Editorial DEDICATION In order to give credit to the people who are furthering freedom of the press, we the students of Berlin High, dedicate our annual, the Mascoutin, to them. Without these citizens our education would be limited. With freedom of the press, — local, state, national, and inter- national, — news has been available to all people. The newspaper contains news, advertisements, editorials, and other matters of public interest. It is is a publication issued daily or at less frequent intervals for public circulation. The newspaper has spread to all the corners of the earth, within the grasp of all, through the invention of telephone, telegraph, and wireless. Freedom of the press which involves the right of every citizen to print what he chooses is a comparatively recent phenomenom in most countries. In America, ever since the Zenger trail in colonial times, freedom of the press has been constant except in time of war and emergency. In most European countries, especially those under dic- tatorship, the freedom of the press is admittedly void. It is our duty as future citizens of the United States to preserve this hard-won free- dom. Managing Editor It is the purpose of our annual to retain for us in the years to come some of the events of our high school days. This past school year has been very eventful. Our football team became Little Ten undefeated champions and this made our Homecoming very exciting. The Band and Choral groups came back from the tournament with all first awards breaking previous records. And to add to this our South Pacific” Prom was one of the prettiest in years. Although all the happenings can’t be written and pic- tured in the Mascoutin we shall still remember them. One such event is the realization that Berlin High will very soon have a beautiful new building to accommodate its growing needs. The City Council voted and approved the new addition and construction will begin in the very near future. This addition will provide seven new classrooms, offices and a large new gymnasium for our student body. Our school is progressing and growing to adjust to its needs. I hope the Mascoutin will advance and fluctu- ate to supply its needs in the future. This spirit reflects the relationship that exists between faculty and students in performing their every day tasks. This friendly relation- ship has resulted in many privileges for the student body. Freedom of speech assumes that we have learned the basic fundamentals of language. We all recognize, however, the we must learn much more to deserve our freedoms. We must learn that where privileges are granted we must be will- ing to assume responsibilities and duties. The development of our ability to give and take is one of the greatest assets in a free society. As in good news reporting we must develop a reputation for fairness. We cannot have personal freedom if we deny fair treatment to others. It is our hope that the members of the class of 1954—the largest ever to grad- uate-will take their place as responsible citizens. The real test of what they have learned will be in the manner in which they use their education. Let them always cherish their American heritage with the knowledge that freedom can easily be lost—in part or in full. C. R. Wolp Contrary to statements that sometimes one hears, I find that the majority of our students are thinking and planning for their luture security. The best way to obtain this security is to develop a good mind. Along with a good mind goes social adjustment, or the ability to get along with other people. The philosophy back of our high school program is to graduate students that are both mentally alert and socially adjusted. I am sure that our faculty has been aware of this need and have worked hard to accomplish this end. Our students are competing on even terms with graduates of other schools. They are going into business, into the professions, entering our colleges and Universities for further learning, and are doing a good job. To the Seniors that are graduating may I extend best wishes for a successful life, and to the underclassmen, may your remaining high school years develop the foundation upon which a solid future can be built. The whole trouble started when the principal, vice-principal and two teachers were unable to be at Ames High for the day. Many difficulties arose when the Student Council members were asked to take over. All in all, everything turned out fine. The Senior Class profited $145 through the presentation.
