A A V • . - v - ' T ?i§ . £«£ :S,X i? MASCOUTIN IN MEMORY OF . . . To the hundreds of Berlin High School graduates who are serving their great country and particularly to those who gave their lives while in the Armed Forces — we offer tribute. In particular do we honor Alvin Kobiske, who recently died while in the service of his country. Alvin was a member of the graduating class of 1949. 1953 DEDICATION This year the students of Berlin High School are very proud to dedicate their annual, Mascoutin, to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion and their respective Auxiliaries as a token of their recognition in the most admirable field of public service and community spirit. Both organizations have done much to help, not only the community as a whole, but the school and its students in particular. The Veterans of Foreign Wars has done many and varied services for our students and school, one being the loaning of the Post’s bleachers which were 1 O O used at our athletic contests and were certainly appreciated. Then, the Post offers a Veterans of Foreign Wars award each year to one of the senior class boys. The award is offered on the merits of outstanding athletic achievements. This group also was quite prominent in its efforts during the community- wide sponsorship of the Mascoutin Round-up this fall, and sponsored a boy and girl for King and Queen. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies’ Auxiliary has done much for the school and community, also. Their contributions range from promoting the Parent-Teacher’s Association to the sponsorship of an annual Veterans of For- eign Wars Auxiliary essay contest. The Ladies’ Auxiliary offers an award each year to a senior girl. This is offered on the merits of the student’s academic ability, musical achievements and citizenship. Equal acknowledgment is given to the American Legion and their Auxiliary for their excellent work in promoting better relationships in the community and the school system. Each year the American Legion offers a medal to a senior boy for excep- tional academic standing, fine leadership and outstanding athletic ability. They also promote initiative on the part of the underclassmen by sponsoring a boy to attend Badger Boys’ State, which is certainly a most commendable and beneficial project. They have done much to help make the Mascoutin Round-up successful and worthwhile by participation in the sponsorship of a prospective King and Queen. The Auxiliary of the American Legion has many fine projects. They, too, offer an award each year to a senior girl on her outstanding citizenship and school activity participation merits. The ladies sponsor a girl each year to send to Badger Girls’ State plus many other community projects. Through the efforts of these four fine organizations much has been done for our students and in promoting public spirit and initiative. Once again we would like to express our sincere appreciation to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion and their Auxiliaries for their excellent and successful efforts to promote our community and encourage our students to become better and more progressive citizens by setting an example for all of us. Master Sergeant We can never hope to express in words or pictures those times of high school life that are so very near and dear to us all. The excitement of the freshmen; the sense of belonging of the sophomore; the antici- pation of graduating of the junior; and finally the sudden realization of leaving good old Berlin High of the senior . . . the school spirit and cooperation; the joys and sorrows can not be put down in black and white but they can be brought back as sweet memories as one glances through the pages of their high school annual. It is my sincere hope that this Mascoutin will serve as that connecting link between you and your school in the years to come, and that it will provide you with many pleasant memories. Karlyn Weiske Editor-in-Chief Gordon James President CllAS. WlLDERMUTH •• — Norbert Mendleski Board of Education Ben Seaman V ice-President Wilfred Handrich William Nelson Mrs. Claire Johnson School Clerk c cl, ommancier - m - Chief All of us have hopes, ambitions, and a desire to succeed in our life’s work. If we are realists we recognize that the value of the success and happiness we attain depends upon our point of view. We know that no one ever achieves complete success and happiness. We will experience many failures with our successes, and many hours of frustration and grief will mar our periods of happiness. Let us remember that happiness is not mere laughter, and success is not measured only by earning power. We should rather set our goal at achieving peace of mind and being content with what we have. We should be ambitious but have a good philosophy for living. Let us be sure to have standards, that are based on real values. Berlin High School is proud of this graduating class. Since diligence and ability to plan are of utmost importance; we can rest assured that the school experience of these seniors has given them a real start on the road to success. Our best wishes go with the Class of 1953—may they be successful and happy in the challenging years ahead. C. R. Wolf Five Star General Each year the Mascoutin does a fine job of reliving the many events that have occurred during the school year. This year is no exception. The year 1952-53 has been filled with hard work and constructive play. Berlin High School follows the philosophy of trying within its abilities, to help each individual child develop mentally, physically and socially to the best of his abilities. Surely we realize our