C- Volume Fifty-Two Berlin High Berlin, Wisconsin MASCOUTIN Indian Reservation' In Memoriam Roberta Beck Nineteen sixty-five was four years ago, a long time to some, but a relatively short time to most. It was the year we all started out together as ignorant freshmen, thinking the time for graduation would never come. But here that time is and here we are--minus three. Beforetwo fatal automobile accidents claimed their lives, no one thought that these, our very own friends, would not carry out their hopes, dreams, and plans for the future. No one knew Roberta Beck, Tim Polakowski, and Jack Swerzinske would not be in our graduating class of '69. Yes, it's sad to realize that these youths will never receive their diplomas. They'll never be able to go out into the world and fulfill their plans for tomorrow because for them there is no to- morrow-here. But maybe, on the other hand, that's all the better. They'll never have to face up to the evils of money. Or race to keep up with the Jones's . But either way, the students of Berlin High will never forget Roberta, Jack, or Tim. And we, the editors of Mascoutin 1969, would deeply and sincerely like to dedicate this in memoriam to them-- our friends. Retiring this year, are Mrs. Clifford Stevenson, principal of the Poy Sippi School and Mrs. Elsie Madison, who has taught at Record School, Auroraville, and Poy Sippi. We wish to thank them for pursuing their careers as teachers in our school system. In Mrs. Clifford Stevenson Mrs. Elsie Madison Editors The Two of Us Diane Wildermuth, Barbara Kretzmann In order that students might work together in a relaxing atmosphere, a new system has been set up during the students' free period. Students are able to go to the cafeteria, or may go to study hall. Students who want to visit can do so without interrupting those who want to work. The library will be expanded and in use by the 1969-70 school year. Several new fire doors were installed this year to provide better protection in the event of a fire. Tennis has again been added to Berlin High's list of sports. The coach is Mr. Knoke. New courts were furnished on the lower campus for the team to use. There were two other coaching changes made this year. Mr. Tollackson now leads the baseball team, while Mr. Anderson is the track coach. Berlin High again presented a talent show. The co-chairmen were Jayne Stowelland John Olson. The class trip this year will go as far west as the Yellowstone National Park. The travelers will leave on June 6 and return on June 12. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Wahlers for his help in putting this year's Mascoutin together. We hope that the 1969 Mascoutin will help keep the past alive, and in future years will bring back the fondest of memories. As we enter this world, let us hope that peace will begin with us. Too many people never even wonder about this. You are in school to learn to solve problems and make decisions by yourself. There are ten mental processes which you must sharpen in order to think and properly develop the ability to rationalize. They are the powers of recalling and imagining, classifying and generalizing, comparing and analyzing and synthesizing, and deducing and inferring. These powers are not all of life or all of the mind, but they are the qualities of the ability to think. Too often, we spend too much time on memorizing and trying to recall facts, when we should also sharpen our ability to organize. So, ask questions. Be curious. Too often, by high school age, the young mind has carefully hidden the desire for knowledge under a layer of conformity, and nonchalance. The happy, spon- taneous school child of the elementary school years changes. Let us use the mental processes to change for the better. The permanent educational value which the learner receives comes from discovering solutions to problems himself. Principal To Sir With Love NORTH CENTRAL EVALUATION Since 1908 Berlin High School has been a member of the North Central Association. Membership in this organization requires the development and maintenance of high standards of excellence for universities, colleges, and secondary schools. The Association includes qualified schools within a nineteen state area. Berlin can point with pride to its long acceptance by the NCA which indicates the high standards we have maintained over the years. Our faculty is now preparing for the first complete NCA evaluation since 1908. This evaluation will take place in March 1970. At that time the NCA will bring in a team of top educators to observe our entire high school program and facilities. Their constructive suggestions and criticisms will be beneficial in keeping our school one of the best. You, as students, have a responsibility in this evaluation. Your responsibility is the same as it should always be: that is to act positively, maintain good school citizenship and do the best academic job possible. MRS. BARBARA CLASEN Ripon College. Senior Class Advisor Teacher Snaps Valedictorian It is said that education is the one thing that cannot be taken from you. Education is learning for life. This has been my guideline throughout high school. It is, I believe, one of the main reasons for my receiving this high honor. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the teach- ers that have helped me through my four years of high school. I also would like to express my appreciation to the coaches I have had in sports. Sports and band have helped instill in me competitiveness and fair play. To the teachers and coaches, and especially to my parents, I would again like to say. Thank You. JOSEPH MALECKI Saiutatorian Being named saiutatorian of my class is the highest honor ever bestowed upon me. My years at Berlin High School have given me many new experiences and I hope my future years will be just as fruitful. