MASCOUTIN 1955 DEDICATION We, the members of the Mascoutin Staff, dedicate this, our 1954-1955 annual to each and every individual who has had a share in making our new building a reality and an enduring monument to education. To the members of the Board of Education, past and present, the city council, civic organiza- tions, school administrators, faculty, our parents, and the many other loyal friends of Berlin Eligh School, who have so generously given this project their loyal support, we are particularly grateful.

A BOY AND A DRUM During that first week of school 4 years ago, the big job for us freshmen was getting acquainted. One of the boys that was soon known by all was a dark curly haired lad who played a drum. This boy was Le Roy Lang. On the afternoon of September 2, 1954, Lc Roy was practicing football at the school field with his friends on the team. Less than eight hours from that time, Le Roy lay dead at the scene of an automobile accident just north of Berlin. The curly haired lad would not play football with his pals afterall, and his drum would wver be rolled again. To his classmates Le Roy stood for a good time, jokes, and lots of fun. His drum was heard many nights after school in the band room with the notes from two coronets, a saxaphone, and a trombone joined in a jam session. To his many friends from school it seems like Le Roy has just taken a trip and forgot to tell us where he was going. We will never forget his cherry ‘Hi,’ his friendly smile, or his hearty laugh. No one will ever know why he was taken when he was or in the way he was, but all of us, students and teachers alike, will miss him. I feel certain though, that God has just called His star drummer home to play in His band, and that somewhere in Heaven there stands a black, curly haired 16 year old boy who will never stop rolling his drum.
