In the fall of 1982, editors were elected and the entire Lamp staff began organizing ideas and thoughts for the 1982 yearbook with the help of the yearbook advisor, Mr. David Scannell. To help form and create new ideas for the yearbook, the staff attended a yearbook seminar at Columbia University in October. The seminar gave a chance to gain valuable information concerning the production of a successful yearbook. Next, the staff decided on definition for the book’s theme. Then the real work began with the actual layouts of the pages on the quad-paks, the cropping of the pictures, and the writing and typing of the captions and the write ups for each section. Throughout the year, many people gave their time and effort to help complete the yearbook. The following people were especially helpful with layouts, cropping, typing, and photography: Mark Berger, Sharon Blankenburg, Scott Calderone, Michele Cosgrove, Robyn DePianta, Paula Eshoo, Ken France, Lou Fiducia, Todd Harris, Anne Marier, Carrie Martin, Bob Morrissey, and Nancy LaPointe. The following people were helpful in selling advertisements for the 1982 Lamp yearbook: Janice Anderson, Ken Asal, Lou Anne Colamussi, Ken France, Geri Galvin, Judy Olson, Cheryl Owen, Jenny Powers, Li-saAnn Schrey, and Lisa Todeschini. Regardless of the many obstacles encountered by the staff, the 1982 Lamp successfully illustrates a record of the 1981-1982 year at Berlin High School. It is our hope that everyone enjoys this account of the history of Berlin High and takes pride in this publication. With the help of class advisor, Mrs. Col-aiacovo, this business venture proved to be a great success. On September twenty-seventh, the seniors officially welcomed the freshmen to Berlin High through Freshman Welcome Day. The freshmen dressed as Pebbles and Bam-Bam, and during the day they played many games, viewed cartoons and a movie, and enjoyed a box lunch with the seniors. Later in the evening, certain freshmen were welcomed, some more at Senior Court. Homecoming 1981 gave the freshmen their first experience to the B.H.S. formal events. The freshman attendant was Kathy Conner. This spirited class continued raising funds through a movie, car wash and a bake sale, and ended their year by sponsoring a farewell breakfast for the seniors. Eric Larson. Scott Allario, Coach Al Pelligrinelli, Kevin Milkey. Winning did not come easily for this year’s varsity football team. The Redcoats three victory seven loss record was not very satisfying, but that didn’t show the way the Redcoats played. The ’Coats played with such determination and will to win towards the end of the season that only a few bad breaks shattered their hopes of a winning future. Berlin started off its season with high hopes. Inexperience was a major handicap for Berlin, but they rose above this to defeat a swift Middletown High School 14-8. Berlin's hopes brightened until they met Watertown. Watertown came to Sage Park and left with a 28-0 victory. The schedule got no easier with East Lyme next on the agenda. Berlin, which had not beaten East Lyme in about ten years, played the most exciting game of their season. With only seconds left on the clock. East Lyme’s two point conversion attempt failed. Final Score, Redcoats 14 East Lyme 13. The next game, against conference foe Farmington, proved to be another close one. but the Redcoat's final effort was turned away and Farmington won 7-6. The going got tougher as 1980 conference co-champ Avon put down Berlin 22-8. The final win of the season came against Gilbert of Winsted when Berlin took a 20-14 victory. The rest of the season was less successful as Berlin lost its next two games to conference teams Woodrow Wilson 29-2 and Plainville 18-0. In the Homecoming game, Berlin painfully had the winning touchdown called back, because of a penalty, allowing a 12-8 South Catholic victory. In the last game of the season, Berlin jumped out to a fourteen to zero lead only to lose 20-14. Overall, the season held both disappointment and joy, and next year's team plans to bring the conference crown back to Berlin. As the season progressed with a tough Northwest Conference Schedule the team's record dropped to 6-11. “It’s difficult to single out one reason why the record shows so many losses but a lack of consistency from game to game has contributed. Losing and not showing any improvement would be disappointing but the players as a team have shown improvement and that’s satisfying, Coach Ken Parciak said. Senior Dan Durkee at center made a significant contribution to the inside game. Jamie Fusco a hard working, hustling, and team player can best describe Jamie. Mark Holmes worked hard to develop into a point guard and gave a defensive edge when he was on the floor. Three Sophomores Mauro Gozzo, Chris Loughlin, and Bob Mayer have improved greatly and have contributed this past season as Varsity starters. Leading the Redcoats this season were Doug Polanski and Herb Williams. Doug is a fine shooter and the Senior leader of the team. He has been a Varsity player since his sophomore year and has performed consistently for Berlin. Herb has developed as an inside player with a fine shooting touch inside. Senior Mark Holmes passes off to his teammate to start to the offense. Sophomore Mauro Gozzo towers over everyone as he prepares to grab the rebound. Senior Co-Captain Doug Polanski confidently takes a jump shot over his opponents. BOYS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM: First Row: Bob Mayer.
