Shad ium Vol ume Borty-One Berl in Higk Berlin, W isconsin Dedication” Tliis yearbook is dedicated to all those people who believe, as we do, that athletic programs are an important function of America’s schools. Through school athletic programs the student learns much more about what is necessary for a full life than how to hit a home run or punt fifty yards. He learns the basic principles on which our country is run — co-operation. Physical education classes teach this to all high school students. In addition, the Girls Athletic Association and co-curricular sports for boys further develops the student if he has the time to belong to these organizations. Totalitarian governments emphasize not the worth of the individual hut the glorification of the state. They do not value the outcome to the individual, such as physical fitness and body co-ordination. In a democracy the worth of the indi- vidual is stressed rather than this glorification of state. Citizenship classes stress the need for co-operation to preserve democracy. What better way is there to teach a student this feeling of unity than through ath- letics? Through learning together and striving for a common goal—to win — it is only natural that these students keep striving for a common goal in their daily lives — to win in life by co-operation. Even though athletic programs are important for the development of America’s students, it must be remembered that the primary function of our schools must be to develop a well-rounded person that will be prepared to meet life when he grad- uates. Scholastic achievement in the classroom must still remain of topmost im- portance in our schools. It must not be overlooked that athletics are needed to develop and condition our bodies in this age of easy living. Modern conveniences in the home and trans- portation facilities certainly give us us no chance to develop ourselves physically. This could be dangerous, for we see in history of the many times powerful nations have fallen because of the laziness of their people. Athletic programs are necessary, then, to keep us working together as a team of Americans and to keep us physically strong and ready to defend our country. The Mascoutin for 1958 seeks to show its appreciation and recognition to those who have inaugurated and taken part in our athletic programs. Editorial Co-operation and the spirit of working together is one of the many things learned at Berlin High School. One of the ways in which this is accomplished is through our athletic programs. Physical education classes as well as the Girls Ath- letic Association for girls and after school sports for boys teach the fundamentals of sportsmanship to Berlin High students and provide after school entertainment for them. Our athletic teams have many accomplishments that they have earned in the past fifteen years. The basketball team of 1944-1945 went to the state tournament at Madison. In 1956 the team won the sectional tournament here. Our football teams have been Little Ten Conference champions or co-champions five times since 1946. Also, w'e won the baseball conference title in 1954. These are some of the athletic highlights of Berlin High School. We do not concentrate solely on athletics, however; speech, music, and various club work is offered the students. Scholastic achievement is, of course, stressed most highly. There are many students and teachers at Berlin High that deserve recognition for the work they are doing and have done along the scholastic line. It w'ould he impossible to give all who deserve it credit here. Several of our teachers have or are working for their master’s degrees, many of them on scholarships. It should also be noted here that on March 13, 1958, our school system was changed from a city district to a common school district. This type of school or- ganization will tend to bring the school closer to the people and will facilitate the improvement of our area education program. We hope that this yearbook has shown you that extra-curricular programs are important secondary functions of our schools and that these programs make it possible that each student can develop to his fullest capacity. Jean Gottbehuet, Editor Owners” GORDON JAMES President JOHN GILLETT CHARLES MILLER GLENN MICHAELS ERVIN EHRLICH Vice President BEN SEAMAN HAROLD BOENING BEN GROTA Clerk HOWARD BARNES HAROLD KLASSA WILFRED HANDRICH NORBERT MENDLESKI LEONARD MARKOFSKI LEONARD KRESAL HAROLD SPANGLER WALTER DROVER ARNOLD NUMMERDOR MILTON JANNUSCH s u M anager n In this age of missiles and satellites the emphasis within the school is shifting from “wheel” to brains. The high schools will not, however, follow the Russian pattern and concentrate wholly on book learning. The importance of a co-curricular program is well established in the develop- ment of people of high school age. The informal contact of teacher and pupil in the activities provides an atmosphere for types of learning that cannot be easily duplicated in the classroom. Participation in sports, dramatics, forensics, music and the publications provide the spark for clean and zestful living. Evaluation of others can more easily be made, resulting in lasting friendships. The student who thoughtfully supplements class work with a balanced activity program will not only be happier during his years in high school but will benefit immeasurably when he presents his credentials for admission to college or in his application for his first job after graduation. C. R. Wolf, Superintendent Umpire As we enter an era where leisure time is becoming a major concern to each one of us, the co-curricular program in our schools becomes more important. Our physical education program takes on a new light with the accessability of modern gadgets and transportation facilities. If America is to remain strong physic- ally, then we need to develop a sound life-long program for our graduates. Besides keeping physically fit, we need to be concerned with preparing our minds for leisure time. Such activities as speech, dramatics, and music serve this purpose. I hope our teachers are doing their part in preparing our students for their leisure time. C. F. Shaw, Principal 11 LAWRENCE BLACKBOURN W.S.C. Platteville, B.E. B.A Vocational Agriculture F.F.A. The Doss family is made up of the so-called “unadoptables” or children of mixed parentage. People often are prejudiced about such children and this was the case in this play. Donny Doss, the eldest son, wanted to marry Nan Johnson, daughter of a Texas millionaire. This situation brought out the fact that the Johnsons were against the match because of the unusual Doss family. After many funny and some not-so-funny experiences. Nan and Donny get engaged and the Johnsons learn what a wonderful family the Doss family really is. “The Family Nobody Wanted” is the true story of the author and her husband. It is one of the many episodes that have happened to this family as a result of its unusual background. The couples in formal dress entered the gym over a bridge. This and bushes and trees placed throughout the gym increased the illusion of a garden. Russ Nelson provided the music and the couples danced until it was time to go to the Dawn Club for a lunch and more music, this time by a rock and roll band. In the wee hours of the morning, the tired but very happy couples could be seen on their way home from this year’s Prom. Dolata FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA Future Farmers of America is a club just for the boys that take agriculture in high school. It gives them a chance to learn more in the field of farming, and helps them to gain the qualities and feeling of leadership they need as they carry out the responsibilities of a junior farmer. The members may remain in the club for three years after they graduate from high school or until they are twenty-one years old. Each agriculture student carries out a farming project of his own. On this pro- ject he puts into practice the farming knowledge he has gained in the classroom. The F.F.A. does not confine itself entirely to projects but puts on a successful banquet and sponsors two educational trips for the young farmers. They also pro- duce a basketball team that competes both locally and with other schools. The F.F.A. often lends money to students whose families cannot help them get a start in farming.
