uisuoosijfi ut jag t fift ui jaa auQ-fyu aum OA mnoosm dedication The Mascoutin Staff of Berlin High School wish to show their appreciation to Mr. Clyde Shaw for his many years of service in the Berlin School System by respectfully dedicating this 1968 Mascoutin to him. Mr. Shaw, who retired this year, has spent 38 years working for the Berlin School System and community. For this fine service we sincerely thank Mr. Shaw. Mr. Shaw was born in Kingston, Wisconsin in 1902 and received his elementary and high school education in that village. He attended the now non-existent Busheys Business College in Appleton. Upon graduation from Ripon College in 1926, Mr. Shaw began his career by teaching at Markesan High School. Four years later he came to Berlin High School and taught various sub- jects including history, algebra, English and Latin. He received his Masters Degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1948. In 1950 Mr. Shaw became Berlin High School principal and has held that position until the present time. Mr. Shaw's commendable record in educational service speaks for itself. He has been a mem- ber of the National Association of Secondary School Principals since 1950 and also of the Wiscon- sin Education Association and the National Education Association. He has served as either member or chairman of many North Central evaluating committees and several state committees concerning curriculum improvement. Mr. Shaw was also given the distinction of being elected to serve two three-year terms on the WIAA advisory board. During this last year he has acted as President of the Little Ten Conference. In the area of community service, Mr. Shaw's impressive record also deserves well earned praise. He has served on the public library board for 15 years, on the Community Chest Board of Directors for 17 years and as secretary-treasurer of the Mascoutin Club 12 years. Mr. Shaw has also acted as President of the Union Congregational Board of Trustees and been a member of the Masonic Lodge since 1926. Mr. Shaw has said that he greatly enjoys serving and helping the community in any way he can. Mr. Shaw's various interests include golfing, reading, playing bridge and following almost every sport. In the future he hopes to find time to fish and plans to take up the hobby of sketch- ing. Mr. Shaw does not want to take credit for any one achievement because he feels that in to- day's world, nothing can be accomplished except through the cooperation of many people. iV- ■PPPPPB fgg 1916 1928 1928 1961 1930 1945 mTf —1 963 1918 1926 Editors At the end of every year we all look back and review all the fun along with the new and in- teresting events of the school year. The year started off with the Band's Packer Football Game performance in Milwaukee. Also, the band has set a new record on first place ratings at the solo ensemble contest at both district and state competitions. Winning the Little Ten Conference football championship this year was a great feat and we would like to thank all athletes for their great performance and keep it up . Retiring this year are Mrs. Leone Flanigan, Mrs. Dorothy Lalley; Clay Lamberton and Mrs. Lauretta Nelson, Poy Sippi. We would like to express our appreciation for their fine work in ele- mentary education and we wish them well in the future. Next year the seniors will have their choice of the type of American Problems class they wish to take. Political Science, Sociology and Economics are the new courses. This year's school trip is heading out west. They will start out toward Iowa into the Black Hills and tour on to Colorado. As Co-editors we would especially like to thank Mr. Wahlers for all the time and help he has given us. As another year passes on we hope we have captured a few rewarding events in your life and we wish you all the luck in the future. Snaps of Custodians and Office Workers OFFICE WORKERS COOKS CUSTODIANS and MAINTENANCE Superintendent Inexorably, the magnitude of the internal problems facing the United States grows. The stead- ily rising population will pass the 200,000,000 mark in a year or so. Vast urban conglomerations spread over the landscape like seeping water. The crime rate soars. Education falls needlessly short of preparing millions of young people for the world they will live in. The air we breathe becomes fouler, and the water around us becomes like paint for use on a house. Natural beauty disappears. And what does this mean to you? You will live in the 21st century. You will live in the year 2001. You must meet this challenge with new ideas and new ideals and new inspirations and new dedications to the values held so highly in America in the past. Man's progress to this time shows that these values are available in abundant measure, but must be tapped by the new generation of thinking young Americans now in our schools. It is up to you to bring fresh, stimulating and penetrating approaches to the old problems in our society. You must not fail. Principal 1926to 1968 spans an interesting forty-two years in the field of public education. I was a part of it and witnessed many new innovations appearing on the educational front. Many of them were tried and discarded, but the basic purpose of all of them was to find new ways to improve the means of helping young people to become better educated. As principal, I have been concerned with keeping our curriculum or course offerings in line with the changing times. The plain fact, that our 1968 graduates are only thirty-two years away from the 21st century is a challenge to any teacher or administrator. Our graduates are now living in a world where something is new today and outdated tomorrow. We will need to prepare our graduates to realize that they are living in a fast changing world, a world in which they will need to retool their job opportunities several times during a life time. If our schools can prepare them for this change, then we have accomplished much to their future security. I have many pleasant memories of my lifes work in the