The State and Federal governments are play- ing an increasingly important role in supporting present day educational .costs. Equalization has shifted more of the tax burden on the State gov- ernment. Federal government aid, through the National Defense Education Act, has also supple- mented school funds. The National Defense Education Act has sev- eral areas and is probably the least understood of our Federal Aids. Title III of this act covers the fields of Mathematics, Science, and Modern Foreign Language. Title V covers Guidance, Counselling, and Testing. Portions of the costs involved in these two titles are covered; but, in our situation, less than 50 per cent is reimbursed. These funds have been used to strengthen the various departments and to meet North Central College entrance requirements. However, the general property tax still re- mains the bulwark for school monies. Without the support of these taxpayers, most schools would be hard pressed to maintain a school sys- tem of any appreciable standards. — Ralph Lenz, Administrative Assistant During the past years, Berlin High 'School has expanded its curriculum to meet the needs of its students. Such courses as 4th year math, advanced biol- ogy, record keeping, speech, and advanced drafting have added richness to our offer- ings. A new science laboratory is being planned, thus enabling our school to ex- pand its science offerings. Since we are living in an electrical age, more work in electronics is being planned. In next year’s offerings, there is a new course called vocations, that has as its main objective, to better prepare our graduates for future job opportunities. As soon as facilities are available, art instruction is being planned. Each year our curriculum is reviewed with one thought in mind, to see that it serves the best interests of our students. Changes have been made, and will con- tinue to be made, to keep abreast of the changing times. — C. F. Shaw, Principal
