolls and milk are provided for the club member’s breakfast. Key Club: ROW 4: M. Pinkall, J. Bahr. ROW 3: B. Bitney, T. Gonyo, J. With what restrictions?” With the limitations that the administration had advised! But in the end it all depends on the kids. One of the most important organizations at Berlin High is the Student Council. The council is composed of members chosen from each class. The main functions of the council this year have been; the improvement of the physical appearance of the school, the betterment of school spirit by encourage- ment of pleasant relations between the students and fac - ulty, the sponsoring of the community chest, taking care of selling class pictures, helping support foreign exchange student, feeds the athletes, provides buses for the away games and sponsoring scholarships. The Future Nurses of America mainly deals with stu- dents who want to carry-out their careers in medi- cine. They meet once each month and hold a discus- sion about nursing, occasionally having a guest speaker. Each hour of every day one of the club members is responsible for the sickroom, or nurses office, which means the handling of any problems which may result while they're there. One of the projects of this club is to visit the old peoples homes and talk with many of the patients. This year during Halloween the club made table dec - orations for the homes. A new club this year, the science club, is the first of its kind since the 1930's. The club's ten members have tried to de- velop leadership in this field, to appre- ciate science and to create enthusiasm for scientific learning among and by students. Among the projects of this year's pro- gram is a field trip to a paper mill and performing experiments with model rocketry. The clubs advisor is Mr. Bull. The advisor is Miss Guertler. 66 ROW 3: J. We’re from Berlin, couldn’t be prouder, Varsity Cheerleaders: Colleen Beaman, Julie Schiltz, JoAnn Cismoski, Lori Helstad, Sue Osterberg, Barb Caldwell. Hey, you! Down in front! Move aside, girl, can't you hear me? Get down, you’re not the only one watching this game! Those cheerleaders, can't they understand we just want to watch the game? No cheerleader is going to get me to yell at the top of my lungs! Cheerleaders are ready to cope with similar situations, and know how to deal with ornery fans. By channelling enthusiasm, they organize team sup- port. It's always easy to back the team during a winning season when school spirit is at a peak. But students' sup- port must not fail, letting the team down. Loyal fans don't desert their team when the going gets rough. 74 if you can’t hear us, we’ll yell a little louder! Another job handled by the cheerleaders concerns sportsmanship. Their job in- cludes initiating crowd support and building it, but they also try to make good sportsmanlike conduct a rule at every event by respecting authority and accepting decisions. Activities of this year's squads included rousing enthusiasm, making all sorts of signs, and heading homecoming pep act- ivities. Varsity cheerleaders distribut- ed Better Than Best buttons and at- tended a VW game following a clinic. The wrestling squad accompanied the wrestlers to several tournaments in addition to regular meets. This year's captains were Barb Caldwell, Mary Jo Thull and Lisa Perry. J. V. The 1970-71 Wrestling team began practice Monday, November 2nd with 9 letter winners returning and high hopes of winning the championship in the new East Central Conference. The home opener meet brought an 18-0 decision win over Waupun and a lot of smiles to the Team and coaches. The victory gave the guys enough spirit to lift them through the season with an 8-1-1 record, and gave them the conference championship. Wrestling is a sport of self denial and dedication. Many students recall nar- row escapes of being mowed down by wrestlers running off weight after school. We seldom realize that this is what made the team; individuals put- ting forth their final test. Suddenly he becomes the team, and the outcome of his struggle depends on his prepar- ation. It is one of those sports where none of the participants can say it was the fault of one of the other play- ers. It is a man to man confrontation.' We of Berlin High are proud of all of you! But for some thirty odd players, the season was already three weeks in duration. Two weeks of two-a-days, the mile run, and then first hints of com- bat in a controlled scrimmage. To be perfectly honest, Berlin came to Men ash a looking for an easy win. We'd beaten them the yeir before, and we felt we only had to show up to win. We were sadly mistaken Latex on is the last time weTose!,,‘ Witdthe coming of conference plrfy, came the victories. At Ripon, we played just hard enough to win. Berlin High School was represented in State-wide Competition this past year as three outstanding Seniors showed their athletic ability. Larry Hollmaier was chosen as the most valuable player of this year's football team. His value showed as he gained 100 yards per game and 7 yards every time he carried the ball. Two of his outstanding games, against Ripon and Weyauwega, earned him the honor of Oshkosh Daily Northwestern Prep Player of the week. As the B. H.S. Indians went on to be a unan- imous choice for the all conference team and was chosen as a half-back on the second all-state football team. Larry's record breaking 1315 yards and 104 points will stand in B.H.S. record books for many years. Gary Williams, an outstanding hurdler, made his bid for a school record in the spring of 1970. Hurdling both the lows and highs, he ran times of 20.00 seconds and 14. 65 seconds, respectively, to break the old records of 20.7 seconds and 15.00 seconds, set by Gerry Gerth in 1965. Gary’s competetive spirit lead him to be the Class B State Champion with times of 20.4 seconds and 14. 8 seconds (lows and highs.) John Trochinski, heavyweight wrestler of B.H.S., placed fourth in the State Tourn- ament in Madison. To qualify for state competition, he took 1st. place in both Regional and Sectional action. Throughout the year, John compiled a fine record of 23 wins and 4 losses including 10 pins and 17 takedowns. 