As an English teacher of ten years at Berlin High School, Mrs. Miklos has devoted her time to both her teaching and several clubs and organizations at the school. She has unselfishly contributed her time and energy towards advising the Lamp staff in creating this publication, and her constant devotion to her work is an inspiration to all who know her. May this dedication be indicative of our appreciation of her outstanding efforts. 2 Berlin High School takes great pride in itself and its surroundings. Since 1936 both the American flag and the Connecticut State flag have been raised daily. TRADITION The senior courtyard has long provided a place for seniors to relax and socialize among themselves. Many can be seen studying beneath the spring sun or enjoying their lunch outdoors. The court- yard is one senior privilege which has always been appreciated. In 1 976 an addition and many renovations altered the appearance of Berlin High School. A new spectator gym and a media center highlight the change and are now in constant use by the entire student body. In the early morning the parking lot fills as both students and faculty begin another day. 3 The Berlin High class ring has changed much over the years. The ring is available in many different styles and with various types of stones; however, the lamp insignia is still the most popular Each class orders their rings as sophomores and receives them as juniors. The main office produces notices and announcements en masse which are posted throughout the building The weekly menu is always of interest to both students and faculty - ' fc-r Be they seniors or underclassmen, deserv- ing students are awarded many honors at year ' s end The trophy displays are proof that Berlin High School has graduated many capa- ble students throughout the years. Student publications include the school ' s newspaper and yearbook. Although both may vary from year to year, they always provide enjoyment for the entire student body. 4 The Homecoming ceremonies annually highlight the tall sports season. The Homecoming Queen and her court are chosen by popular student vote and are hon- ored during halttime ot the Homecoming football game That same evening many couples enjoy the semi-for- mal Homecoming Dance Every year the National Honor Society inducts many qualified stu- dents At the induction ceremony each student adds his or her name to the register. Every class and organization devotes a great deal of time and energy to fund-raising activities Magazine drives, car washes, dances and candy sales are just a few of the successful money makers. Always eagerly anticipated are the Junior and Senior Proms. Din- ner, dancing and the promise of an enjoyable evening attract many students. The new addition to the high school building provided well equipped rooms to house the department and its students. The major goal of the Art Department is to promote the presence and to stress the importance of art in man ' s envi- ronment. One means for promot- ing this awareness is the course offering of Humanities, an inter- disciplinary course taught in conjunction with the English Department. Other art offerings focus on special mediums such as ceramics, oil painting, jewelry and crafts. MARSHA STRUCALY Department Head CHRISTINA RIZZI Jewelry and Drawing 10 Business Keeping up with the business world, the Business Department is constantly changing both machines and teaching meth- ods. Office practice sets have just been added, and the curricu- lum has been revised to allow business students to take more courses in this area. The stu- dents learn their constitutional rights and the practical aspects of law in Business Law, a popular half year course Through D E C. A. and the school store, students gain hands on” experience in run- ning their own business. This worthwhile endeavor is advised by Business Department mem- bers and supervised by Miss Czarnecki. PATRICK PHAUP Department Head BETTY TRIDER Steno and Typing JUNE CZARNECKI Distributive Education English In order to broaden student backgrounds as well as to allow for more in-depth study of spe- cial areas, the English Depart- ment has undergone numerous curriculum changes Four years ago the department changed from the traditional four years of English to junior and senior elec- tives in English. The English Department is well diversified, the teachers pos- sessing varied backgrounds and interests. These teachers are involved in everything from advising the yearbook and school newspaper to coaching the volleyball team and field hockey team. This year has been a person- ally productive year in the Eng- lish Department with Mrs. Colaia- cavo, Mrs. Wotring, and Mrs. Miklos all having left to start fami- lies. Band and Chorus have become credit courses and are held during the school day. But any band member who attends the numerous football games, Tuesday night rehearsals, and concerts will testify to the fact that band requires more of a commitment than simply going to scheduled classes. In order to widen its appeal to all students, the Department has added such courses as Rock Music and Electronic Music I and II. These course offerings were made possible by new studios and equipment acquired during the building of the school ' s addi- tion. PAUL KARAM Director of Music JAMES T. BRUNI Choral and General Music u Science New equipment and teachers have changed the face of the Science Department. All lab courses now have specifically scheduled lab periods instead of using class time. PSSC Physics students marveled at the quality of their sophisticated lab equip- ment. Science teachers are con- stantly improving the department with the addition of new courses and textbooks. Horticulture classes maintained a flourishing garden in Junior Court while car- ing for their plants in the green- house. Students in Aviation and Aeronautics, a popular new elec- tive, recently visited a nearby air- port and were taken up in a plane and shown the airport’s facilities HAROLD KIRCHSTEIN Biological Sciences N JOAN CHICHESTER Aviation and Earth Sciences MARY ANN MAGNUSON Physical Sciences 15 FRED RUSSO Science Investigations 16 Foreign Languages The Foreign Language Depart- ment has undergone important changes in both faculty and cur- riculum Miss Elizabeth McBrien, Latin and French teacher, retired in spring