SCHOOL BOARD Erwin Ehrlich, Director Harold Spangler, Clerk Richard Barry Harold Gatzke Gordon James Glenn Michaels Charles Miller, Treasurer Wilfred Handrich Howard Barnes BERLIN BOARD OF EDUCATION The Board of Education has been working on gigantic projects in the past year. They have supervised the construction of two elementary schools in the district. They are the new junior high school in the city of Berlin and the Poy Sippi elementary school in Poy Sippi. The Poy Sippi school is already open and the Clay Lamberton school will open for the first time in the Fall of 1963. The junior high has been named for Mr. Clay Lamberton, a former superintendent of Berlin High School and well known state educator. Berlin also has taken in many new districts this year. Several “country schools” have been closed and the children attending these schools have been sent to the city schools. Special recognition for 20 years of service is given to Gordon James, who has served the Berlin school system from 1942 to the present time. He served as president of the board from 1952 through 1958, and since that time has devoted most of his efforts as chairman of the personnel committee.

EDITORS Mary McAvoy — Cathie Spangler We, the editors of the 1963 Mascoutin, in order to form a more enjoyable yearbook, estab- lish staff teamwork, insure errorless statistics, provide for better unity among students, promote the complete circulation of the yearbook, and secure a clear reference for the students and the community, do insure the accuracy of the yearbook and hope you find it a well-molded source of the many events of the past year. This year has been the busiest thus far in the history of Berlin’s school system. Great changes have taken place. A new junior high school is under construction. It is to be named for a former Superin- tendent of Berlin High School, Mr. Clay Lamberton. A new grade school in Poy Sippi has also been constructed, and a foreign language laboratory was added in the high school. Having a foreign exchange student has been a pleasant addition to the entire community. Clemente Morales has been sponsored by the American Field Service and local civic organiza- tions, the Berlin High Student Council played a very important part in the success of the ex- change student. The hope to continue this practice in future years with the same amount of success is very high. The yearbook has also undergone a major change. The Senior Activities can be found in the back of the book in order to provide for more continuity in specific areas of information. The book is a true expression of the students interests in activities. It is an accumulation of facts accompanied by photos, to help tell the story of the working bodies within the high school. — Cathie Spangler — Mary McAvoy

FIRST SCHOOL SECOND SCHOOL PRESENT SCHOOL WASHINGTON SCHOOL MARKET SQUARE LINCOLN SCHOOL BERLIN SCHOOL HISTORY This year the Sophomore Class is the 100 years class. The first Berlin High School was erected in 1863, and today in 1963, the Berlin School System is still expanding to meet the ever growing needs of this community. The Berlin School District consists of 25 schools, which have consoli- dated to make the 200-square mile Berlin district. Besides Washington School and Lincoln Grade Schools and the high school in the city, the district operates three special rooms in rented quarters. Other outlying schools are in Poy Sippi, Aurora ville, Rural Heights, and Fountain Valley. Under the extensive building program, the Berlin School System is now in the process of completing the new Clay Lamberton Junior High School, on the northeast end of the city, in time for the 1963-64 school year. The new elementary grade school in Poy Sippi is now in operation.
