The Staff of the 1978 Lamp proudly dedi- cates its yearbook to Mr. Donald Bates in recognition of his outstanding community achievement, dedication, and involvement. Mr. Bates, a teacher of mathematics, has de- signed the computer math program and helped organize the Math Team at Berlin High School. He also coaches the Berlin High School Varsity and Junior Varsity Golf teams. His coaching efforts have resulted in many high caliber players and championship teams. Further recognition of Mr. Bates talent as a golf coach is his being selected The National Golf Coach of the Year by the National High School Coaches Association. Mr. Bates has also contributed much time and effort serving on the Park and Recreation Commission in Berlin. Through his unselfish dedication, Mr. Bates has contributed greatly to both Berlin High School and the Berlin community. We wish him continued success. 2 ACHIEVEMENT That man is a success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much; who gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children; who has filled his niche and accom- plished his task; who leaves the world better than he found it . . . Robert Louis Stevenson The world is a looking-glass, and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face. Frown at it, and it in turn will look sourly at you; laugh at it and with it, and it is a jolly, kind companion. William Makepeace Thackeray Drop a pebble in the water, And its ripples reach our far; And the sunbeams dancing on them May reflect them to a star. Give a smile to someone passing. Thereby making his morning glad; It may greet you in the evening When your own heart may be sad. Do a deed of simple kindness; Though its end you may not see. It may reach, like widening ripples, Down a long eternity. Joseph Norris Every soul that touches yours — Be it the slightest contact — Gets therefrom some good; Some little grace; one kindly thought; One aspiration yet unfelt; One bit of courage For the darkening sky; One gleam of faith To brave the thickening ills of life; One glimpse of brighter skies — To make this life worthwhile And heaven a surer heritage. George Eliot 7 ACADEMICS Why Teach? They ask me why I teach, and I reply: Where would I find more splendid company? There sits a statesman. Strong, unbiased, wise, Another later Webster, Silver-tongued, And there a doctor Whose quick, steady hand Can mend a bone, Or stem a lifeblood ' s flow. A builder sits beside him- Upward rise The arches of a church he builds, wherein That minister will speak the word of God, And lead a stumbling soul to touch the Christ. And all about a less gathering Of farmers, merchants, teachers. Laborers, men Who work with man and vote and build And plan and pray Into a great tomorrow. And I say, I may not see the church, Or hear the words, Or eat the food their hands will grow And yet ... I may, And later I may say, I knew the lad, And he was strong; Or weak, or kind, or proud Or bold. I knew him once. But then he was a boy. Sunny bright mornings And pale moonlit nights Keep me from feeling alone Now, I ' m learning to fly And this freedom is like Nothing that I ' ve ever known I ' ve seen the bottom And I ' ve been on top But mostly I ' ve lived in between And where do you go When you get to the end of your dream? Once in a vision I came on some woods And stood at a fork in the road My choices were clear Yet I froze with the fear Of not knowing which way to go One road was simple Acceptance of life The other road offered sweet peace When I made my decision My vision became my release. Dan Fogelberg Freshmen Class officers: Brenda Stabert, Treasurer; Mr. Stanley Brittingham, Class Advisor; Kim Kuhnly, Secretary. Standing: Tina Simeone, President; Sue Kristopik, Vice-President The Class of 1981 joined the hustle and bustle of Berlin High on September 7, 1977. Tina Simeone, Sue Kristopik, Brenda Stabert and Kim Kuhnly were elected class officers. Under the advisorship of Mr. Stanley Brittingham the freshmen year began to take shape. Their fund raising drive was kicked off with the traditional magazine drive which was an enormous success. The single day allotted for Initiation was a day enjoyed by most and carefully observed by the school administration and the Board of Education. It began early in the morning with the worried freshmen, dressed as Supermen and Wonder Women, being taken to area restaurants for breakfast by their Big Brothers and Sisters. As the day progressed, the freshmen learned that Initiation is a fun event designed to bring the oldest and newest members of Berlin High together, and they even enjoyed performing the antics demanded of them. Freshmen and Seniors both felt a twinge of disappointment when the two o ' clock bell sounded the end of the school day and the festivities. Initiation was officially closed with the annual Senior Court and dance. Kim Valentine was chosen to represent the Freshmen class at Homecoming. A farewell breakfast for the Seniors ended a very hectic first year for the class of 1981. 