Mascoutin Volume Berl Berlin, Forty-Seven in High Wisconsin Erwin Ehrlich, Director Harold Spangler, Clerk Charles Miller, Treasurer Richard Barry Harold Gatzke Wilfred Handrich Gordon Janies Glenn Michaels Howard Barnes BERLIN BOARD OF EDUCATION The Board of Education has been working on gigantic projects in the past year. They have supervised the construction of two elementary schools in the district. They are the new junior high school in the city of Berlin and the Poy Sippi elementary school in Poy Sippi. The Poy Sippi school is already open and the Clay Lamberton school will open for the first time in the Fall of 1963. The junior high has been named for Mr. Clay Lamberton, a former superintendent of Berlin High School and well known state educator. Berlin also has taken in many new districts this year. Several “country schools” have been closed and the children attending these schools have been sent to the city schools. Special recognition for 20 years of service is given to Gordon James, who has served the Berlin school system from 1942 to the present time. He served as president of the board from 1952 through 1958, and since that time has devoted most of his efforts as chairman of the personnel committee. CLAY LAMBERTON DEDICATION MR. MRS. CLAY LAMBERTON Because of the assassination of President Kennedy, visitors arriving at the new Clay Lamberton School Sunday, November 24, were greeted by a flag which was flown at half staff. When everyone had assembled in the gymnasium, Mr. Erwin Ehrlich, director of the school board, took the floor as master of ceremonies. The main speaker was William C. Kahl, first assistant state superintendent, who spoke on “Educational Progress Demands Change”. Mr. Clay Lamberton, for whom the school was named, also addressed the group. Mr. Lamberton was formerly a principal and su- perintendent in the Berlin area for over thirty years. The Berlin High School chorus provided musical entertainment for the program with a choral dedication. Miss Donna Decker, vocal director in the Berlin system, presented the solo, Mozart’s “Alleluia”. Reverend Nehrbass delivered the benediction. Then the guests were dismissed to tour the school and were served refreshments in the cafeteria. In view of this, we have tried to make the yearbook as representative of B.H.S. as possible. In sports our boys managed to come out on top, or very close to it, in almost everything. Our trophy case is proof of this. In both forensics and music, Berlin was well represented, sending several members to State in each case. We hope that next year, B.H.S. will be represented abroad, just as we had a most charming foreign exchange student, Heather Mackie from the Republic of South Africa. Also this year, we were very proud to have one of our outstanding faculty members, Mr. George Doll, selected as the Green Lake County Teacher of the Year. For all these reasons, we chose the theme of “school spirit” for the 1964 yearbook. There have been changes, in the arrangement of pictures, and additions in the number of pages. However, in all that is different and all that is the same, we have tried to carry out the theme. — The Editors The inside additon 'Work?? SUPERINTENDENT For the past decade our state experienced a great forward movement in its schools. The emphasis was on school reorganization, building and transportation. Our district has consolidated an area of about two hundred square miles into a district where all the children now have equal educational opportunities. As we look at the years ahead it is quite evident that emphasis on education will con- tinue. The principle of extensive and universal education is firmly established in our society. It is quite obvious that the years ahead will require a different kind of training for our young people. The educational requirements in this age of automation involves more precise basic training in mathematics, science and ability to use the written and spoken language. But of even greater importance is the development of good healthy personalities and behavior patterns in such areas as citizenship, character, and respect for learning. Perhaps the greatest need of the future is more adult education. No one can afford to stop learning upon the completion of high school. Continued education helps mature men and women to improve themselves as producers, and to participate in our society as effective citizens and as persons. What our community needs is a number of people who will act as stimulators in a variety of learning areas. We need people to demonstrate that our everyday life can be filled with challenging and worthwhile learning experiences. We need leaders who will promote the fine arts, constructive recreational activities and learning experiences at all age levels. In all these activities the high school should be in a position to be helpful to individ- uals and groups. Our emphasis for the next decade should be quality, and not materialistic quantity. The program should be designed for adults as well as children. — C. R. Wolf The State and Federal governments are play- ing an increasingly important role in supporting present day educational .costs. Equalization has shifted