handicaps, but where both the teacher and pupil work together toward a common goal, much good is bound to come out of these experiences. It is my hope that the class of “53” will look back on their four years at Berlin High and have the feeling of satisfaction that comes from doing one’s best. C. F. Being an officer lor a class is a very important job, and is taken with the knowledge that it requires time, and especially the willingness to work. The duties of officers are tew, but important. The president has charge of meetings, keeps order, and handles most of the problems and business of his class. The vice-president assists the president and takes charge of meetings when the president is absent. A secretary keeps accurate minutes of the meet- ings and handles the class correspondence. The treasurer has charge of class funds, and is always ready with a report of the class’ financial standing. Class officers are elected in a democratic election by their fellow class mem- bers at the beginning of the school year. They carry out their duties from the time they are elected to the end of the school year. The class officers of Berlin Fligh School have done a fine job this past year, and have worked hard. They have kept their individual classes working together. Every class from Freshmen to Seniors has accomplished much this past year because of their able and ambitious leaders. Its chief functions are to improve the physical appearance of our school, to encourage school spirit, to promote a student activity program and to better relations between students and faculty. One of the major projects toward improving the appearance of our school was the purchase of the announcement cabinet for the lower hall. It certainly improved the looks of the hall. The annual sale of Homecoming pins helps to boost the school spirit. The work of the council in planning the dance schedule and in arranging the transportation of students by bus to out-of-town games is definitely appreciated by the student body. This year, the Student Council sent four representatives to the Governor’s Youth Conference held on April 24 and 25 in Madison, Wisconsin. This experience proved successful through its educational reward. The discussion of the problems of today’s youth was very interesting. We must not forget that our council is instrumental in creating better inter-school relations with our fellow Little Ten schools. This would certainly be a difficult task to perform as individuals. In conclusion, we may say that the interests of the student body are a direct influence to the actions of this repre- sentatives group. Right to left: Mr. Shaw, J. Seward, B. Wolf, B. Blayney, P. THE BAND AND CHORUS TOURNAMENT The Band and Chorus tournament was held at Waupun on Saturday, May, the second. Due to rainy weather the parade was not held. This was Berlin’s first year in Class A. We received second ratings in both sight reading and concert. The A bands were judged dur- ing the evening program. Fon du Lac, Ripon and Waupun were the other participating A bands. The mixed Chorus sang at the City Flail just before noon. Under the direction of Berlin’s vocal teacher, Miss Yvonne Jobelius, the chorus sang “To Thee We Sing,” “Great Day,” and “Rose Marie.” In the afternoon after the bands had finish- ed playing, the gym floor was cleared and popular music was played for all those who wished to dance. As a general rule, those who are in some music field are active members of this club. As most clubs have some project, the project for this year was a dance. The procedure of the club meeting goes something like this. The President, Patsy Cross, calls the meeting to order. The Secretary, Kay Kaiser, reads the minutes. Then the Treasurer, Jeanine Ziegenhagen, gives her report. Old business is discussed. Then the new business is asked for and discussd. A person is appointed to present the next meeting’s music. The best part of the meeting, in many of the member’s opinion, is the musical feature. The records played are semi-classical, classical, operas, and symphonies. These musical melodies as well as good times, are enjoyed by all those who belong to the Music Club. First Row, left to right: B. Mathes, S. Erdman, P. LeBreche, H. Miller, B. Leitch, J. PEP BAND The peppiest organization in high school is the Pep Band. Since it is so large, approximately ?? students, Mr. Franz divided it into three groups, and a rotation plan was formed, each group in turn playing for all of our pep meetings. Besides this, the whole Pep Band played for our football and basket- ball games. During the half time of the basketball games, this group of students with musical talent performed by playing novelty tunes and stirring marches. It was different and enthused the crowd. DANCE BAND The Dance Band is a very welcome sight at all of our high school dances. Not only does this band play for our own dances, but it has had the oppor- tunity to play at several other high school’s dances. This is an organization composed of a small group of talented musicians, 14 to be exact, who have had fun getting together and playing popular music. 