28 FIRST ROW: Debbie Paradis, Diane Dietrich. If you have anything really valua- ble to contribute to the world, it will come through the expression of your own personality . . . . . . that single spark of divinity that sets you off and makes you different from ev- ery other living creature. Bruce Barton 47 ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS I have thought of beaches, fields, Tears, laughter. I have thought of homes put up — And blown away. I have thought of meetings and for Every meeting of good-by. I have thought of stars going alone. Orioles in pairs, sunsets in blundering Wistful deaths. I have wanted to let go and cross over To a next star, a last star. I have asked to be left a few tears And some laughter. — Carl Sandburg Homecoming Homecoming 1978 saw the Redcoats beat South Catholic and subsequently finish their season with a 9-1 record. During the halftime festivities Home- coming Queen Sandi Ziegler and her court were presented to the more than 3,000 people in attendance. Mayor Ar- thur B. Powers presented Sandi with a bouquet of roses as her attendants. Sen- ior Janice Gimpl, Junior Robin Bickley, Sophomore Judy Lynn, and Freshman Kim Valentine looked on. At the dance, the 1977 Homecoming Qu een, Kathy Pagella, crowned Sandi in a touching ceremony. The entire night had a festive mood about it with dancing and socializ- ing. A good time was enjoyed by all. Following her crowning, Sandi Ziegler and Joe Kropf pose for a portrait. Mark Beal and Jo-Ellen Hinchliffe enjoy Kim Valentine, Judy Lynn, and their dates await the first dance, a dance together. Robin Bickley and Steve Adams make their appearance at the dance. Steve Bonaiuto, Renee Roche, Tracy Bernard, and Mark Kiniry do some chit chatting. Dale Schiffert and her date talk with some friends. The very stunning Sandi Ziegler is escorted by a stunned Rob Sylvester. Senior attendant Janice Gimpl and Jeff Trudelle watch the proceedings at halftime. Spirit Week During Spirit Week all four classes competed to show which class actual- ly had the most spirit. Each class had its own hallway and could decorate it in any manner that they wanted. Many students in each class strived to show they had the most spirit by cov- ering the walls with posters which urged support for the football, cross- country, and girls ' field hockey teams. The culmination of the week was the motorcade and Pep Rally. Although rather wet, the motorcade still drove through town to show the superior spirit of students at Berlin High. In the gymnasium the competition was close, especially between seniors and juniors. In the end the seniors won the Spirit Trophy much to their delight. Eric Nielsen poses in front of some senior art work during Spirit Week. Barry Bradley and Bob Lasky lead the seniors in a spirit cheer. Ra y Revoir and Pete Tirinzoni getting psyched for Saturday ' s Bill Carlson addresses the Pep Rally crowd, game at Middletown. Robin, Eric, and Billy are awestruck after the senior class wins the Senior football players join in the frenzy. Rally ' s Spirit Trophy. Donna Calderone supervises two of her classmates as they place a poster. A pair of optimistic freshmen show off a part of their Spirit Week display. One hallway is adorned with brilliant artwork to arouse spirit. Initiation A long-standing tradition at Berlin High, Initiation, was held for only one day this year. It still retained its fun for the seniors as well as for the frosh. Although some fresh- men may have been reluctant at first, when it was all over, they held one thing in com- mon with all other students at Berlin High — the experience of Initiation. Senior Court was held to try those freshmen ac- cused of committing crimes against seniors. The master of ceremonies was, of course, the one and only Mole who presided absolutely over the senior gangsters. Howard Odishoo readies for a kill. Hope Klein utilizes two frosh as an armchair. Dave Ferraguto and Phil Lund get their collective heads together. Two supermen join forces before breakfast. The Mole disciplines a fiesty freshman. Bob Gibeley, Jeff Blair, and Tom Psillas seem wary under the watchful eye of Mr. Delisle. Tracey Bickley places a second egg for Barry Wright to roll. You cannot have your cake and eat it too, Mr. Delisle. Not quite the Rockettes, but they ' ll do. Jon Keezing exercises one of his senior privileges. Holiday Dance Margot Johnson and Randy Rasemus do some high-stepping. Funny how photographers attract everyone ' s attention. Christine Bouchard seems to approve of the music. One of December ' s big high- lights was the third annual Holiday Dance sponsored by the Berlin High School Girls ' League. Guided by advisor, Mrs. Emile