MASCOUT N Indian Reservation Volume Fifty-Three Berlin High Berlin, Wisconsin In Recognition MR. RAYMOND DROVER The Mascoutin editors of 1970 wish to recognize Mr. Raymond Drover for his outstanding ser- vice to the Berlin School System. Mr. Drover was born in a rural Waushara County farmhouse in 1907. He received his elementary education at a nearby country schoolhouse. He graduated from Berlin High School in 1924 and attended the Green Lake County Normal Teachers College for one year. His first teaching position was at a rural Dodge County school where he taught grades 1 through 8. Later he moved to Red- granite where he taught at a state grade school. He received his bachelors degree from Oshkosh State Teachers College and his masters degree in administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Later he taught at Campbell sport High School for three years. He taught mathematics and science and coached basketball and baseball there. During the depression in 1933, he took the position of principal of Washington School here, in Berlin, and held that position until he became principal of ClayLamberton School seven years ago. Mr. Drover has been in the teaching profession for 43 years and during that time he has taught all grades, 1 through 12. Mr. Drover will be missed by his former students, but leaving the teaching profession will give him some time for gardening, cabinet making, hunting and many of his other hobbies. We've all heard the expression, Our high school years are the best years of our lives.” Right now we say, “If these have been our best years then they can have 'eml” We feel this way be- cause the bad times are foremost in our minds. But, thinking about it, there have been good times, and these are the ones which will be remembered. We entered high school as green freshmen and were enveloped by the new surroundings and the superiority of the upperclassmen. As sophomores, life seemed a little more relaxed. We were carefree and enthusiastic about everything. Our junior year brought the most outstanding memory of high school years--the Junior Prom. A lot of hard work and cooperation from all the kids proved worthwhile, because it was beautiful! And now, since the beginning of our senior year, we have anticipated graduation. Our four years of high school are coming to an end. During these past years, each of us has had true friendships. But we've also had our disagree- ments, usually stemming from trivial matters or petty jealousies. Perhaps, this fighting is nor- mal, after being together for such a long time--but it is also very sad. Let us hope that some day we may all Come Together in peace and friendship. We, the editors of this book, wish all of you the best of luck in the future, in hopes that all of your dreams may someday be fulfilled. Naomi Sievers and Mary Pat McMonigal Co-editors Superintendent THE HIGH SCHOOL OF THE SEVENTIES AND ITS STUDENTS It isn't easy to communicate student and teacher feelings about educational trends in the decade of the Seventies. Both take for granted the many changes which already have taken place. Joint faculty-student planning, involvement and participation in projects are common. We know that this generation of young adults must be prepared for a highly mobile, complex and chang- ing society. Rapid advances in technology solve, but also create, problems. Widespread and instant methods of communication bring the concerns of the world people into our homes. The ever continuing knowledge explosion may make many current occupations obsolete. It will mean new avenues of approach to the work- ing world, it will make leisure time mandatory and it will make continuing education for adults a way of life. Some basic general assimptions can be made about the instructional program of the Seventies. It can be assumed that the 1970's school will have long range responsibility for developing a program and curriculum that wiII: 1. Personalize individual instruction more and more. This includes individual study, personal counsel- ing and related programs such as Unipacs (packages of varied related materials necessary for learn- ing a particular idea). Mini-courses (short courses of 9 or 18 weeks duration). Programmed instruction (bite size items of information set in correct sequence and planned so that a student knows immedi ately whether his answer is right or wrong.) 2. Fit learning experiences to individual abilities and goals. Fewer and fewer specific courses will be required. Instead there wi 11 be a broad range of learning experiences tailored to meet individual abilities, interests and talents. 3. Broaden the school campus to the city boundaries and beyond. This increases the chance for shared resources and for extending our sources of information. 