Editorial Co-operation and the spirit of working together is one of the many things learned at Berlin High School. One of the ways in which this is accomplished is through our athletic programs. Physical education classes as well as the Girls Ath- letic Association for girls and after school sports for boys teach the fundamentals of sportsmanship to Berlin High students and provide after school entertainment for them. Our athletic teams have many accomplishments that they have earned in the past fifteen years. The basketball team of 1944-1945 went to the state tournament at Madison. In 1956 the team won the sectional tournament here. Our football teams have been Little Ten Conference champions or co-champions five times since 1946. Also, w'e won the baseball conference title in 1954. These are some of the athletic highlights of Berlin High School. We do not concentrate solely on athletics, however; speech, music, and various club work is offered the students. Scholastic achievement is, of course, stressed most highly. There are many students and teachers at Berlin High that deserve recognition for the work they are doing and have done along the scholastic line. It w'ould he impossible to give all who deserve it credit here. Several of our teachers have or are working for their master’s degrees, many of them on scholarships. It should also be noted here that on March 13, 1958, our school system was changed from a city district to a common school district. This type of school or- ganization will tend to bring the school closer to the people and will facilitate the improvement of our area education program. We hope that this yearbook has shown you that extra-curricular programs are important secondary functions of our schools and that these programs make it possible that each student can develop to his fullest capacity. Dedication” Tliis yearbook is dedicated to all those people who believe, as we do, that athletic programs are an important function of America’s schools. Through school athletic programs the student learns much more about what is necessary for a full life than how to hit a home run or punt fifty yards. He learns the basic principles on which our country is run — co-operation. Physical education classes teach this to all high school students. In addition, the Girls Athletic Association and co-curricular sports for boys further develops the student if he has the time to belong to these organizations. Totalitarian governments emphasize not the worth of the individual hut the glorification of the state. They do not value the outcome to the individual, such as physical fitness and body co-ordination. In a democracy the worth of the indi- vidual is stressed rather than this glorification of state. Citizenship classes stress the need for co-operation to preserve democracy. What better way is there to teach a student this feeling of unity than through ath- letics? Through learning together and striving for a common goal—to win — it is only natural that these students keep striving for a common goal in their daily lives — to win in life by co-operation. Even though athletic programs are important for the development of America’s students, it must be remembered that the primary function of our schools must be to develop a well-rounded person that will be prepared to meet life when he grad- uates. Scholastic achievement in the classroom must still remain of topmost im- portance in our schools. It must not be overlooked that athletics are needed to develop and condition our bodies in this age of easy living. Modern conveniences in the home and trans- portation facilities certainly give us us no chance to develop ourselves physically. This could be dangerous, for we see in history of the many times powerful nations have fallen because of the laziness of their people. Athletic programs are necessary, then, to keep us working together as a team of Americans and to keep us physically strong and ready to defend our country. The Mascoutin for 1958 seeks to show its appreciation and recognition to those who have inaugurated and taken part in our athletic programs.
