Mascoutin Volume Forty-Four Berlin Fligli Berlin, Wisconsin SCHOOL BOARD Ervin Ehrlich, Director Harold Gatzke Peter Oberhauser Howard Barnes, Clerk Wilfred Handrich Glenn Michaels Charles Miller, Treas. Gordon James ■ Harold Spangler TABLE OF CONTENTS Faculty and Classes Society Clubs Sports IN MEMORIAM DEDICATION “But in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate. we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, jar above our poor power to add or to detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never jorget what they did here. Abraham Lincoln — Gettysburg Address — November 19, 1863 And we DO remember Mr. Lincoln. On this 100th anniversary of the Civil War, we re-dedicate ourselves to your precepts of: malice toward none, charity for all, firm- ness in the right, as God gives us to see the right ; hoping, as you hoped, for brother- hood for every race, color and creed, and a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations SUPERINTENDENT An individual’s greatest right is to be himself — to be a person in his own right. The American ideal guarantees this right. Our institutions, including the school, exist to serve this purpose. The school believes that every child should learn to make choices. This cannot be learned by memorizing a group of facts. School experiences should be designed to teach reasoning, to discriminate and to appreciate. The real education gained will be the quality of convictions and values acquired. The individual must learn that a certain amount of conformity is necessary in our society. Complete submergance of the individual’s need is, however, not in the best interests of a nation’s future. If this American ideal is to be fostered and accepted in the world, then we must make certain that our schools and society will protect acceptable individual rights and behavior. It is the goal of the school that every pupil will be able to develop his potentialities within the group and not be lost in it. Every individual should feel a responsibility to contribute to the group rather than withdraw from it. Skilled manpower for the critical years ahead will require individuals who can think for themselves, have sufficient maturity to react intelligently to a problem, and possess a sense of responsibility toward the welfare of others. — C. R. Wolf PRINCIPAL Parents and students alike are beginning to realize that a sound guidance program is a necessity for a modern school. Berlin High School is fortunate to have qualified counselors working in this field. Work in guidance and counseling cuts across every phase of school life. The interpretation of the curriculum, extra curricular activities, moral values, vocational ambitions, development of maturity are a part of the work in guidance. The school guidance program should take up where the home leaves off. When the home fails in this area, the school needs to take over, and try to help the student through his critical teen-age years, to appreciate not only his own standing, but to appreciate his God, community, school, state and country. If we can be of some help in these areas we feel our time is well spent. Both the State Department of Education and the North Central Accrediting Agency places guidance as an important function of the school. It is here to stay and to be improved upon from year to year. — C. F. Shaw TEACHERS MR. L. A. BLACKBOURN Wis. State College, Institute of Technology, Platteville; B.S. Zimdars, Jerry — School is what you make it; it makes me tired”. From Youth As clay in the hands of an artist, We shape our lives day by day; They're to be molded with sorrow or laughter. We can do with them what we may. The tomorrow's look gloomy and clouded Friends gone, and battles to win; Today's youth will be needed tomorrow, For tomorrow's youth will be men. So farewell to unhampered childhood, The clay's first shaping is done; Future's uncertain finger is beckoning, And the final molding's begun. — Mrs. M. L. They schedule buses for out-of-town games, provide refreshments for the players after the home games and also pop popcorn to sell at home games. As usual the student council promotes Dress-up Day, and this year they added School Clean-up Day and School Spirit Day. The Council also sponsors the Community Chest drive for the high school students and its members put on dances and help improve school standards. This year the Student Council was the host to Little Ten Student Council at their two annual meetings. STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS Standing: B. Mlodzik, Mr. Crow, L. Hauman Seated: S. Petruschke, K. Madison H O M E C was the practice in previous years. The sun instead of the moon brought out the glittering floats and signs which made up the exuberant parade. The excitement of the students was heightened further by a pep meeting following the parade. The activ- EVENTS ities