Dedication” Tliis yearbook is dedicated to all those people who believe, as we do, that athletic programs are an important function of America’s schools. Through school athletic programs the student learns much more about what is necessary for a full life than how to hit a home run or punt fifty yards. He learns the basic principles on which our country is run — co-operation. Physical education classes teach this to all high school students. In addition, the Girls Athletic Association and co-curricular sports for boys further develops the student if he has the time to belong to these organizations. Totalitarian governments emphasize not the worth of the individual hut the glorification of the state. They do not value the outcome to the individual, such as physical fitness and body co-ordination. In a democracy the worth of the indi- vidual is stressed rather than this glorification of state. Citizenship classes stress the need for co-operation to preserve democracy. What better way is there to teach a student this feeling of unity than through ath- letics? Through learning together and striving for a common goal—to win — it is only natural that these students keep striving for a common goal in their daily lives — to win in life by co-operation. Even though athletic programs are important for the development of America’s students, it must be remembered that the primary function of our schools must be to develop a well-rounded person that will be prepared to meet life when he grad- uates. Scholastic achievement in the classroom must still remain of topmost im- portance in our schools. It must not be overlooked that athletics are needed to develop and condition our bodies in this age of easy living. Modern conveniences in the home and trans- portation facilities certainly give us us no chance to develop ourselves physically. This could be dangerous, for we see in history of the many times powerful nations have fallen because of the laziness of their people. Athletic programs are necessary, then, to keep us working together as a team of Americans and to keep us physically strong and ready to defend our country. The Mascoutin for 1958 seeks to show its appreciation and recognition to those who have inaugurated and taken part in our athletic programs.