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my teachers and all those who helped to make this honor possible, to wish all my classmates the greatest suc- cess in the future, and to express my sincere hope that all those who have remaining years at B.H.S. will benefit as much as I have. It is a big undertaking but the Mascoutin proves a job well done. In the fall of each year, ideas and themes are decided upon and the students inthe club are assigned a topic in one of the following areas: Make-up ' Typing, Student Faculty, Iden- tification, Sports, Photography, Business Manager, Art, or Headlines and Themes. Two rough drafts of the book are made by the assistant editors; one for the editors to arrange the lay out of the book and the other for the printers. Pictures are taken and copies are written describing the activities of the various clubs and organizations. The results of various sports and music tournaments are also recorded. All this work is done under the leadership of Mr. Wahlers. Only through his help and under- standing does the Mascoutin continue to be a success. Red 'n' Green And the Beat Goes On Row 1: J. The Indians suffered many injuries to important players throughout the season, and beat their opponents in most statistics. At the end of the year the Indians had compiled a total of 96 first downs to the opponents 67; our rushing yardage totaled 1741 yards to 922 yards for the opposition; in total yardage, Berlin again came out on top with 2091 yards to 1650 yards. But unfortunately on the scoreboard Berlin lost by a total of 125 points to 157 points. A few of the highlights were when Coach Klatt's team beat Beaver Dam, 22-7; and also when the Indians defeated their arch-rival, Ripon, 54-0. SCHEDULE Sept. 7 Menasha (N.C.) The main job of the cheerleaders is to back the team, win or lose, and that's just what the girls did. Whether it be football, basketball, or wrestling the girls were always there to offer encouragement and enthusiasm. This year all three squads attended a day long clinic at Wisconsin Rapids. The girls learned new cheers, stunts, and ways to encourage school spirit. The captains of the cheerleading squads are as follows: Varsity, Mary Jean Nelson; J.V., JoAnn Cismoski. The Seniors placed first with their float, They're In Dutch, Wooden Shoe Agree , Juniors second with, We're Armed for Victory , the Sophomores came in Third with their float, We Panda Win , and the Fresh- men fell into fourth place with, We've Got a Victory on the Line. Even though it was a hard fought game, Berlin was beaten by Waupun. The student council and the Cheerleaders co-sponsored a school spirit week. Monday was designated sign day. Tuesday was Sock-it-to-'em Day --everyone was to wear white bobby socks. Wednesday was the day to wear the traditional school colors. Thursday was Team-Thursday where students went out of their way to be kind to football players. Friday ended a very successful week with an Indian dress day. Skits by each class at the pep assembly were also added to the competition this year. The Homecoming dance was the climax to a terrific homecoming week. And so the song goes, but was it really so long ago that we started high school? Let's reflect for a moment what has passed before us in four years. Our freshman year started off with the elections of Gail Wilke and Kathy Lane as representa- tives to the Girls' League. They weren't the only ones elected that year as Gail Luttropp was elected as our only girl president in four years. Her fellow officers that year were Joe Malecki, vice-president; Inez Seabrook, secretary; and Dale Kuklinski, treasurer. We also enjoyed our freshman year because there wasn't anymore initiation. Little did our sophomore class officers, Jerry Teske, president; Jane Kurczek, secretary; and Nancy Dallas, treasurer realize that as they rode in the officers car in the Homecoming parade in 1967 that our float would win second place. Later that year we also won the Hollerin' Jug for yell- ing the loudest at games. We were led on by cheerleaders Carol Chikowski and Vicki Viertel on the varsity squad. Sports was another highlight because our boys won the Little Ten J. V. Cham- pionship in both football and basketball. Soon it was our junior year and sports kept coming. Surely no one can forget that year when many of our boys were on the winning varsity team that won the Little Ten Championship. Later that year the John Boettge Award, given to an outstanding junior athlete, was earned by Roy Franzen. When spring came, thoughts turned to prom. Our theme carried out beautifully and romanti- cally through the use of special lighting, new and unusual background and a misty fountain covered by a flowered canopy was Love is Blue . Gail Wilke and Ricky Leigh reigned over the sentimental and enjoyable affair which was directed by prom chairmen Leone Seaman and Joe Malecki with assistance from Mrs. Schroeder, Mr. Knoke, and Mr. Stebly. There were anxious mo- ments about finishing in time but everything turned out grand . Class officers who also aided were Mike Stobbe, president; Mark Gluth, vice-president; Kathy Lane, secretary; and Dawn Thu 11, treasurer. And then suddenly all too soon it was our senior year with all the problems and happiness only a senior year can produce. Though it was sad because it was our last. Homecoming 1969 was a success. We won a first on our float and bulletin board and second on our skit. As they rode through town, Mr. and Miss Berlin, Tom Drover and Mary Jean Nelson, saw our class with pride and spirit. Class officers who helped see us through Homecoming Spirit Week were Joe Malecki, president; Leone Seaman, vice-president; Sandy Klick, secretary; and Nancy Reuther, treasurer. Our spirit was really high the rest of the year as wrestling cheerleaders Peggy Schneider, Louise Werch, and Dawn Thull joined varsity cheerleaders Mary Jean Nelson, Gail Wilke and Vicki Viertel to help us win the Hollerin' Jug again. Although our teams didn't win any championships we had a few standouts. Tom Drover, voted most valuable player, was also picked as All-Conference-Guard. Co-captains of the team were Paul Rusch and Ken Martin. It was also the year Jerry Trochinski, B.H.S. wrestler, went to state and placed third. Track, basketball, cross country and baseball also had a memorable year. And then there were a few standouts in each of their special fields in 1969. It was the year Linda Youngbauer was chosen as the D.A.R. winner; Betty Erickson as the Betty Crocker winner and Joe Malecki, winning the Outstanding Teenager Award. Other students led the way as Diane Wildermuth president of Student Council. Smoke Signals, B.H.S.'s literary magazine, was run by Sharon Malzhan this year. Keeping the school informed as well as voicing opinions has been the job of Sandy Klick for the past two years. Paula Ursin, director of Madrigal, and John Al Hirt Olson showed that their talents are indeed valuable. Social activities were present also as the Red 'n' Green presented the 1969 Senior Snowball. This dance was dedicated to seniors. The King and Queen were Glenn Gerth and Leone Seaman. Or how about that class play? Rehearsals and opening night are gone now, but the rewards and memories of Luther Olsen as Eldon Berry linger on. And finally, another pretty face will grace our trophy case this year. Senior Addie Dolata reigned as Miss Green Lake County 1968-69. Now all these times are gone and one more school activity, the trip out West, is the last thing we can all participate in together. As we prepare to make our futures and face society let's remember we've already left our mark in the form of changes upon B.H.S. Farewell B. H. S. - - World here we come!
