SUPERINTENDENT An individual’s greatest right is to be himself — to be a person in his own right. The American ideal guarantees this right. Our institutions, including the school, exist to serve this purpose. The school believes that every child should learn to make choices. This cannot be learned by memorizing a group of facts. School experiences should be designed to teach reasoning, to discriminate and to appreciate. The real education gained will be the quality of convictions and values acquired. The individual must learn that a certain amount of conformity is necessary in our society. Complete submergance of the individual’s need is, however, not in the best interests of a nation’s future. If this American ideal is to be fostered and accepted in the world, then we must make certain that our schools and society will protect acceptable individual rights and behavior. It is the goal of the school that every pupil will be able to develop his potentialities within the group and not be lost in it. Every individual should feel a responsibility to contribute to the group rather than withdraw from it. Skilled manpower for the critical years ahead will require individuals who can think for themselves, have sufficient maturity to react intelligently to a problem, and possess a sense of responsibility toward the welfare of others. — C. R. Wolf

PRINCIPAL Parents and students alike are beginning to realize that a sound guidance program is a necessity for a modern school. Berlin High School is fortunate to have qualified counselors working in this field. Work in guidance and counseling cuts across every phase of school life. The interpretation of the curriculum, extra curricular activities, moral values, vocational ambitions, development of maturity are a part of the work in guidance. The school guidance program should take up where the home leaves off. When the home fails in this area, the school needs to take over, and try to help the student through his critical teen-age years, to appreciate not only his own standing, but to appreciate his God, community, school, state and country. If we can be of some help in these areas we feel our time is well spent. Both the State Department of Education and the North Central Accrediting Agency places guidance as an important function of the school. It is here to stay and to be improved upon from year to year. — C. F. Shaw