of 1977 after many years of service to Berlin High School. In addition to offering basic language courses, the Depart- ment now offers half year courses to stimulate an interest in foreign languages in students who do not need college prepar- atory language but desire a working knowledge of another language for travel or career use The Foreign Language Depart- ment has also held fund raisers tor special events and field trips to promote foreign cultural awareness and heritage. Four years of required Physical Education was changed to two years of basic Physical Education plus junior and senior elective courses both in individual and team sports. The electives range from lacrosse to table tennis to social dancing. The overall effect of the change in Physical Education is that it now allows students to concentrate on sports in which they are interested and skilled Very large classes and a lack of space have always been a prob- lem for this department. Until the acquisition of more land, stu- dents will have to accept such interruptions as an occasional golf ball flying through their soft- ball game WILLIAM GIBNEY Physical Education PAT SNETRO Physical Education DONNA LILJESTRAND Physical Education KENNETH PARCIAK Physical Education PAUL BARRETTA Physical Education 18 AL PELLIGRINELU Physical Education WILLIAM RICCIO Mathematics Mathematics The Math Department has greatly expanded its program in the past four years with the arrival of the new computer sys- tem which is used for both daily attendance and report cards. Intricate programs were devel- oped by Department Head, Miss Peterson, Mr. Bates, and advanced math students so that the school runs smoothly with the computer’s assistance Many members of the department’s faculty devote much of their time to activities such as running the computer system, advising the Math Team, and coaching sports such as football and wrestling. More advanced courses in math- ematics and a new introductory computer course designed to expose even more students to computers are being planned. Yet in our time spent with each other We accomplish much more. Together We laugh, cry: We win. We lose. We know both frustration And accomplishment. All we share Brings us closer. But time Keeps moving each of us Along his own path. Now ive are all Walking together. But H e will feel a parting And must be prepared To go our own ways. Maybe ive want To hold on to our high school years. But we know That ive can only enjoy these times once. And that it is foolish To remain the same. Nancy V. Lindahl 101 102 Freshman Year Our first year at Berlin High began in confusion, as we tried to find our way through the new addition and the on-going construction We were offi- cially initiated into Berlin High as sheiks and bellydancers with all of the lipstick, whipped cream, singing, and pranks that orientation entails Amid all of the excitement and changes of our freshman year, Acting Principal Mr Donald Delisle was replaced by Mr George Cleaveland As Homecoming closed the football season, Laurie Adams was chosen freshman attendant Under the lead- ership of freshman class officers Mark Vartanian, Frank Satalme, Greg Nied and Leslie Young the class sponsored two successful money raising efforts, the traditional magazine drive and freshman dance At the end of the school year we said goodbye to the seniors at a fifties ' breakfast Miss Cynthia Sieracki is the class of ’79 ' s first advisor Freshman Class Officers: Secretary Greg Nied, Trea- surer Leslie Young, President Mark Vartanian, and Vice President Frank Sataline During initiation a group of freshmen dance in senior court. This fund raiser brought much spirit to the school and to the sports teams Tracy Bernard was elected sophomore attendant for the Homecoming festivities More school changes took place with Mr Cleaveland s resigna- tion as high school principal and Mr Delisle s appointment as acting principal. In the spring we sponsored a sophomore dance featuring the band Nemesis As a very hectic year ended, we looked forward to being upperclassmen in the fall 105 Junior Year Our junior year was one of great excitement. The time had finally come to think seriously about college and career choices. Frank Sataline, Ed Scheer, Beth Kucharczyk and Leslie Young led the class with a new advisor, Mr. James Day. Our first junior class fund raising pro- ject was a tag sale. This fund raiser was quickly followed by our Berlin Fair booth. Later in the fall Robin Bickley was elected junior homecoming attendant. In October we received our class rings. Shortly before Thanksgiving principals were again changed, and Mr. Thomas Galvin was hired as Berlin High’s Chief Administrator. In the spring our long-awaited Junior Prom was held on March 10, 1978, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Meriden. The theme of the prom was Always and For- ever.” At the close of our junior year, we looked forward to our senior year and its special privileges. Hubbard 145 Mr. Day, When you first became our class advisor two years ago, you told us that you would help us to make decisions but would not make decisions for us. Any suc- cesses or failures that we experi- enced would be our own respon- sibility. Indeed this has been the case. You have provided us with your careful guidance. Our suc- cesses have been many, and our failures few You saw us through major class activities, such as Junior Prom, Berlin Fair booths, Senior Ball, and all of our other projects. Your concern for our class as well as your devotion to your teaching and sports activities have been an inspiration to those who know you well. It is our hope that you have many fond memo- ries of the class of 79 as we have of you, our class advisor. This student organization, including the Drill Team and the Color Guard, performs commendably at every game. Before every home basketball game the cheerleaders prepare to spur their team on to a victory. The captain of the Redcoats leads the team through the hoop to begin another excit- ing game The Berlin High Redcoats have always been proud of their teams. Basket- ball is just one of the various sports which draws many students as partici- pants and as spectators The hard-working Redcoat football team awaits the start of the game and is encouraged by the cheerleaders. 159 AMCO PRECISION TOOL, INC.