Yukna, preparations were made and deco- rations were strung around the gym for the dance. Music was pro- vided by Nightbird, which played songs that were pleasing not only to the students but also to the chap- erones. Refreshments prepared by members of the League were served to the famished dancers. The dance was successful due to the efficiency and dedication of the Girls ' League. Mary Lupia and her date pause for a moment to pose for a picture. Debbie Martin and Bob Gorneault enjoy each other ' s company. Mrs. Yukna receives a poinsettia from the Girls ' League officers. Holiday Concert The Holiday Concert was held at McGee School. A large crowd was on hand to hear the Berlin High School Concert Band directed by Mr. Paul Karam. Also performing during the concert were the Madrigals and the Concert Chorus. The Berlin High School Concert Band Bob Facey prepares to lead the Concert Chorus in a selection. The Madrigals: Kathy Warren, Dawn Speer, Nancy Fuller, Kim Davis, Janet Stohmal, Michele Perreault, Linda Elliot, Cindy Pizzo, and Advisor Mr. Bruni. Kim Krause and Arlene Gamelin offer each other some moral support prior to the concert. The Drama Productions On December 2nd and 3rd, Mrs. Colaiacovo ' s 1976-1977 Creative Writing class tried something new; a play competition of four one act plays, each written by students. The production, called Comedies etc., was judged by teachers from Berlin High and Central Connecti- cut State College. A play called The Groomless Wedding, written by Lisa Mongillo, won the competi- tion. Rachel Grant and Tom Woodruff take a breather during dress rehearsal. Diane Fagan rehearses her lines. Sue Wunderlee and Beth Owen were finally caught by Sue Wunderlee enjoys a magazine, the fuzz. The bride frantically tries to find her groom. Tom Woodruff, the banker, checks his figures. Soprano Diana Reed gives her rendition of an aria from La Traviata. Howard Sprout sings The Impossible Dream from Man of La Mancha. YEARBOOK The 1978 yearbook staff experienced many difficul- ties in publishing this year ' s LAMP. A large staff rapidly dwindled to a few responsible people who worked hard and spent many long hours late into the night meeting deadlines. Two missed deadlines, the loss of many copy sheets, and the mysterious disappearance of pictures provided unwanted challenges for the staff. In addition to these challenges, there were always surprises. The publishing company ' s elimination of yearbook services, the disappearance and miraculous reappearance of fifty-three completed pages, and, most surprising of all, the thirty-six seniors who showed up for the LAMP staff picture, continually kept the staff wondering what to expect next. In spite of all obstacles, staff perseverance and the unfailing aid and direction of Mrs. Miklos saw the completion of this book. It is we, and we are it. It did not kill Coach Pasco, and his team was in great shape. Jeff Vibes Vibert captained the team and led them to a 11-3 record. The highlight of the cross-country sea- son is the North West Conference meet in Canton. This year the Berlin harriers all ran great races at the meet. Football The reformed Berlin Redcoats under the leadership of tri-captains Eric T. Nielsen, Joe Kropf, and Steve Bonaiuto finished their season with a 9-1 record. After losing a heartbreaker to neartown rival Middletown, the Redcoats, with strong direction from head mentor Al Pelligrinelli, came back and won nine consecutive games, a record for any Berlin team. Never in the history of Berlin have so many fans attended football games. Fans drove many miles to see away games, where Berlin fans often outnumbered the home- town fans. The 1977-78 Redcoats achieved great distinction by winning the WTIC team of the week and qualifying for the Class M State Championship play-offs. This was the first championship game for any Berlin football team, and it created an uproar in the town. Berlin practiced hard and went into the game with enthusiasm. Their opponent was Shoreline Champion Hand High, who had a record of 23 straight wins. Berlin emotions and hopes were high, and Berlin played the best game ever. The lead was exchanged from one team to the other, but the game ended with Berlin losing a heartbreaker, 1 6- 20. The Berlin fans knew that the Redcoats did the best job they possibly could and brought their team all the way to the State Championship play-offs. Tom Mole Scalise takes a break on the sidelines. Let ' s get him fellas. Congratulations to the 1977-78 Redcoat football team for being the first team in the history of Berlin High School to compete in the State Class M Championship Game. The Redcoats battled equally tough Hand High School of Madison at Fontana Field in Southington on December 3, 1977. Both teams vied for the lead throughout the game, and the outcome was not deter- mined until the last