Mascoutin Volume Forty-Six Berlin High Berlin, Wisconsin IN MEMORIAM Ruth Brewer When a person is young, death seems to be the farthest thing away. Children play together and plan for the future years. When they reach high school, there are many changes — of the personality, and of future plans. Outlooks on life are broadened and the world’s problems become more intense. Still, the idea of death of a classmate is never thought of. If it should happen, as it has, the reactions are varied. Everyone realizes the great loss, and realizes better the complicated ways of God. Although Ruth Amy Brewer has left us, we know that she will be with us in spirit as we don our caps and gowns at graduation. We will always remember Ruth for her love of nature and her unfailing courage. — The Class of 1963 EDITORS Mary McAvoy — Cathie Spangler We, the editors of the 1963 Mascoutin, in order to form a more enjoyable yearbook, estab- lish staff teamwork, insure errorless statistics, provide for better unity among students, promote the complete circulation of the yearbook, and secure a clear reference for the students and the community, do insure the accuracy of the yearbook and hope you find it a well-molded source of the many events of the past year. This year has been the busiest thus far in the history of Berlin’s school system. Great changes have taken place. A new junior high school is under construction. It is to be named for a former Superin- tendent of Berlin High School, Mr. Clay Lamberton. A new grade school in Poy Sippi has also been constructed, and a foreign language laboratory was added in the high school. Having a foreign exchange student has been a pleasant addition to the entire community. Clemente Morales has been sponsored by the American Field Service and local civic organiza- tions, the Berlin High Student Council played a very important part in the success of the ex- change student. The hope to continue this practice in future years with the same amount of success is very high. The yearbook has also undergone a major change. The Senior Activities can be found in the back of the book in order to provide for more continuity in specific areas of information. The book is a true expression of the students interests in activities. It is an accumulation of facts accompanied by photos, to help tell the story of the working bodies within the high school. — Cathie Spangler — Mary McAvoy SCHOOL BOARD Erwin Ehrlich, Director Harold Spangler, Clerk Richard Barry Harold Gatzke Gordon James Glenn Michaels Charles Miller, Treasurer Wilfred Handrich Howard Barnes BERLIN BOARD OF EDUCATION The Board of Education has been working on gigantic projects in the past year. They have supervised the construction of two elementary schools in the district. They are the new junior high school in the city of Berlin and the Poy Sippi elementary school in Poy Sippi. The Poy Sippi school is already open and the Clay Lamberton school will open for the first time in the Fall of 1963. The junior high has been named for Mr. Clay Lamberton, a former superintendent of Berlin High School and well known state educator. Berlin also has taken in many new districts this year. Several “country schools” have been closed and the children attending these schools have been sent to the city schools. Special recognition for 20 years of service is given to Gordon James, who has served the Berlin school system from 1942 to the present time. He served as president of the board from 1952 through 1958, and since that time has devoted most of his efforts as chairman of the personnel committee. FIRST SCHOOL SECOND SCHOOL PRESENT SCHOOL WASHINGTON SCHOOL MARKET SQUARE LINCOLN SCHOOL BERLIN SCHOOL HISTORY This year the Sophomore Class is the 100 years class. The first Berlin High School was erected in 1863, and today in 1963, the Berlin School System is still expanding to meet the ever growing needs of this community. The Berlin School District consists of 25 schools, which have consoli- dated to make the 200-square mile Berlin district. Besides Washington School and Lincoln Grade Schools and the high school in the city, the district operates three special rooms in rented quarters. Other outlying schools are in Poy Sippi, Aurora ville, Rural Heights, and Fountain Valley. Under the extensive building program, the Berlin School System is now in the process of completing the new Clay Lamberton Junior High School, on the northeast end of the city, in time for the 1963-64 school year. The new elementary grade school in Poy Sippi is now in operation. SUPERINTENDENT With a look toward the future, the school buildings and equipment in a community reflect the ambitions, the hopes and the dreams of its people. When school facilities are inadequate, overcrowded and poorly equipped, then the future welfare of the future citizens of the com- munity is in jeopardy. The consolidation of small one-room schools in our district in the past ten years has placed a strain on our remaining schools. This has made it necessary to provide additional classrooms for present and future needs. In addition, shops, science and language laboratories, libraries, a counselling department, gymnasiums, cafeterias and facilities for fine arts have been provided. We are all concerned with raising the standards of living, elevating the culture of our people, providing more job opportunities. Our schools can play an important part in the achievement of these objectives. Whenever school buildings are built, every effort should be made to design them to fit the type of educational program that will be conducted. School administrators and staff members are constantly evaluating the changing educational needs and school services. The past ten years have been marked by great changes in our country. The full power of the atom is being real- ized, jet travel is becoming common place, satellites are orbiting the earth and going to distant planets. The earth’s people are living in closer proximity to each other. The wave of scientific discovery and the upward surge of the people of the earth will pro- duce even greater changes in the years ahead. All of these developments have had a great impact on the educational program of the schools. Somehow, classrooms and up to date teach- ing equipment must be provided, so that our children can find their place in this new era. — C. R. Wolf PRINCIPAL Every modern high school has to continually ask itself if its curric- ulum is keeping abreast of modern times. Up to World War II or the early 1940’s