more of the tax burden on the State gov- ernment. Federal government aid, through the National Defense Education Act, has also supple- mented school funds. The National Defense Education Act has sev- eral areas and is probably the least understood of our Federal Aids. Title III of this act covers the fields of Mathematics, Science, and Modern Foreign Language. Title V covers Guidance, Counselling, and Testing. Portions of the costs involved in these two titles are covered; but, in our situation, less than 50 per cent is reimbursed. These funds have been used to strengthen the various departments and to meet North Central College entrance requirements. However, the general property tax still re- mains the bulwark for school monies. Without the support of these taxpayers, most schools would be hard pressed to maintain a school sys- tem of any appreciable standards. — Ralph Lenz, Administrative Assistant During the past years, Berlin High 'School has expanded its curriculum to meet the needs of its students. Such courses as 4th year math, advanced biol- ogy, record keeping, speech, and advanced drafting have added richness to our offer- ings. A new science laboratory is being planned, thus enabling our school to ex- pand its science offerings. Since we are living in an electrical age, more work in electronics is being planned. In next year’s offerings, there is a new course called vocations, that has as its main objective, to better prepare our graduates for future job opportunities. As soon as facilities are available, art instruction is being planned. Each year our curriculum is reviewed with one thought in mind, to see that it serves the best interests of our students. Changes have been made, and will con- tinue to be made, to keep abreast of the changing times. — C. F. Shaw, Principal TEACHERS MR. RICHARD CROW Univ. ol Wisconsin. B.S.; Highland Univ., N. Mexico. Many long years ago when I was a poor green freshman, I thought the most wonderful thing in high school would be to be named valedictorian. I wished it would happen to me, but how often do dreams come true? Because this one has become reality, I owe many, many thanks to my teachers, counselors, and everyone who has helped me. To these, I say very gratefully, “thank you”. — Mary Gretchen Smazinski SALUTATORIAN Success as a student is a goal that could never be attained without the help and guidance of teachers, counselors and parents. Being saluta- torian is the highest honor I have ever achieved and I would like to extend my appreciation to all who guided me through these past four years. As I enter the University of Wisconsin next fall I shall look back on my high school years with memories of an experience which I shall always treasure. — Kris Luttropp SENIOR HONORS SCHOLASTIC JOHN WISNIEWSKI American Legion PATSEY PATTON NATHAN JORGENSEN Am. For me, there is no doubt as to the answer — my year as an American Field Service Student at Berlin High. Eleven months certainly is not a very long time, but it is one I'm never going to forget. I want to express my gratitude to the administration and staff of the school for helping to smooth my way and give me an enlightened view of American education, but most of all, I would like to say a big, big thank you to all the kids at Berlin High for a really memorable year. - HEATHER MACKIE HEATHER MACKIE SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS E. The Student Council, or the student government, is the representative body of all stu- dents at Berlin High School. Its members are elected by their respective classes. The Coun- cil arranges for many activities, such as buses for out-of-town games, money for Brotherhood Week and the Red Feather drive, the annual dance schedule,- and school elections. Each year the Council sets aside special activity days such as Clean-up, Dress-up, and School Spirit Days. For the second year the Council is sponsoring the foreign exchange student through the American Field Service Program. This is one of the latest and most successful accomplishments of the Council. Passing of the tomahawk. The Homecoming this year was one of the most successful Berlin has ever had. For the first time, there was bulletin board competition between classes. The seniors took high honors with “We’ve Got the Pep to Crush the Squirts”. Second place went to the sophomores, who had “Vic- tory’s On the Way”. The freshmen, with “We’ll Cage ’Em” placed third. “We’ll Choo-Choo-Chew ’Em Up” was the theme of the juniors, who took fourth place. Before the parade, Mr. and Miss Berlin and their court were presented to the students. John Wisniewski and Fran Blayney were our representatives for the 1963 Homecoming. Their court consisted of Bobbie Drover, Gayla Thrasher, Bonnie Thoma, Karen Kasuboski, Wally Coats, Jer- ry Buttke, Bob McGregor and Terry Thomas. The parade was one of the best ever, with each class and club having a float to represent it. Following that was a rousing pep rally, which stirred everyone’s enthusiasm for die big game. That night the Indians lived up to all predictions and ran away with 2 touchdowns. The score at the end of the game was Berlin 13, Mayville 0. The G.A.A. and the Boys’ “B” Club sponsored the dance, which was a perfect end to an ex- citing week. Mr. and Miss Berlin and their court were the royal guests of honor and danced through- out the night to the music of Len Umbreit and his band. We are sure that they and the rest of the student body will remember and cherish the 19631 Homecoming as being the most won- derful and exciting ever. Call the fire department! Third Place VICTORY! Patton The combined efforts of students from the four classes led to the production of the “Student Hootenanny” which was held in February, 1964. It was Berlin High’s second annual Talent Show. Both the production and direction of the Hootenanny were taken care of by two seniors, Fran Blayney — President of Band, and Bill LaBudd — President of Speech. Others who gave a helping hand in the show were: Lights—Dave Mendleski, Publicity—Connie Curran and Joy Holmes, Tickets —Nancy Leppin and Karen Kasuboski, and Programs—Bill LaBudd. The $400 proceeds from the show were used for scholarship funds. They were for the most ou tstanding seniors in the fields of Band and Speech. The proceeds from the show also went for installation of hanging microphones on the stage. It is hoped that in the future the Talent Show will be scheduled for two days instead of one. This year the gym was packed to the ceiling and it was thought to be one of the best shows ever pre- sented in the history of Berlin High School. SENIOR CLASS PLAY ROW 2 —J. Pence, M. It consisted of three acts which took place in the warden’s office of an old deserted prison. The tower of the prison was supposedly haunted by a man who was unjustly executed there. During the summer a professor’s family rented the prison because of the professor’s study of such places. Strange happenings occurred which were both hilarious and mysterious. The people of the cast and the three fine directors, Mr. Johnson, Miss Piechowski and Miss Scott did a fine job in presenting this play. p R O M QUEEN SHARON PISKEY KING JOE ROSS The 1964 Junior Prom was really a night to remember. With the gym decorated like a South Pacific island to carry out the theme, “Stranger in Paradise”, the couples danced to the soft music of the Modernaires. The ceiling and the beautiful murals were done in hues of pinks, purples, and blues. As the couples entered over a trellis bridge decked with flowers, they viewed the flamingos surrounded by floating water lilies in the pond. The evening was highlighted by the coronation of the Queen, Sharon Piskey, who was escorted by King Joe Ross. But the evening was not over, for the boys then escorted their dates to the Dawn Club to eat and dance to the music of Mary Jane and the Stingrays. The couples were truly “Strangers in Paradise, all lost in a wonder- land.” STRANGER IN PARADISE 'Two strangers entering This is paradise? going How's that again? The defensive line played well, especially Tom Hess. The Beavers held the score 7-0. The first conference game, which was with West Bend, was played on their home field. Early jitters plagued Berlin the whole first quarter, which caused the Indians to give two early touchdowns, but later on in the game the offensive line began to jell together. The Indians’ offensive team did a good job; deserving extra merit are Wally Coats, John Wisniewski, and Bob McGregor. Jerry Paul- sen led the defensive warriors against a rough team, coming home with a 20-13 loss. Glad to be back on their happy hunting grounds, Berlin met the Northern Half defending champs, Columbus. The Berlin Braves were probably more anxious for this game than the first three. Defen- sive effort was very good. Showing their war paint and doing a fine job were Jack Crimmings and Tom Jezwinski. Tom’s touchdown helped us gain a victory of 13 - 6. After being held to a 0 - 0 tie with Horicon, Berlin decided to move ahead. The best defensive execution of the year turned what was a very close ball game into a decisive win. Lloyd Peschke came out at second half with a barrage of touchdowns. The climax was the goal line stand at the last minute of the game, and the “Berlin Wall” held all. The score remained: Berlin 27, Horicon 0. A series of frustrating events during the game with Oconomowoc included one touchdown being nullified for illegal procedure, an intercepted pass which netted the Cooneys a touchdown, and a re- covery of a Cooney fumble out of the end zone which netted a safety for Berlin rather than the de- sired touchdown. Although Berlin was left with 2, and Oconomowoc 6, Berlin’s defense still dom- inated the ball game. In the most important game of the year, Homecoming, our Indians trounced the May ville Cardin als 14 - 0. This game provided a royal Homecoming for all the alumni who attended the game. The Berlin Indians got a slow start in the first half of the Waupun game, which meant a 13 - 0 lead for Waupun. Included in their score was a 70 yard double reverse pass. Coming back after half time, both teams played on equally tough terms, but the Warriors remained victorious. In the last game of the season our boys really went all out against Ripon for a squelching win of 38 - 0. The seniors played especially hard; for them this would be the last high