few minutes of play. The final score was Hand 20 — Berlin 1 6. Coach Pelligrinelli ' s team put in an outstanding performance. Don Polanski sends Hand ' s quarterback to the ground. Coach Pelligrinelli ' s total dedication to the coaching of the Berlin High School football team has brought pride and excitement to the Berlin community. Under his direction the 1977-78 football team compiled a 9-1 record and played in the State Championship game. For his outstanding work. Coach Pelligrinelli was awarded the Class M High School Football Coach of the Year by the New England Chapter of the National Foun- dation of the Hall of Fame. The 1977-78 football team thanks Coach Pelligrinelli for teaching them to win as well as to lose with pride. His sportsmen are always gentlemen first. Coach Pelli- grinelli will always be remembered and missed by his players and friends of the Class of 1978. 75 Ann Benson goes after the ball. Captain Becky Dickinson. Field Hockey This year the Field Hockey Team had both a Varsity and a Junior Var- sity team competing in the North West Conference. Co-captains were Becky Dickinson and Darlene Miller. The team showed much im- provement over the previous year. Their record of 1 - 1 1 -2 does not re- flect the effort of the team, for they lost most of their contests by only one goal. A clear example of the closeness of the field hockey sea- son was the game against Lewis Mills, one of the better teams in the Conference. The girls held Mills scoreless throughout the game un- til, with only four minutes left of play. Mills pushed a goal past Ber- lin’s defense and won the game 1-0. Coach Lynn Arnold summed up the season by saying that she is proud of her girls and is looking for- ward to a better season next year. Although they got off to a slow start due to illness and injuries, the Red- coats soon put together an im- pressive 6 game winning streak. The most exciting game this year was played against Wilcox Tech at home. Berlin was down by 12 points with only two and one half minutes of play remaining. They battled back to a tie score which sent the game into overtime. After exchang- ing hoops for the three minute overtime period, the score was again tied. The game then went into double overtime. The ' Coats pulled away and finally won the game by a score of 79-74. Coach George Hall summed up his team ' s effort by saying, I ' m proud of this team. Girls ' Basketball The 1977-78 Girls ' Basketball Team, under the guidance of Coach Janet Kelly and assistant Coach Linda Bulduc, completed their season with a 1 1-6 record. Although the team was oversized by archrival Middletown, the girls defeated them in both contests. Captain Nancy Grib scored twenty- seven points during the first game to pace Berlin to a 56-47 win. The second confrontation was a see- saw battle. A steal, a key basket by Lisa Conti, and a well played de- fense by the entire team paved the way for a 34-33 victory for Berlin. On February 22, 1978, the Girls ' Varsity team played Stonington at Colchester in the State Tourna- ments. The girls played an exciting game with the final score 41-38 Stonington. Wrestling In their second year of varsity com- petition, the Wrestling Team did well enough to place fourth in the annual Northwest Conference Tournament held in the Berlin High gym on Febru- ary 1 1, 1978. Carlo Zovich won the conference championship, and Bob Gibley, Bill McBriarty, and Aldo Zo- vich were runner-ups in their respec- tive weight classes. Head Coach Bill Riccio and Assistant Coach Jim Day led the team to a winning record of 7-6-1 with hard work and discipline. Captained by Bob Gibley and Aldo Zo- vich, the matmen learned what it is like to be dedicated to a sport and what it is like to starve in order to make weight. They did not exactly en- joy all the push -ups and running which was necessary to get in shape, but they gained a sense of competi- tion and friendship that comes with working hard and helping each other through a successful season. Growing together, then drifting apart. Always an ending and now a new start. At graduation we all grow nearer And all of us seem so much dearer. And as we say our final goodbye, One last embrace and one more cry. A keep in touch and a promise I will. A remember when, but better still. This is what ' s said as we go our own way. LAURA ROLLINS What a fairyl Freshman Year Class officers: Jeff, Carolyn, Rob, and Bill. Principal Long — first of many. Joe, Billy, and Bev sing up a storm at initiation. We began the first of our four years at Berlin High School eagerly anticipating the many challenges which awaited us. Our first con- frontation was the traditional fresh- man initiation for which we dressed as hillbillies. We found our- selves waiting on the much feared seniors and performing a multitude of crazy antics. The class officers for our freshman year