Principal To Sir With Love NORTH CENTRAL EVALUATION Since 1908 Berlin High School has been a member of the North Central Association. Membership in this organization requires the development and maintenance of high standards of excellence for universities, colleges, and secondary schools. The Association includes qualified schools within a nineteen state area. Berlin can point with pride to its long acceptance by the NCA which indicates the high standards we have maintained over the years. Our faculty is now preparing for the first complete NCA evaluation since 1908. This evaluation will take place in March 1970. At that time the NCA will bring in a team of top educators to observe our entire high school program and facilities. Their constructive suggestions and criticisms will be beneficial in keeping our school one of the best. You, as students, have a responsibility in this evaluation. Your responsibility is the same as it should always be: that is to act positively, maintain good school citizenship and do the best academic job possible.

Superintendent VVJ Man For All Seasons THE ROLE OF EDUCATION IN OUR LIVES You may wonder why you are in school. Too many people never even wonder about this. You are in school to learn to solve problems and make decisions by yourself. There are ten mental processes which you must sharpen in order to think and properly develop the ability to rationalize. They are the powers of recalling and imagining, classifying and generalizing, comparing and analyzing and synthesizing, and deducing and inferring. These powers are not all of life or all of the mind, but they are the qualities of the ability to think. Too often, we spend too much time on memorizing and trying to recall facts, when we should also sharpen our ability to organize. So, ask questions. Be curious. Too often, by high school age, the young mind has carefully hidden the desire for knowledge under a layer of conformity, and nonchalance. The happy, spon- taneous school child of the elementary school years changes. Let us use the mental processes to change for the better. The permanent educational value which the learner receives comes from discovering solutions to problems himself.