1 he money the Dance Band gets for playing goes into the purchase of the latest popular hit parade songs. _ DANCE BAND First Roir, I. to r.: B. The following people have been elected as oflicers of the club: President, Donald Bednarek; Vice-President, Eunice Dissen; Secretary, Rose Kellogg; I rcasurer, Gwen Jorgensen; and Parliamentarian, Carol Kreuger. Last Year in the first part of November, the students and their advisor, Mr. Hugh Jones, went to Kaukauna to attend the Speech Institute. This is the only one that they plan to attend. SPEECH WINNERS The I orensics students who received an “A” rating at the Little Ten League Forensic Contest and went on to the District were: Marilyn Ehrlich in Humor- ous Declamation, Violet Kirk in Serious Declamation, Janet James in Extempo- raneous Reading, Don Rosebrook and Eunice Dissen in Extemporaneous Speak- ing, Carol Meverden and Tom Thompson in Minute Speaking, Gwen Jorgen- sen in Original Oration, and Julissa Flanigan in Non-original Oration. This page appears in the paper that comes out on Saturday night. The purpose of writing in the Journal is to let the people of the com- munity know what is happening in school. Mr. Wahlers, Miss Llnderberg, Miss Girard, Miss McNett, Miss Jansen and Mr. Warnecke are the teachers in charge of the paper, and they see that the assignments are turned in to the paper JUNIOR HISTORIANS The Junior Historian Club is a great benefit to Civics and History classes of the high school. Each year they make an effort to study the his- tory of some factory, church, or industry in the community. This enables the students to under- stand their environment and also to become better citizens. The Club also sponsors the Valentine Dance, puts on pep meetings, candy sales, and engages in other activities. One of the main objects this year is to make a complete study of Fur and Leather Industries in and around Berlin. As a reward for their earnest efforts, they plan to take a trip in the spring. on time. Each teacher has a certain article every week to assign and to approve. The paper has an editor, managing editor, proof-readers, typists, reporters, and copy edi- tors. The editor this year is Joanne Doro, with Don Rosebrook as managing editor. As you can see there is a lot of hard work in printing and putting out even a part of a paper, but I am sure the people of Berlin enjoy reading what is going on at Berlin High School as much as the stu- dents enjoy writing it for the paper. The cast consisted of Frederic Ziegenhagen as the husband, Mar- gery Nipko as his wife, Frank Gaylord as a man, Richard Thomas as the friend, Don Krueger the gangster, Gwen Jorgensen as the girl, Mary LaBreche as a mother and Irene Alf as her daughter. Lyle Murton was the prompter of the play and James Harrington the stage manager. The play received an “A” rating at the district meet at Shawano. It was then given at the sec- tional meet at Stevens Point, where it was given “D” a d rating. The officers of the club are Julissa Flanigan, president; Elaine Sternat, vice-president; and Margery Nipko, secretary-treasurer. Miss Jansen is the advisor of the Dramatics Club. During the year, they hold style shows for the public, bake and fancy sales, and banquets for various occasions. At Christmas time they made and sold decorative corsages. Mrs. Gneiser and the girls would like to oper- ate the club similar to the F.F.A. From the money earned during the year, they would like to go on a trip and see how home economics is being handled in different cities and localities. The Club is good to the effect that it pre- pares the girls for future work and experiences. Being a good cook and sewer are two important steps to making your life successful. You are also learning to be neat which is an aid to your happiness. Good luck to the Club. BUS PATROL BUS PATROL First Row: A. Wiese, M. Sierakowski, C. Burrelli, M. Wetch, R. Dowell. Second Row: M. This recreation has to be suited to the students’ interest. It must he something the students can enjoy. One form of recreation they have chosen is the showing of movies at noon. These pictures have their educa- tional value, too. A humorous picture helps the student to cultivate a sense of humor and a picture, on safety tells him ways of improving his safety and the safety of his home. Other recreational activities the Noon Hour Club has sponsored are the dances held in the gym, the talent shows, and games, for which prizes are sometimes given. On the business side the club sometimes charges for the movies. The charges are a O t O nickel a day, or a quarter for a ticket which entitles you to see the movies until the ticket expires. The Club has done a very good job of keeping the students occupied and out of trouble and mischief. For the officers of their club, the mem- bers have chosen Violet Kirk as president, Elaine Sternat as Vice-President. William Moldenhauer has the office of secretary and Donna Posorske treasurer. The Berlin High School bus patrol is doing the job of keeping order in the buses. Everybody knows what a job that is, and they are doing it splendidly. The bus patrol has many problems to cope with. They must explain to the little children, who always insist on standing and running in the bus, why they are supposed to stay seated. They must keep under con- trol the rush that starts before the bus stops. If there were no bus patrols, the rate of accidents could and would increase rapidly. One more of their numerous jobs is taking roll call, both in the morning and after- noon, to see how many are riding and who are not. Usually the bus patrol can keep points of trouble down. A punishment that has been worked out is assigned seats. This means that everybody riding the bus is given a specific seat in which he must sit. Full cooperation of the students should be given to the deserving bus patrols. The bus patrol has formed a type of club which has meetings and discussions concerning the club’s business. As the offi- cers of this club they have chosen Donna Posorske as their worthy president, Ann Covill as the capable vice-president, and William Moldenhauer as the secretary and treasurer. It is a junior member of the Citv Conservation