were Bill Carlson, president; Rob Sylvester, vice-president; Jiff Vibert, treasur- er; and Carolyn Conti, secretary. They provided us with strong lead- ership through a confused period of crowded classrooms and con- gested hallways as the school began its renovation. As Home- coming closed the football season, Janice Gimpl was elected fresh- man attendant. Our freshman year passed quickly, and soon we bid good-bye to the seniors. Martian waitresses served them their fare- well breakfast in the alien setting of outerspace. At the end of the year, Doctor Long bid farewell to Berlin High School. Builders construct the new gym. Enthusiastic freshmen show their spirit. W W W Our acting principal Mr. Delisle. Chris as sophomore attendant. Even now, Gary ' s mouth is open. Sophomore Year The class officers lounge around. Our sophomore year began in ut- ter confusion because of school construction and renovation. After almost two years of work, the new addition to the school was finally opened. We all felt like freshmen again as we explored the new building. Bill Carlson, Jeff Vibert, and Carolyn Conti returned as class officers, and Eric Nielsen was elect- ed the new vice-president. Chris- tine Bouchard was c hosen as sophomore attendant for the Homecoming celebration. Acting principal Mr. Donald Delisle was re- placed by Mr. George Cleveland. The year ended with our class members awaiting the prestige of being considered upperclassmen in our junior year. Cathy and Mark at Homecoming. Kathy checks out the score. 99 The Mole is our cutest cheerleader. Junior Year Our junior year proved to be very exciting and eventful. Bill Carlson, Carolyn Conti, and Jeff Vibert re- turned to lead the class, and Rob Sylvester joined the officers as vice-president. Our class demon- strated its spirit and strength by chanting Mother Goose nursery rhymes in order to tie the seniors for Most Class Spirit at the pep rally. Soon it was Homecoming, and Cindy Knopf was chosen as junior attendant. Our junior prom was held at Aquaturf in Southington on March 26, 1977. Liz Ward reigned as queen, and Laura Alberti and Robin McNamara were her attendants. The evening proved to be memora- ble as everyone enjoyed dancing to the music of Onyx. Mr. Cleaveland resigned as prin- cipal, and once again Mr. Delisle was appointed acting principal. Our junior year concluded with everyone anxiously awaiting our final year at Berlin High School. Rob blows the whistle on the class. 100 Robin and John at the junior prom. Senior Year Our long-awaited senior year finally be- gan. Bill Carlson, Rob Sylvester, Eric Niels- en, Carolyn Conti, and Robin McNamara worked hard as class officers to make the year run smoothly and successfully. Fresh- man initiation was one of the first events of the year. During initiation frightened fresh- men, dressed as super-heroes, treated us with the respect we demanded. With the theme Alice in Wonderland, we won the pep rally spirit award for the second consecutive year. Our senior year saw arrival of still an- other principal, Mr. Thomas Galvin, who as- sumed the school ' s top seat. Homecoming arrived with much en- thusiasm over our championship football team. Sandi Ziegler reigned as queen, and Janice Gimpl was the senior attendant in the homecoming court. Our senior ball was on May 1 9 at the Glas- tonbary Country Club. This event made class members begin to feel the days slip by as graduation came closer and closer. The year concluded with a series of events. First the class of 1982 served sen- iors a farewell breakfast. This was followed by the distribution of class awards, year- books, and caps and gowns. The final event, commencement at Welte Auditorium, was followed by a crazy senior banquet at Aqua- turf. We left Berlin High School with many fine memories of a long, worthwhile four years. Your great capacity to laugh in good times and keep smiling through bad times has taught us how to work to- gether. Each class begins its freshmen year with an advisor who is asked to give his time and understanding to help the class through its high school years. The success or failure of this class is depend- ent upon its advisor. We, as a class, have been very successful. The success we have achieved is a reflection of the man who helped us attain it. You have given so much of yourself in everything we have done. Because of this, our class activities such as fund-rai- sing, pep rallies, junior prom, and senior ball are events which have left us with many happy memories. May the future bring you the happiness you deserve. All our love. The Class of 1978 138 Humor — the ability to laugh at life — is right at the top with love and communication in the hier- archy of our needs. Humor has much to do with pain; it exaggerates the anxieties and absurdities we feel, so that we gain distance and, through laughter, relief.
