Volume Tlnrty-Nine Berlin High Berl in, 'Wisconsin Christening” THE DEDICATION On December 4, 1955, the new addition and gymnasium of Berlin High was dedicated to its students who so valiantly served their country in time of war. To open the ceremonies Reverend John Francis gave the invocation. Following that, Gordon James, President of the School Board, introduced the Board members and all those who helped make the addition possible. The band and chorus entertained with appropriate selections. The main speaker of the afternoon was Dr. Glen Eye of the University of Wisconsin. In his address he warned that a school should be a place of learning and not just a city monument. In closing the benediction was given by Father Charles Monroe. This was followed by open house in which the crowd was given an opportunity to inspect the new facilities. ”In Memoriam Jeanette and George Wentland IN MEMORY The staff of the 1956 Mascoutin feels that it is fitting that its year- book should pay tribute to two students who might have shared in and been a part of the many activities which are reviewed in this book. Jeanette and George Wentland, victims of the fatal polio epidemic that struck during the summer of 1955, would have been members of the freshman class this year. Those who knew George and Jean will certainly miss having them to share their high school activities. We are sure that these two students would have been an important asset to our high school. Editorial” ■i The students of Berlin High have good reason to agree that the con- struction of its addition was a “blessed event”, and we owe a debt of gratitude to the far-sighted citizens of Berlin who made it possible. We feel certain that it will prove to be a great asset to the community by helping to better educate its youth. The bigger and more modern facilities broadened our horizons and made possible a number of events. We were hosts to a basketball tourna- ment, two music tournaments, and a home show. The larger gymnasium facilitated a bigger prom, and better staging for the class play. The new classrooms and library not only relieved congestion, but provided more cheerful class surroundings. Truly, our first year in the new addition was an eventful one and it is my hope that the MASCOUTIN has reviewed and recaptured some of the big moments of this past year. Janet James Editor, 1956 MASCOUTIN Foster Fathers” Gordon James President Harold Klassa Vice President lOO 1 Board) Ben Grota Clerk Harold Spangler F A C U L T Y and C L A S s E S Superintendent” In this age of automotion the emphasis will be on developing trained and well adjusted human beings. Since our country is dedicated to the principles of democracy the welfare and happiness of its people will continue to be its prime concern. The high school will play an ever increasing part to bring about this broad objective. To maintain the status quo is not enough for this rapidly changing time. Our young people need to have a well balanced education that will prepare them to meet the challenges of this new world. Our new facilities have given our high school a tremendous boost in morale. It is our hope that the community will recognize the poten- tiality of its school in preparing its young people and in its ability to serve the community. C. R. Wolf Principal As each school year passes, we sometimes overlook the total educa- tional development that has taken place in students’ minds. When the present graduating class of 1956 entered high school four years ago, very few of these students, then just finishing the eighth grade, had any defin- ite idea of what kind of work they wanted to prepare themselves for. If one would ask the present class of ’56 what they intend to do, you would get definite answers, as, “I am going on to be a nurse, teacher, or I intend to go into office work, or plan to be a farmer . . The fact that these graduates have made up their minds what they want to do is a part of the total educational development that the school is working toward and interested in. It is our hope that as each year passes, the school will progress educationally so that future graduates will be better prepared to meet the highly technical age that we are entering. C. F. This year a new method of gaining experience went into effect whereby club members gave the closing announcements for each school day. Students who belong to the club may obtain their forensic letters by receiving an “A” rating at the District contest, or by belonging to the club for three years. This year a record high of five students won the honor of attending the state forensic meet. SPEECH WINNERS P. James, K. Keehn, G. Jones, R. Knight, T. Maik JUNIOR HISTORIANS BACK ROW — V. The purpose of this club is to learn about local historical events which have not been widely publicized in books, magazines or papers. The club has also written their own constitution. The members have received pins, membership cards, and a club magazine which is called the 30th Star. Some members are entering a state sponsored essay con- test. The club is also planning a field trip at the end of the year. F. T. A. The C. D. Lamberton chapter of the National Future Teachers of America was organized for those students interested in the teaching profession. The purpose of this club is to learn about the opportunities in teaching, to cultivate the qualities essential in a good teacher, and to foster the development of student leadership. Occasionally members may be called upon to conduct elementary and high school classes. Mr. Warnecke is the faculty advisor of the organization. FUTURE TEACHERS CLUB BACK ROW — V. Hempel, D. Klein, B. They do a great service to the school because one librarian could not possibly do all that is required of her alone. This is valuable aid to the students also, because many of them are then able to secure jobs in college libraries thus helping to pay their way. THE BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL JOURNAL The high school Journal was first organized five years ago. The two-fold purpose of the club is to stimulate student interest in the jour- nalism field, and to inform the public of school interests and functions. And the tenpins go rolling. That’s a fairly common occur- rence as the club meets every Thursday at the local alleys. The sixteen members of the Ski Club and their advisors, Miss C. Martin and Miss D. Braeger, plan and participate in field trips to the ski meets. Each couple was greeted by an archway covered with climbing roses, the entrance to the enchanted park. They were swept on, into a story-book adventure where a few dreamy hours were spent among sidewalk cafes, ice-blue trees, swings and dancing couples. A picket fence, wall murals, and a band-stand for the orchestra helped to complete the charming effect of a quaint little park. All too soon the big evening was over, and the crowd hurried on to Dawn Club, post-prom and breakfast parties, which lasted until the wee hours of the morning.