90 Homecoming Happiness HOME COMING As the years go by home- coming has come to mean more and more to the students of Berlin High School. Each year alumni from past attend this annual event, to relive the excitement of their past homecomings. The 1970 homecoming was full of fun and excitement for the stu- dents and faculty of Berlin High School. Classes and clubs worked all week to make it one of Berlin's best homecomings. After a thrilling parade a rally was held at the Clay Lamberton field. The results of the days preceding events were presented. Not a creature was idle-for the night looked grim. The streamers were twined 'round about the stairs, White and green crepe unwrapped with care. A Christmas tree stood stately in the gym. While students put lights on every limb. There was Jeanne and Barb and Kathy and Tim, Larry and Don and Jim . . . All were working with industrious speed To finish by eight - THE time indeed! For darkness had fallen, so much was undone . . . Imported elves would have helped some! But finally the gym was clean and decorated. With the tree in the center for the event awaited. The Key Club set up tables and opened the doors. And couples arrived-to dance on the floor. Handsome young men dressed up for the night Escorted their dates who were out-a-site! Swirls and curls and Goldilocks hair Intermingled with holly and mistletoe there. Then came the special time of ten For the court had arrived; ready to march in. The couples walked in perfect time And formed a Christmas tree around the pine. The Key Club gave Val a bouquet of roses. And for a moment there were sniffling noses. Then Queen Val and King Dave Reigned over the Snowball till the night was over. So thus, on December nineteenth, nineteen seventy Was the Senior Snowball... now a cherished memory. They’ve gathered their troops and made plans to attack. But what if they lose? The Grand Fenwickians don't care, they'll still come out on top--the United States always boosts the foe's economy. Keep your distance! No, no, don't touch! Careful! Stop! What's this? A Q-bomb? The soldiers of Grand Fenwick have captured it—plus a scientist and a general! The future of the United States looks dark as Grand Fenwick seizes power. Finally, though, as a result of hectic negotiations, Grand Fenwick's wrath is calmed. The 1971 Senior Class Play, The Mouse That Roared is the identity of this upset. Not complete- ly comical, the little country points out that war really is silly. pack up ... head out ... unpack .. pack up .. . head out ... pack up . .. unpack . .. head out June 5th., 5:00 A. M. -take off. Captain and navigator, Mr. Bjorge, gave the signal to start the engines. They left Berlin behind to explore the Wild, Wild East. The long ride became monotonous, but soon students devised forms of enter- tainment. Others kept themselves a- mused by reading EXODUS, playing whistling guessing games, singing and playing cards. Bus one had two cheer- leaders whose favorite cheer was With a Ve-Vo, with a Vi-Vo! The only time they cheered was when everyone else was sleeping. Bus two had more origin- ality by staging pillow fights and a class trip pageant. Remember the little girl's comb and brush set, the oreo cookies and the canned pears? The group of Berlinites toured Washington, D.C. The Washington Monument provided exer - cise-1000 steps! That was only for am- bitious people like Jean Helmrick. Say, didn't she almost get left behind? At Arlington Cemetery a wreath was placed at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. After the ceremony, majority ruled on seeing President Kennedy's grave, in spite of rain. Following a display at Fort McHenry, the buses rolled into New York City where they toured Greenwich Village. Those who took the Manhattan Island cruise found it to be relaxing; Debbie Parsons and Joan James caught a nap while sightseeing. The New Yorkers didn't seem to sleep at night, either, as Times Square was swarming with people at midnight. After seeing the OUT OF TOWNERS at Radio City Music Hall, the excitement began when John Seising fell in the bathroom and was rushed to a hospital. Joan Nestler had some thrills when she asked comedian Charlie Kal- las if he was Dean Martin's uncle! The buses traveled to see Plymouth Rock, Walden Pond and the Liberty Bell. In Canada everyone said good -by to Pierre. See Gail. See Colleen. See Gail and Colleen push those Freshmen into a locker. Why are they doing that? What's the matter with those naughty Freshmen? Oh, oh. They aren't being naughty they're going to have their picture taken. Look, look. Here comes that noisy 'B' Club again. Why is Norman hanging over the balcony like that? He already took their picture yesterday, and the day before yesterday, and the day before that! See Colleen run. See Gail run. See Colleen and Gail run into each other. Oh! Oh! What are they saying? Those are new words! It is five o'clock. It is dark outside. Why don't they go home? They must have missed another deadline I We realize that by now you must all think we're totally in- sane. But producing the Mascoutin included planning, sched- udling and taking pictures, re-planning, re-scheduling and re-taking pictures and then laying out all 116 pages, which is guaranteed to drive anyone up a wall! Sometimes we were totally confused, but Mr. Wahlers always knew what to do and straightened things out. We really appreciate all he's done for this Mascoutin. We've tried to organize the events of 1970-71 into an ad- equate record. Now, when you fill the spaces with your special memories-your BHS diary will be complete. And if twenty years from now you can take out your Mascoutin, and laugh and cry over your high school experiences-well, that's all we ever hoped to accomplish. Gail Wiecki and Colleen Beaman 1971 Mascoutin Co-Editors 104 REMINISCING AND HERE COMES TOMORROW With everything familiar in the past, One must realistically sit back and smile, We all really had a fun-loving time, Through adolescent heartbreaks and all. Library books over-due and you forgot the dime to pay. Math exam today and you don't have a new pencil. Game tomorrow night, it's the last one of the season. Here we sit reminiscing and someone's knocking. Walking leisurely through the halls glancing at faces. That certain beaming someone smiled at me again today, Wish Friday night would hurry up and come for us. And here we sit reminiscing and someone's knocking. Seniors, next fall you won't walk over the old balcony, You won't smile at all your taken-for-granted friends, You'll be split from most of those smiling faces; And familiarity will be something unreal but coveted. Speak high of BHS and your old classmates. They put up with you and shared with you for four years. They'll think of you now and then, do the same for them. And here we sit reminiscing now and someone's knocking; Here we sit reminiscing and here comes tomorrow.
