She is currently the supervisor at Lincoln and Washington schools in Berlin. Miss Williams has been a life-long resident of Berlin. She received her grade school and high school education here. She attended kindergarten and first three grade in what was known as the Primary School . She attended fourth grade in the First High School. which later burned, and she attended the fifth grade in the east wing of the former Park Hotel. The Second High School was built and here she attended school during her sixth, seventh and eighth grade years. She was grad- uated from Berlin High School in 1909, Miss Williams is a two-year graduate of Oshkosh Normal and after several years of teaching she went on to the University. She has a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin. During various summers. she has attended summer sessions at Northwestern University and Columbia Uni- versity. She is a member of local. state and national teachers organizations and has the distinction of having been elected to membership in two National honorary educational organizations, namely Delta Kappa Gamma and Pi Lambda Theta. Miss Williams has had forty-five years of teaching experience in elementary education and has taught in seventeen summer sessions. She has taught in four different cities during her career-Sheboygan, Berlin, Madison and Whitewater. In Berlin, Miss Williams taught at the West Side school, Lincoln school. and Green Lake County Normal. She was Director of Elementary Education at Whitewater State Teachers College for seventeen years. Leaving Whitewater. she returned to Berlin to teach and is now supervisor of our elementary schools. This year Miss Williams will celebrate her 50th year as a member of the Berlin High School Alumni Association. Miss Williams has also found time to do an extensive amount of traveling. She has visited many parts of the United States. Canada. and spent one summer touring the British Isles. Through the years Miss Williams has often recalled the following lines from her early training: 'To be a school lrveper requires only the ability to sit at a desk in the classroom and call classes. To be a school Mfucher requires learning, energy, enthusiasm. pa- tience, love of your work, and love and understanding of growing youth. Editors EDITORIAL One of the most important facets of a good education is a capable teacher. Berlin High has gained recognition in the past years for its outstanding Science and Mathematics teachers. Mr. Crow this year received a citation as the outstanding Wisconsin Science teacher. For the past three years he has been attending a Summer School in New Mexico under a scholarship from the National Science Foundation. In the past he has studied Chemistry and Biology and this year plans to study Physics. Mr. Doll is studying Biology at the University of Wisconsin under a one year scholarship from the National Science Foundation. He is planning to return to Berlin High this Fall. Mr. Clunn will be in Kansas this Summer studying Mathematics ami also plans to spend the approaching term at the University of Wisconsin. thanks again to the National Science Foundation. Mr. Wolff will be attending the Case Institute in Cleveland. Ohio this Summer to study Mathematics. Miss Madeline Carey deserves special recognition for her service at Washing- ton School for many years. She is now on a leave of absence and we hope she will retum soon. The students of lierlin High also owe their thanks to our staff of cooks who do such a fine job of preparing our noon lunch. Mrs. Kolb, who has been with the school for many years, heads the staff. Thanks Mrs. Kolbl Thanks also to Dan Werch who retired this year after serving our school for many years as janitor. Recognition goes to our students as well as our staff and faculty. Judy Guenther was a candidate for Little Ten Wrestling Queen, Mary Schilder was a candidate to the Ripon invitational Track meet, and Judy Sutherland was a Little Ten Track Queen candidate this year. Miss Sutherland. in addition. received a Winnebago Homemakers Scholarship. Nelma lirey also received the Waushara County Home- makers Award. Une thing this Spring that has never been done at lierlin Hiffh School was the D trip some of the students took to Washington. D.C.. New York and Niagara Falls. This year we have added something new to the Mascoutin. a calendzjr. Many memorable events that have occurred this year can be remembered by looking at it. Diana Walker and Mary Datta. At the annual school meeting in ,luly 1958 the present hoard of nine members was Created. This replaced a hoard of l8 members that was representative of the old city-integrated system. Under the city-integrated system the following schools were previously added: Rosebud. Warren Center. Edgemore. Joint District No. l Qlliverside. Lilac Hilli, Koro, Big Island tljond Lily, Fox liiverl. French. Fargoville, Spoor and Woodlawn. The following districts have heen added this year: East lsland. Shead Street. Hoeft, Record, Auroraville, Meadow llrook and parts of the Towns of Warren and Leon. Our school now serves an urea ol' approximately 200 square miles. Our national security seems daily to hang in the balance, population shifting and unrest is very evidentg automation and a constantly changing pattern of living is destroying jobs and creating others. Never has it been so apparent that our future progress and security. as individuals and as a nation. is greatly dependent on the quantity and quality of the educational opportunities that we provide for our young people. The present role of the school is almost awesome when we consider the urgency of our educational needs. Coupled with increased needs are the sharply rising costs of operating schools. lf we. in our community, want to provide good educational opportunities for our young people it will be :necessary to make intelligent decisions based on facts and not on emotions. The trend toward school consolidation is nation-wide. The Conant Study clearly shows that small educational units cannot provide the quality of training needed by our young people. A truly comprehensive program is only possible if the high school has a graduating class of at least one hundred. Classes in advanced subjects or separate sections based on ability are impossible in a smaller high school. lt is our sincere hope that our integration program will soon be completed. We will then be in a position to improve the educational program of all the children in our district. The high school of the future will be judged by the service it will render to all the people. These limitations for service will be determined by the understanding and desires of the people of our community. We hope to give every student an equal opportunity. This can only be done by ssholehearted cooperation on this urgent problem of educating all our Children' C. R. Wcilf, Superintendent N 0 77 Dnector T.--,-i-,M,,,s N- --M M -..A s X . ...Q The high school of today. if it is to keep ahreasl of the times, has to steer its thinking to the fast moving world that our graduates are now facing. Surely the high school can never train students to he first rate technicians. so the function of the high school is to lay a solid groundwork for our young people to build on. What it can do and should he doing is finding out the potential of every student. Then try to put each student in an environment that will develop his or her abilities to the utmost. One cannot build unless the fundamentals of math and reading are mastered. This solid information has to he placed in its proper prespective hy a solid background in our social studies classes. The program of our comprehensive high school is a never ending challenge that needs to he re-evaluated yearly, in order to make possihle the hest education for our youth. C. F. Nlurtiu 1959 WRESTLING SCHEDULE Berlin's wrestling team did comparatively well this year considering that Berlin had only two previ- ous years in which to build a wrestling team. Every year it has drawn bigger crowds and this year was no exception as cheering crowds gathered at home meets to cheer their favorite wrestlers to a hoped-for victory. High School wrestling is quite different from professional wrestling in that all pressure holds are illegal. High School wrestling is very scientific and requires a great deal of skill as well as strength. Any illegal holds are penalized by awarding points to the opponent. Berlin finished fifth in the Little Ten and took third place in the sectional tournament. Three boys. Jerry Johnson. Tom Jones and Gerry Lehman represented Berlin at the state meet in '7 Madison. .Vume of Tearn Score Name of Opposing Team Score Dale of Meet iitfrlill -------.,---.-,--- 25 Ripon .................................. ..... 1 9 November 25, 1958 Berlin .,.,, .