there were but few changes made in curriculum offerings during the last 100 years. During the 1940’s and 1950’s science and mathe- matics made a tremendous break- through in understanding man’s po- tentials. As a result, it is estimated that man’s source of knowledge has doubled during the last 20 years and will again double during the next 10 years. This means that Berlin High School will need to evaluate its cur- riculum yearly to keep abreast of the time. Course content must be studied, discarding that not applicable, and introducing that which is meaningful to our hopes and ambitions. C. F. Shaw, Principal Mr. Shaw Mr. Lenz By what yardstick do you measure the cost of education? Statistics have shown that the more education a student completes, the more he or she can expect in a monetary way during their lifetime. Yet, the costs for this education have gone up over the years while the value of the dollar has decreased. There- fore, it takes more of these dollars to meet these costs. Each community has to answer in its own terms just what number of these dollars they wish to pay for education. Berlin has always tried to keep these values in a reasonable relationship, while still providing for the best educational program possible. A long time ago Aristotle stated it this way: “All who have meditated on the art of govern- ing mankind have been convinced that the fate of empires depends on the education of youth.” — Ralph Lenz, Administrative Assistant TEACHERS 3 BT33g- - - HgS MR. It means being able to participate fully in the extra-curricular activities while still maintaining high scholastic grades. The purpose of Badger State is to promote an interest in and the understanding of the principles of democratic government; to provide students with a practical program of training in citizenship; to present to the students the duties, privileges and responsibilities of citizenship through active participation in the operation of government. The program, lasting approximately 7 days, is based on a study of state, county and mu- nicipal systems of government, including the function of political parties. One of the most important contributions of the Council this year has been the initiation of the American Field Service foreign student plan. STUDENT COUNCIL MEMBERS ROW 1 - C. Spangler, B. Many more students participated, making the affair even more worthwhile. Also, the time and expense of the floats was limited, demanding that a little extra mental effort be made to produce a winning float. Competition was very strong among the classes. The parade was the best ever. The many floats, bands and convertibles were paraded for the public to see and enjoy. Afterward the pep rally was held on the football field as a final preparation for the game. The G.A.A. and Boy’s “B” Club sponsored the dance which was a perfect end to a perfect day. Although we lost the game, all the par- ticipants will remember and cherish all the wonderful events that took place during our 1962 Homecoming. — Susan Franzen, Miss Berlin — Ralph Treder, Mr. Berlin Fun! Enthusiasm! Excitement! Suspense! These are only a few of the qualities that were present at the 1962 Homecoming. The students, faculty and entire town shared these feelings and together worked to make Homecoming more successful and unique than ever before. JUNIOR PROM James Marshall — King Roberta Drover — Queen “Over the Rainbow” was the theme carried out by the Junior Class this year. The colors of the rainbow spec- trum and the music of the Riponaires added to the fantasy. After entering under a flower-decked trellis, the couples met a garden scene which surpassed their fondest dreams. With tiny umbrellas set in angel hair as table centerpieces, a castle and mountains in the distance lent a fairy-tale atmosphere to the gym. The juniors, and everyone else, will always remember this night, “Over the Rainbow”. PROM COURT . . . The Berlin High School Chorus, under the direction of Mrs. Helen Goodrich, did an out- standing job in both school appearances and at the annual Tournament for bands and choirs. The Chorus placed at Fond du Lac, where the Tournament was held—a commendable job. We had representatives at state, those musicians who placed first in the Class A group at the dis- trict gathering. The Chorus is an excellent group to watch, and the local audiences enjoyed immensely the Spring and Winter Concerts. MADRIGAL ROW 1 — L. Umbreit, S. Raymond, P. Patton, S. Schiavone, B. Voeltner, D. Football season 1962 started out under the direction of head coach James Luessman, ably assisted by line coach George Doll. The team lost its first game to Beaver Dam but bounded back the next week and “labeled” Ripon. With this win under their belts it ap- peared that the Indians would get the necesssary impetus to go all the way. But Lady Luck didn’t smile on the Indians again until the last game of the season against Mayville. This was a young team and what the boys lacked in talent they made up for in drive and desire. Next year’s squad should be a dandy if they begin where they left off this year. Co-captains for this year’s squad were “Biff” Fuhremann and Dave Raymond. The team elected as their most valuable player John Wisniewski and most improved player was Dennis Burling. At the state meet they lost their coveted first place by one point. But they brought home a handsome second place trophy and won the acclaim of the entire student body. The track team of 1962 was one of the most outstanding that Berlin High School has ever had. The most exceptional part of the year was the fact that the boys won more trophies than in any other year. They won 1st place in the Little Ten Northern Division and also won the sectionals. Although we placed only 7th in the state meet, Ralph Treder was state champion miler in class B. He also set the school record of 4:38.5. 1962 TRACK SCHEDULE Wednesday, April 1 1 .......... Freshman and Sophomore Invitational at Beaver Dam Tuesday, April 17 ............. The combined efforts of students from the four classes led to the production of Berlin High’s first Talent Show. Both the production and the direction of the show were executed by two senior girls, Kevin Devere and Cathy Spangler. Organizing tryouts and rehearsals, they selected their stage crew and assistants, consisting of Bill LaBudd, Mary Nelson and Paula Schedler. Performers were from all classes. Freshmen presented a lively comedy routine. Sopho- mores, juniors and seniors took part in the Madrigal’s selection of the Music Man.