pushed the football team to such strength that Horicon, the opponent, was sent to the marsh de- feated. Following the victorious game was the Home- coming Dance sponsored by the Girls’ Athletic As- sociation and the Boys’ “B” Club. The gym was decorated in accordance with the theme, ‘'Harvest Moon”. The Don Simon orchestra topped off a wonderful and successful Homecoming. JUNIOR PROM KING JOE GREENING QUEEN MARY MENDLESKI With lovely decorations of paper carnations and sweet peas, street lights and a fountain, the Junior class transformed the gym into a Paris park scene. The couples danced under a beautiful ceiling of blended red, pink and deep red crepe paper, to the theme music of “Paris in the Springtime” provided by Les Palmer and his orchestra. To top a perfect evening the prom-goers went to the Dawn Club to eat and dance to the music of Bob Mattice and his orchestra. Zietlow, A. Grota, I). Stabler, J. Hoffman, K. Parsons, S. Lapene, C. Jorgensen, D. Young, A. Peck, M. Lip in ski, G. Lehman ORCHIDS TO YOU, THESPIANS! The Seniors of B.H.S. deserve hearty congratulations for the fine job they did April 13 when they presented a three-act comedy entitled, “Lock, Stock and Lipstick”, by John Henderson. The play featured a conservative, confirmed bachelor, Mr. Warren, in the role of a high school guidance counselor played by Don Stabler. Trouble begins when a young, pretty girl counselor is hired. When no other living quarters are available in the city, the young counselor turns the formal high school office into a feminine boudoir. Anne Grota portrays the delightful counselor, Miss Jane Gardner. Jerry Lehman and Doris Young played two problem students, Carol Izzard and Larry Donley. The attractive counselor has an opportunity to help these students when one of them is falsely accused of stealing $500 of yearbook money. Kathy Parsons portrayed Larry’s haughty mother, Mrs. Donley. She attempt- ed to use her “influence” to keep her son from being suspended. A lot of action centered on the janitor and cleaning woman, Plunkett and Mrs. Maggs, played by Alfred Peck and Shirley Lapene, between whom romance blossomed. Marcella Lipinski and Charles Jorgensen played the parts of two typical and well-liked students, Mary Lou Brennan and Don Donley. Faye Zietlow offered the background music of Miss Entwhistle, the school principal. Joan Hoffman played the riotous part of Miss Prather, the geometry teacher. The masculine counselor showed he had “heart” when he decided to anony- mously finance a brain operation for Mary Lou after she became severely ill. As one may guess the confirmed bachelor soon said “I do!” The young counselor, Anne, responded with a similar phrase, the money was found and everyone was happy. They learn how to conduct themselves in a business-like manner by selling football and basket- ball schedule pencils to the other students. They also sell candy at the basketball games which adds to their experience. The proceeds from these projects are used to finance a field trip to some large business establishment at the end of the year. This is so that the students may observe business pracices first hand and it also shows them what will be expected of them in the business world. PROTECTORS OF THE LAND F.F.A. CHAPTER FARMERS R. 4—R. By working with the Conservation Wardens and the State Conservation De- partment, the club does much to promote conservation and the propagation of wild life. They place feeders for the pheasants during winter in the trees of the low land to attract Wood Ducks and other wild fowl. Each year a group attends the “Trees for Tomorrow” camp which is sup- ported by service clubs in Berlin. The club also owns its own trap shoot. Safety and good sportsmanship is stressed. This club is very helpful for boys who are planning to continue in this field. W A C S GIRLS' LEAGUE R. 3—J. Jorgensen, L. Bombinski, J. Thomas, D. Radtke, Mrs. Zietlow R. 2—A. Grota, K. Zink, B. EDITORS The increasing number of students in the Berlin area has presented the need for a Junior High School. Plans for this building are now being made and the completion of it is expected in a few years. The addition of journalism and speech to the high school curriculum has been a success. We hope that in future years they will become a permanent fixture. We have made many changes in this year’s Mascoutin. both adding and subtracting things, such as the honor roll, class officers, the “Big 4” Dances, the Student Council, Senior Farewell, the Calendar. It has been a great pleasure and honor for us to produce this year’s 1961 Mascoutin. We would like to give special thanks to Mr. Zuelke and Mr. Wahlers, our advisors, and members of the staff and department heads for helping us so generously. This is your book of memories — memories old, memories new, memories sentimental, memories true. We hope you will keep it — and treasure it, always.
