MASCOUTIN 1955 DEDICATION We, the members of the Mascoutin Staff, dedicate this, our 1954-1955 annual to each and every individual who has had a share in making our new building a reality and an enduring monument to education. To the members of the Board of Education, past and present, the city council, civic organiza- tions, school administrators, faculty, our parents, and the many other loyal friends of Berlin Eligh School, who have so generously given this project their loyal support, we are particularly grateful. A BOY AND A DRUM During that first week of school 4 years ago, the big job for us freshmen was getting acquainted. One of the boys that was soon known by all was a dark curly haired lad who played a drum. This boy was Le Roy Lang. On the afternoon of September 2, 1954, Lc Roy was practicing football at the school field with his friends on the team. Less than eight hours from that time, Le Roy lay dead at the scene of an automobile accident just north of Berlin. The curly haired lad would not play football with his pals afterall, and his drum would wver be rolled again. To his classmates Le Roy stood for a good time, jokes, and lots of fun. His drum was heard many nights after school in the band room with the notes from two coronets, a saxaphone, and a trombone joined in a jam session. To his many friends from school it seems like Le Roy has just taken a trip and forgot to tell us where he was going. We will never forget his cherry ‘Hi,’ his friendly smile, or his hearty laugh. No one will ever know why he was taken when he was or in the way he was, but all of us, students and teachers alike, will miss him. I feel certain though, that God has just called His star drummer home to play in His band, and that somewhere in Heaven there stands a black, curly haired 16 year old boy who will never stop rolling his drum. By Mary Cassidy The Architects” “THE WAY TO BETTER LIVING BEGINS WITH BETTER SCHOOLS” An American school, today, is a place where knowledge grows, where character develops, where freedom thrives. It is a place where good citizenship is learned by children, and practiced by adults. Where human thought and behavior are guided and tempered by wisdom and truth. It is a prime source of every community’s welfare, productiveness and growth. We are grateful to our Berlin school board for providing these opportunities for the people of our community. Our school administrators and teachers deserve a share of the credit for their invaluable contributions to our schools. The school doors have been opened to Parent-Teacher group and for public discussions, and enabled everyone to help shape its course as a community en- terprise of the most fruitful kind. All of us, at any age, may turn to a school for help and inspiration in attaining what is most rewarding for ourselves, individually and together. We the class of 1955 had the opportunity and enjoyment of seeing our wond- erful building project develop. Yet just as surely as if our footsteps echoed in those corridors we feel we are a part of this monument to education lor the youtlr and to adults of our area. Our sincere hope is that this annual will then be a reminder of our golden high school days and that you will gain many enjoyable moments by reliving those experiences. Carol Ann Lehman, Judy Van Sistine Co-Editors ” 1 lie I rustees” Gordon James President Alvin Petruschke Vice President Ben Grota Clerk Wilfred Handrich Ben Seaman Harold Klassa Howard Barnes Norbert Mendleski John Gillett Leonard Kresal Lee Harrington With the passing of Edward Mendleski, the Berlin City Schools lost a faithful friend, advisor and supporter. During his three decades on the Board of Education he did much to make the dream of a new building become a living reality. F A C U L T Y and C L A S S E S V-T In the past, the major emphasis of a high school program was placed on the mastery of subject matter. During the past decade, a realization that our young people would need more than factual knowledge, has changed the objectives of our schools. Today we like to think of the school as a laboratory to provide worthwhile experiences for working and living together. We are thankful that the citizens of our community have provided the facili- ties that will make this new type of curriculum possible. It is recognized that a building does not necessarily make a school. It will, however, make possible this new type of program. The goal of our school will be to do all in our power to prepare our pupils as effective citizens. Also by cooperative action, help solve the many problems of human relations by a team approach. C. R. Wolf ” file Contractors'7 It would be interesting if we could turn the clocks back to the year 1917. It was at this time that the plans for our present high school building were put into reality. From 1917 to 1955, a period of 38 years, this present building has served the needs of thousands of Berlin youths. It is the hope that the plans that have gone into our wonderful addition will serve the future youth with greater educational opportunities than before. It will be necessary for us to live in this new part for a while to get the feeling of the opportunities that it affords us. I know all of you students as well as the faculty who will be back next year are looking forward with a great amount of enthusiasm to the open- ing of this new addition. C. F. Our Championship team Pep Rally Class Play “SPRING FEVER SENIOR CLASS PLAY The action of this light comedy took place entirely in the living room of Mrs. Spangler’s rooming house at Brookfield College in the East. The time was the day before Commencement in the latter part of May. The efforts of I Ioward Brant and his friends to see that he graduated and the efforts of everyone con- cerned to get Brookfield the money for a new Science building provided many amusing moments for tbe attentive audience. The play, under the direction of Miss Zuern and Mr. Wentzel, was pre- sented as a matinee for the student body and in the evening for the public. “SPRING FEVER” CAST Howard Brant, a senior who may not graduate . Kirchhoff, CHEERLEADERS At the beginning of each school year, some of the most important things being chosen are the “Cheerleaders”. Faculty and students play their part by voting ten energetic students for the “A” and “B” squads, who lead the cheers at both the football and basketball games. A cheerleader must be neat looking, have lots of pep, and a clear speaking voice, to be understood when yelling loudly. They all appear at football and basketball games, and they also prepare pep meetings. ‘B” TEAM CHEERLEADERS P. O'Kon, J. Wild, D. Bombinski G.A.A. OFFICERS First Row: K. Schiessl, G. Hughes.