4. Provide great flexibility and individualization for evaluating student achievement and academic accomplishment. This implies a change in the grading system as we know it. and developing stand- ards of evaluation with measurable behavior as an objective. We see the high school of the decade ahead serving as a launching pad for life-time study, re-study, discovery and evaluation. Young people need the tools of survival to enter a rapidly changing and increas- ingly complex world. They need the tool of UNDERSTANDING MAN. his heritage, his needs, values, accom- plishments. They need the tool of INTEGRITY, honesty, respect for work, respect for himself and for others. They need the tool of JUDGMENT in use of leisure time, in human relationships, in evaluation and accept- ance of ideas and ideals. Principal EVALUATION PROVES SUCCESS OF OUR SCHOOL We all have our own opinions as to the important events of this school year. Everything con- sidered, the North Central Evaluation probably had more impact on our school than any other event. The faculty spent a year and a half in preparing a self evaluation of every aspect of our school. Their work was so thoroughly done that the visiting evaluators found the report accurate in all phases. You students had a responsibility in this evaluation to which you responded with your normal good school citizenship and academic work. All of the above mentioned things were responsible for the very good final report we received from the NCA evaluators. One very important comment, that was evident in nearly every evalua- tors report, was the warm relationship that exists between students and teachers. This is very important because mutual respect and understanding is necessary in order to have learning take place. Besides the written report, many fine verbal remarks were made which alluded to the excel- lence of our school. It will be several years before we have another detailed evaluation but we will continue to keep our standards high as we always have. Berlin High School students can point with pride to their school now and in the future. Principal Teachers Blackboard Jungle MR (GEORGE) HARLAN ADAMS Wis. Stale Umv . Stevens Point. It sets down the basic principles of our society, teaching us to live and cope with most of our daily problems. For me, these school years have been a time for learning- learning to made the most of my life in the best way that I can. I wish to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all my teachers, my family, my friends and fellow students of the class of '70 for four of the most memorable years of my life. JANET NELSON, Valedictorian Satutatorian Learning is a lifetime endeavor. It must not end with just twelve years of formal education. Every activity one takes part in furthers his learning. It all contributes to his general knowledge which will help in the years to come. I sincerely hope that all of my classmates will continue to learn even after graduation. Being named salutatorian of my class is the highest honor I have ever received. I would like to thank everyone who helped me attain this. I would especially like to thank my parents and teachers for all the help and guidance they have given me within the past four years. It is a direct challenge to each of us, for within youth is vested the hope of the world to mold a more meaningful existence. A.F.S. is indeed a give and take, a bittersweet. As a small part of this mighty organization, I have endeavored to reflect to you the warmth of New Zealand. And in return I will take home many new ideas. This has been the most important year of my life, for within it I have found the key to many vital principles; family, home, love, time, citizenship . . . All of this could not have been possible if it were not for the genuine kindness of many Wis- consinites, who opened their hearts and homes to a stranger who wanted to be a small part of their loves. For me, A.F.S. is only beginning. I hope to encourage many more to see life through the eyes of others. Take care of yourselves and others. I will soon be back in the Kiwi country. The Indians were plagued throughout the year by numerous turnovers and poor shooting percentages. But. despite this, the Indians improved steadily, and played some fine basketball, finishing the season with an 8-11 record over- all. and 5-5 in the Conference. Something new was added this year, as the Indians traveled to Menominee. Michigan, to take part in a two-day scrimmage with teams from Menominee. Houghton, and Shawano. Coach Parker hopes that this type of scrimmage may continue in the future. Though our team won only one dual, the work of Glenn Gerth, Larry Hollmaier and Roger Snell Was outstanding. The Freshman-Sophomore meets indicate that we have a good chance of future wins. We should be tough in the weights and discus, also, our relay teams and dash's should be our strengths for the 1970 season. Tennis Row 1 B. Coville. J. Hynson, D. Anderson, B. Clasen, M. Buhrow, J. Member- ship is based on the development and maintenance of high standards. The association includes qualified schools within a nineteen-state area. On March 16, 17, and 18, Berlin High underwent the first complete NCA evaluation since 1908. During this three-day period a team of experienced educators and administrators were present to observe and evaluate our school. The areas which they studied included city-school relationship, curriculum, extra curricular activities, grounds and facilities and guidance. Several evaluators spoke to students and received their impressions of Berlin High. After making these observations, each committee of evaluators compiled a report to be submit- ted to the NCA and also a copy of each report to be on file at Berlin High. This evaluation would have not been possible had it not been for the work of the Steering Com- mittee. The committee was headed by Mr. Crow. Other members included Mrs. Goodrich, Mrs. Jodarski, Mrs. Schroeder, Mr. Parker, Mr. Roethel, Mr. Wahlers and Mr. Doll. However, all of the administrators, teachers and students had a large part in making the evaluation the success it was. Trip How Spent My Summer Vacation Trip Gottcha! They're pale —but weiser”!