school football game they would play. The teamwork was tremendous, ending the game with 4 T.D.’s. The football season closed with a record of 4 wins and 4 losses, putting the Indians in 3rd place, with the Best Defensive Team in the Little Ten northern half. Allowing only 45 points in seven coiiference games, 50 points all year and scoring 107 points on offense, our Indians did a swell job. John Wisniewski — Most Valuable Player, Leading Rusher. Next they met Horicon and again proved their worth with a final score of Berlin — 45, Horicon — 6. The J-V’s racked up another victory with a game against Wautoma. This game ended in a total score of 23 - 6. At mid-season they played their hardest game, which was with Mayville. It proved to be a heartbreaker and the turning point for the J-V’s. The final score was Mayville 8, Berlin 7. The team’s next opponent was Waupun, who proved to be stronger by winning 27 - 13. The final game was with Ripon, our traditional rival They were determined to overcome their opponent, but the “Tigers” fought hard to win 19 - 7. In the final team scoring Berlin came out on top. At -the end of the season the team scored a total of 113 points to their opponents’ 66 points. The Junior Varsity ended up with an average record of 3 wins and 3 losses. HOLD THAT LINE! ROW 4 —J. A CROSS COUNTRY Berlin started out their season by claiming second place in a quadrangular meet at Beaver Dam on September 6. After several meets, in which our runners scored very well, they cop- ped a first place at the triangular meet in Ripon, when they trounced the rival Tigers with a total score of 31. After a season of firsts and seconds they received a second at the Little Ten Conference meet in Ripon. They then went to the Sectionals, also held in Ripon. Here our Indians again stomped over all competitors and brought home a first. This qualified them to go to the State meet where they made a tremendous showing and brought home a good-sized trophy. The boys chose Jerry Kasuboski as captain for the team this year. The coach was Mr. Don Frank. Len Smoody did a good job of managing the squad. READY, SET, GO! B CROSS COUNTRY ROW 3 — T. Thoma, B. Berlin’s “B” squad started out their season by copying the “A” squad, receiving a second at the triangular meet held in Beaver Dam. However, they improved enough to tromp our neigh- boring rivals, the Ripon “Tigers”, in a Waupun meet, keeping the score down to 15- 49. Later, at the Little Ten Conference meet in Ripon, the “B” squad slowed down to get a 5th place, not high enough to qualify them to go on. ROW 2 — I. Johnson, B. McGregor, J. Wisniewski, B. A BASKETBALL The Berlin High School Varsity basketball season came to a close this year with six seniors hanging up their jerseys. These were Captain Wally Coats, Dave Griffith, Terry Thomas, John Wis- niewski, Tom Hess, and Bob McGregor. During the 1963-64 season Coach Parker’s “Braves” won seven conference games while losing seven, giving them a third place finish in Little Ten action. Their overall record was 11-8. One of the top games the Indians played this year was at Mayville. They scored 95 points, which tied the school record, as they easily swamped the Cardinals 95 - 62. In their last game of the Little Ten season, the Indians defeated the Oconomowoc “Coonies” in one of the hardest fought battles the home hardcourt has seen in years, by a score of 63 - 54. All-around good play and solid teamwork made the victory possible. The conference games over, the Indians entered the regional tournaments with high hopes. The first regional game was played at Beaver Dam on March 3, between Berlin and Ripon. In a sloppily played game the Indians beat the Tigers 62-54. This game marked the third time that the Indians had beaten the Tigers that season, a feat that hadn’t been accomplished for a few years. Three days later, in another fine effort, Berlin beat the Waupun Warriors 66 - 60. The following night in the final game of the Regional Tournament, the Indians were defeated by an excellent Wa- tertown team. The score of this game was 71-61. This ended the Varsity season in basketball. For the year, Lloyd Peschke was high scorer, scoring 302 points overall and 232 in conference. Gerry Gerth led all in rebounds as he grabbed a total of 227 second chances. Gerth also had the highest field goal percentage of the regulars (45%). Bill Beaman had the dubious honor of commit- ting the most fouls (54), but he also had the highest free throw percentage (67.4%). Wally Coats fed his mates the most, as he had 91 assists, while Dave Griffith was second or third in all departments. In the final player voting, Wally Coats was chosen Most Valuable Player and Bill Beaman Most Improved. For the 1963-64 season the manager was James Werch and the trainer Mike McMonigal. B BASKETBALL Although size was lacking this year, Mr. Luessman put together a fine team of very tal- ented players and they earned a 9 - 7 season record while finishing with a 7 - 7 log in confer- ence play. Everyone questioned the potential of this small team, and when the first game turned up a 55 - 37 loss to West Bend, many people lost confidence in them. But talent made up for size as