Principal 1926to 1968 spans an interesting forty-two years in the field of public education. I was a part of it and witnessed many new innovations appearing on the educational front. Many of them were tried and discarded, but the basic purpose of all of them was to find new ways to improve the means of helping young people to become better educated. As principal, I have been concerned with keeping our curriculum or course offerings in line with the changing times. The plain fact, that our 1968 graduates are only thirty-two years away from the 21st century is a challenge to any teacher or administrator. Our graduates are now living in a world where something is new today and outdated tomorrow. We will need to prepare our graduates to realize that they are living in a fast changing world, a world in which they will need to retool their job opportunities several times during a life time. If our schools can prepare them for this change, then we have accomplished much to their future security. I have many pleasant memories of my lifes work in the education field, and I find that the greatest reward comes from students who have gone out and have been successful in their pro- fessions and businesses, who then realize more and more the importance of the help given them by their teachers.

Superintendent Inexorably, the magnitude of the internal problems facing the United States grows. The stead- ily rising population will pass the 200,000,000 mark in a year or so. Vast urban conglomerations spread over the landscape like seeping water. The crime rate soars. Education falls needlessly short of preparing millions of young people for the world they will live in. The air we breathe becomes fouler, and the water around us becomes like paint for use on a house. Natural beauty disappears. And what does this mean to you? You will live in the 21st century. You will live in the year 2001. You must meet this challenge with new ideas and new ideals and new inspirations and new dedications to the values held so highly in America in the past. Man's progress to this time shows that these values are available in abundant measure, but must be tapped by the new generation of thinking young Americans now in our schools. It is up to you to bring fresh, stimulating and penetrating approaches to the old problems in our society. You must not fail.