Club. Its big project this year was the planting of 10,000 trees. Lor entertainment they held a trap shoot at the old swimming pool, a vveiner roast, and once a month rifle range activities in the Manual Arts build- ing. This club is becoming more active every year, and boys as well as girls learn the proper ways of carrying, cleaning, loading, unloading, and shooting a gun. They learn the dangers and precautions needed when around guns also, and this valuable in- formation will come in handy every time they pick up a gun during their lifetime. The Conservation Club held a series of rifle shoots in the Manual Arts Building during the winter. The members shooting were divided into teams and each member had 10 shots at a target with a possible perfect score of 100. During the course of the event, which took seven weeks, the highest score shot was 85. This score was hit by Russel Chier. THE LIBRARY ASSISTANTS The library assistants help Miss Safford, the school librarian, in many ways. There are two girls from each assembly period who help her each hour of the day. In addition, there are two girls who are assigned each week to help her out after school. These girls are chosen from a list of volunteers. The assistants have many duties which they perform each day. These duties include checking books in and out and taking care of the over-due books by charging a penny for each day over-due. The assistants put the books, magazines and other library material in their proper places and keep them in order. When people are in need of reference material, the assistants help them find this material. They also recommend books to read. Assistants may also help Miss Safford catalog new material as it comes into the library. In Miss Safford’s absence, the assistants take complete charge of the library. Library assistants find their work very enjoyable. GIRL’S LEAGUE The Girl’s League, sometimes known as the Girl’s Board of Control, is composed of representatives from each class who are honor roll students. There are two fresh- men, two sophomores, three juniors, and four seniors. These girls are elected by the girls in each class. The Girl’s League is formed to create better understanding among the students. Each year they sponsor the Girl’s Mixer, Sadie Hawkins Dance, and May Dance. In November, they sponsored Bundle Week. The winners, this year, were the sophomores. GIRLS BOARD OF CONTROL Left to right: J. James, C. Meverden, G. Jorgen- sen, J. Flanigan, E. Kirk, F. Ziegenhagen, M. Nipko, B. Kotloski, S. Chier, C. PROJECTOR CLUB For the curious ones who wonder what goes on in the projector room of a theater and how to handle movie films, the Projector Club is just the club meant for them. Whether it’s a brand new film or an old one of the 1920’s, the boys of this club have to be prepared to run it off on the projector. They know what to do if the film breaks, and what the cause is when there is no sound. If any other troubles arise, they at least have an idea of what the origin of it is. Movies in the individual classrooms, and noon-hour movies in the assembly might be impossible without the aid of Projector Club members, so this club deserves a lot of credit and gratitude from the entire school for what they have done for the students and teachers during the past year. Under the able and understanding guidance of Mr. Blackbourn, the members of the Projector Club have had many happy moments during their hours of faithful service. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB For those interested in photography, there is no more fitting or enjoyable club to belong to than the school Photography Club. The purpose of this club is to develop skill in the taking, developing, and printing of good pictures. What really makes this club worth- while is not just the benefits the school as a whole gets from it, but the personal enjoyment and satisfaction of the individual member when he or she has successfully finished off a roll of film. FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA F.B.L.A. stands tor Future Business Leaders of America. The F.B.L.A. had its organizational meeting Tuesday, September 20, 1952. They elected their officers as follows: Marilyn Hartwig, President; Barbara Kotloski, Vice-President; Dolores Brey, Secretary; and Julissa Flanigan, Treasurer. The F.B.L.A. is composed of about 45 members who are students of Berlin High School. They have taken one business course and are planning to major in business. The students, under the direction of Miss Kuethe and Mr. Lenz, organized this club to help the members in their business courses. The club has its regular meeting on every second and fourth Tuesday of the month. During one of these meetings, they had as a guest speaker Mike Stoddard, who is the manager of Kroger’s Food Store in Berlin. At another O O meeting they toured the Berlin Chapman Company. These talks and tours are very highly educational. One of the projects taken on by the F.B.L.A. was selling pencils containing basketball schedules to the students. The club made a contest of selling the pencils. There was a prize given to the member who sold the most. The mem- bers are all very eager about selling them in that manner. The members of F.B.L.A. This project also provided the basketball fans with refreshments during the games. These are not the only projects the club takes on. They sponsor dances after games as well. The dance after the West Bend game was well-planned by the club members. This club, just like the rest of the clubs in high school, has candy sales. If some of the members do not have enough points for going on the trip, they can make them up by