education field, and I find that the greatest reward comes from students who have gone out and have been successful in their pro- fessions and businesses, who then realize more and more the importance of the help given them by their teachers. CLASS MOTTO: Todays Youth - Tomorrows Hope CLASS COLORS: Light Green and White CLASS FLOWER: Yellow Rose CLASS SONG: Born Free In Memoriam Cleo Rodensal Margo Rodensal Tim Polakowski Jack Swersinske July 4th is a day of traditional celebration and fun throughout the nation. It began just like any July 4th would in Berlin but it ended with a tragic accident. Death is something we are all acquainted with, but never really expect either for ourselves or our friends. Death is thought of as something that comes after we have had our chance to live, to do the things we want to do, and to see our dreams come true. But it doesn't always happen that way. For these four— Margo Rodensal, Cleo Rodensal, Tim Polakowski and Jack Swersinske ---it didn't; they will never have a chance to see their dreams come true. To many of their friends it seems as though they have just taken a long trip and forgotten to tell us where they were going. No one will ever know why they were taken when they were or in the way they were but students and teachers alike miss them. Either we live by accident and die by accident or we live by plan and die by plan. Badger State KATHY HOEFT SALLY SCHRAMER ROY FRANZEN MARK GLUTH JOE MALECKI JERRY TESKE Badger State is a week long program, sponsored by the American Legion, for students who show out- standing abilities in leadership in their high school classes. Badger State, through concentrated study and practice, gives the delegates first-hand knowledge of the organization and functioning of state and local governments. Its purpose is designed to prepare in- dividuals to undertake the future responsibilities of citizens. Juniors flying Aces L. Achterberg J. Anderson S. Belter B. Beyer J. Angle C. Bahr M. L. The main purpose of the Mascoutin Club is to get the yearbook of Berlin High to press. The processing of the yearbook begins in September with the naming of editors and staff and doesn't end until every Mascoutin is sold. It is the job of the editors to construct two dummies describing the various club's activities and the results of sports, music and forensic tournaments. To organize, publish and sell the yearbook is one of the greatest undertakings that any one group of students could hope to accomplish. This is the job the Mascoutin Club does each year. ■■ ■‘MASCOUTIN HISTORY-'1 The Mascoutin, first published in 1917, is now entering its second 50 years of publication. The first Mascoutin was a small soft covered book containing mostly copy. At that time all photography done in the Mascoutin was done by professional photographers. The book was do- nated mainly to the Senior class and had advertisements in the back to help pay for the cost of publication. The yearbook, itself, contained an honor roll list, the senior class poem and a class song. It contained records and pictures of athletes. Besides the sports we have today, there were also girls' golf, and girls' and boys' tennis. Up until 1924, the high school also had an orchestra. In 1935, under the direction of Mr. Carl Wolf, a photography staff was established. The staff's skills have been steadily increasing until today they take all but the individual student pictures. The purpose of the Mascoutin has been, and always will be to record the history of the school year, to capture the spirit of the year, to show the faculty and students, and to record school activity. Berlin won its first game, lost its second and then won 6 in a row. The title went down to the last game of the season when Berlin trounced Ripon, 35-0, to earn sole possession of 1st place. Berlin had leadership, dedication, unity, and the personnel which enabled them to attain the championship. During the course of the season numerous conference records were broken with Berlin achiev- ing most of them. Out of 22 new records, Berlin accounted for 16 of them. Norb Mendleski was a standout throughout the season setting 4 conference records as well as a new school rushing record. He was also the highest scorer in the conference. The girls were always ready to offer their encouragement and enthusiasm. Without them, school spirit would have been nothing. They worked hard all year, giving of their time and effort to make the football and basketball games, and wrestling meets as exciting as possible. Some credit should be given to these girls for all the success our teams have had this past year. It is looked forward to by the entire student body and is the first real test of class participation. The float competition between the classes was particularly close this year. The Seniors placed first with their float, We'll Clip Their Wings, Sophomores came in second with We're Expecting a Victory. The Juniors fell into third place with their float, We're Staging a Vic- tory, and the Freshman, as traditional came in fourth place with We’re Hatching a Victory. After a hard fought game, Berlin romped over Mayville with a score of 27 to 13, a well de- served victory. Our victory dance was the climax to an exciting Homecoming week. The gym was decorated in Shades of Autumn , with music provided by the Lancers. Norb Mendleski and Lynn Buttke reigned over the festivities as Mr. and Miss Berlin. To all it was a memorable occasion. It was produced and directed by Miss Barbara Sire and Mr. Robert Check. The story was a mystery-comedy presented in a souvenir shop which was in Washington's Headquarters located in New Jersey. The plot involved a ghost appearing on the day the head of the Department of the Interior was coming to inspect Washington's Headquarters. Mr. Mathews, who ran the souvenir shop, saw the ghost. He had a hard time explaining and convincing the other members of the cast that he had seen Washington s ghost. But finally everything was cleared up and the museum got back to normal.