the Junior Indians staged a war dance. The first to lose their scalps were the Waupun “War- riors” as the J.V.’s trounced them 48 - 42. Next in line for the month of December was Colum- bus and the “Cardinals” were defeated 49 - 30. During January there were losses to the likes of Beaver Dam and Ripon, but also vic- tories of 53 - 38 and 59 - 38 over Omro and W aupun, respectively. To close out a fine season the Indians took care of Oconomowoc by downing them 56 - 49. This successful season not only provided fans with a lot of excitement but also gave some of our young cagers valuable experience which will benefit the Varsity next year. DO LIKE THE NAVY DOES: SINK IT, SINK IT! FRESHMEN BASKETBALL ROW 2 — M. Handrich, T. Wall, R. Kerl, T. Jodarski, P. Dallas, R. Holdorf, M. Doll. ROW 1 — D. Randall, B. Jezwinski, G. Parsons, R. Mafhia. The freshmen basketball team unfortunately did not have as good a season as the Varsity, but their enthusiasm was at least equal to that of the “A” team. Tallying up a record to two wins and ten losses, the “Frosh” managed to put up some good defensive work. Mark Handrich was the most beneficial player, with a total scoring record of 109 points. Tom Wall was the sec- ond highest with 73 points. Against such competitors as Wautoma, Ripon, Winneconne, Omro, Mayville and Waupun, the boys played with excellent teamwork and good sportsmanship. The coach who urged them on even in their darkest hours was Mr. Polka, and they were managed by Keith Hess. Congratulations, boys, and better luck for a greater season next year on the J.V. squad. TRACK With many of the 1962 track stalwarts gone, it appeared as though Berlin would have a weak- er team in 1963. But our track coach, Mr. Doll, put together a fine team and gave us a very good showing in all of the meets. The Indians started out strong with a 67-51 victory over Oshkosh and an 85-32 win against Ripon. But ending the month of April, they ran up against a tough Beaver Dam squad in a dual meet and later in an invitational, to come in second and fourth, respectively On May 7, the thinclads came up with a third place showing at the Ripon Invitational Meet and were started on their way to the State meet as they followed up with sweeping 1st place victory in the sectional eliminations. As the season drew to a finish, the trackmen turned in a second place finish in the Little Ten meet with 62 Vz points (V2 point shy of May ville) and ended the season with a 7th place at the State track meet. A bright future is shining down on Berlin High as a freshmen-sophomore squad, which took first in the Little Ten Meet for that class, will be returning along with numerous talented vars- ity members to make the 1963 track squad one of the best ever in Berlin’s history. Jodarski, R. Mathia, J. Thalacker. Plagued by poor fielding and facing a heavy road schedule, our Indians fared reasonably well and attained a record of four wins and six losses. Despite the fine pitching of Dean Klauer and Terry Thomas, a lack of hitting along with the inept fielding kept the boys from having a bet- ter season than they could have. The team, coached by Mr. Parker, had four stalwart seniors batting for it. These boys, Dean Klauer, Gordon Thomas, Dan Miller and Dave Raymond, contributed much to the 1963 base- ball season. GOLF TEE FOR TWO ROW 2 — J. Ceman, P. Dallas, M. McMonigal, D. Burling, D. Umbreit, R. Chikowski, T. Malnory. ROW 1 — J. Schnieder, D. Randall, P. Hetmansperger, S. Mishlove, M. Clark, J. Thalacker, L Hoffman. Placing in everything but a first this year, the golf team, under the coaching of Mr. Polka, had a fairly good year. Jim Jensen, Mike McMonigal, John DeNamur, Don Burling and Don Rilling, who were the most consistent team performers, helped the team to place ninth at the sectionals at Elkhart Lake. The various teams competing there were Horicon, Mayville, Ripon, Waupun and Columbus. VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Marilyn McBriar, Gavla Thrasher, Nancy Leppin, Sandi Kuklinski, Karen Kasuboski. Our theme of school spirit would not be complete without giving recognition to the varsity cheerleaders. These girls devoted much of their time to encourag- ing and leading the student body at all our sports activities and pep rallies. Be- sides urging our boys on to new records and great victories, the cheerleaders al- so put up posters and signs to encourage student participation. The girls elected Nancy Leppin as their captain for the ’63-’64 season. Nancie Ehrlich, the sub- stitute, took the part of our Indian mascot. Mrs. Guenther is the advisor. NANCIE EHRLICH J.V. CHEERLEADERS Sue Sherman, Nancy Miller, Noel Czinsky, Marie Beaman, Judy Gluth. Our J.V. teams were encouraged on to great victories by their faithful cheer- leaders. The girls did a fine job in helping the varsity cheerleaders lead the stu- dents in cheers. The “B” cheerleaders worked on several new routines and cheers. The captain was Noel Czinsky. WRESTLING CHEERLEADERS JoAnn Krause, Judy Cismoski, Joy Holmes. The wrestling team sure didn’t need any encouragement this year, but our wrestling cheerleaders did a great job in encouraging the students. The captain was Joy Holmes.