participating in the candy sale. The club has carried on these projects with the goal of going on a trip to Appleton and Menasha in the spring. They will visit the insurance building there and the Kimberly-Clark Corporation, along with other interesting places. In order for a member to go on this trip he must have participated in the follow- ing things: selling pencils and ice cream bars, attending the meetings regularly, and being on one committee for the dance that was sponsored by the club. There are a certain number of points each member must make in order to go on the trip. F.B.L.A. TRIP PICTURE First Row, left to right: M. Sierakowski, C. Burrelli, R. Leppin, J. Manske, R. Then you probably belong to the Berlin Chapter of the Future Farmers of America. This is the largest organization in Berlin High School. The total active membership is 83. The main fall event is the Farm Skills Contest which is held at a member’s farm each year. This year it was held at Daniel Kasuboski’s place. There were four main events held. The first one was the plowing contest in which F.F.A. members participate. This contest was won by Jim Steeps. The next student con- test was the machine demonstration. This was won by Richard Lehman and Arthur Polk. The last two events were something new and different. The Junior Chamber of Commerce of Berlin challenged the area farmers to two contests. The farmers went away with top honors, winning both contests. The first one was the trap-shoot which was won by Flenry Kirk. The next contest, won by Emil Heise was the calf-throwing event. He threw the calf in 16Vi seconds. The next big thrill came when the F.F.A. found out they had won a tele- vision set. This was done by selling subscriptions to a Chicago farm newspaper. The F.F.A. donated the set to the high school. The two big events that the High School used it for were the Presidential Inauguration and the Rose Bowl game. In order for the F.F.A. to function properly and carry out their many activi- ties, they had the following officers to govern them: Richard Lehman, President; Lee Eldred, Vice President; Bruce Buchanan, Secretary; Robert Kirk, Treasurer; Vernon Abel, Reporter; and Robert Waterman, Sentinel. AWARDS AND BANQUET Each year the F.F.A. has an awards night when those boys who have enough points receive their letters. Eight hundred points are required to obtain this award. The parents are invited to share the glory and pride of their sons at this presentation. If, by the time they are seniors and still haven’t received their let- ter because of a lack of points, they are given a small “B” to signify their leader- ship. Another name for this night is Initiation Night. Those of the Freshman Class who are capable of being members for the next year are promoted from the Greenhands to the Chapter Farmer position. In January, the Berlin F.F.A. Chapter won the D.H.I.A. State Dairy Effici- ency Contest. Berlin can be proud of its agriculture students, for they really out- did themselves this year. They put on a banquet for the parents and the general public in honor of their victory. Many outstanding people were present that night. Among them were D. R. Dugdale, Walter Lloyd, Myron Clark, and Beverly Steffens, last year’s Alice in Dairyland. Three hundred people were present at the banquet which was served by various high school girls. Lee Eldred, the Master of Ceremonies, presented many forms of entertain- ment much to the enjoyment of the audience. There were also speeches and musical entertainment. Here’s hoping the Berlin F.F.A. keeps up its good work. RED ’N’ GREEN OFFICERS AND ADVISORS Left to right: E. Kirk, A. Wendt, Miss McNett, J. Bartol, Miss Kuethe, Miss Girard. It had previously been aiven for the High School and Grade School students. o o This year’s selection was somewhat unique in type and varied from the conventional light comedy to a real mystery. The setting for the play was the living room of the Bailey home, a half ruined mansion situated on a desolated, barren stretch of land along the Atlantic Sea Coast. The story revolves around the group of people who arrive at the isolated, old mansion at midnight, only to find they had been summoned there by a fake tele- gram for reasons yet unknown. And although he never actually appears, it is around him that the entire play revolves. 1 he others question among their group and struggle to disclose the mystery of the place. In the course of events their discoveries range from a coupon stamp found by the quaintly outmoded country sheriff, to a cabinet that contains “Devil’s Breath” and is death to open. The scene is further set by the hooded figures who appear from time to time and the monster who lurks and threatens them all. Back of it all the signals of death are communicated by the dull, throbbing drums. The entire play was certainly extremely well put on, and the credit for its excellent directing goes to Miss Joan Jansen. ATHLETIC COUNCIL Organized during the 1951-52 school year, the Athletic Council attempts to give athletic-minded boys a democratic sports program. Members of the Council include grade school principal and coach, high school principal and coaches of all sports events, director of athletics, officers of “B” club, a representative from each upper class belonging to the “B” club and a potential freshman “B” club member. The winner of the John Boettge award, awarded for the second time this year to an outstanding Junior athlete, is chosen by the council. It also approves of all other athletic awards recommended to them by the coaches. Monthly meetings are held to discuss any problem that might have arisen pertaining to their field.
