Berlin High School Berlin, Connecticut 1 Compassion All people are born With the same basic parts. We all have arms and legs, And most a little smarts. But there are those more gifted. They have something more Than just the simple ability To see that two plus two is four. They have that something extra. It is with them from the start. The deep feeling compassion, Enclosed within their hearts. Their main concern is not for themselves, But instead for those of friends. Their gift of simply listening Is the greatest one to send. These people will stay by you, Like sweetness upon a rose, To hear out all your problems And help you ease your woes. We cannot say enough about them. These people with hearts of gold. Their beauty is never ending; Their compassion will never grow old. These people of whom we speak Are a rare and vanishing breed. They abide by their high standards As if it were their creed. It is a true pity That these people are so few. We know of only one such person. The one and only you. Dan Marsh 2 We, the staff of the 1977 Lamp, take great pride in dedicating our yearbook to Stanley Sangeloty. During his eighteen years as a guidance counselor at Berlin High School, he has advised many students on career as well as personal decisions. In doing so, he has shown sensitivity to each student ' s needs. His honest concern for people has earned him the admiration of both his colleagues and his students. We wish him continued success and happiness. 3 The shuffle of feet, the slamming of lockers, the ring- ing of bells, and a welcome hello . . 4 V 8 Everyday is much like the day before, except for the unique condition that what is not quite the same makes all the difference. 9 Creativity is the coming together of separate ideas to form what has never been formed before. 10 Friends come with time and leave with memories. We all come with questions and leave with answers. What can happen in a day from sunrise to sunset from happy to sad. Mr. Sebastian J. Amato, Guidance Counselor Mr. Stanley Sangeloty. Marie Simeone WE THE REFORMISTS We, the Boy ' s State delegates of the town of Berlin, have witnessed enough as pertains to the convention system We feel that Boy ' s State, oth- er than the continuously underhanded wheeling and dealing, is a most rewarding learning experi- ence. However, we came here ardently armed with high moralistic principles and ideals which have been totally and unjustly rinsed from our minds We feel that hypocrisy is being promoted by the present Federalist and Nationalist parties rather than moral and ethical politicking We have observed the proceedings of our respective party meetings and mutually agree that we are being unwillfully imbibed with the type of politics that is constantly criticized in our present day so- ciety. We also feel that we have been pressured and continually induced by a certain centralized elite which obviously possesses the political re- sources and influence at this convention. To con- tinue in this vein would demoralize us and distort our presently ethical views of democracy as it is practiced in our American institution. In conclud- ing, we, the concerned delegates of Boy s State, are seeking the support and inclusion of any and all mutually dissatisfied citizens of the state who will seriously devote themselves to what we feel is a diligent effort to remedy the ills of the present party system. 41 F.B.L.A.: FIRST ROW Laurie Fiske, Faith Trowbridge. On February 17, 1977, after only fifteen months, Mr. Cleaveland left Berlin High. In that short period of time, he established a strong philosophy of humane ideals from which Berlin High School can continue to create a positive educational atmos- phere. Mr. Cleaveland, thank you not only for improving the quality of education at Berlin High but also for uniting the various groups of people in our small community. We wish you con- tinued success as a true educa- tor and friend. Their strength can be attributed to the consistent leadership of class officers: Bill Carlson, Rob Sylvester, Carolyn Conti and Jeff Vibert, and the advisorship of Mr Thomas Warburton. Their first show of strength came during Spirit Week with the help of Dr. Suess. The juniors tied the seniors for showing the most school spirit. The spirit of the Junior Class never faltered even when their class rings arrived three months late. Cindy Knopf was chosen as the Junior Homecoming Attendant. The highlight of their year was the Junior Prom held on March 26, 1977, at the Aqua Turf in Southington. The Class of 1978 is looking forward to a rewarding senior year. The results of our first election of class officers were Lori Reisner, President, Angela Calian- dri, Vice-president, Marie Simeone, Secretary, and Cheryl Tomasi, Treasur- er. Miss Lenore Kainik was appointed as our class advisor. Our school spirit was high as we decorated the halls with Mother Goose during the 1973 Spirit Week. Dressed in curlers, paja- mas, pincurls, and nightgowns, we did everything but sleep through our Fresh- men Initiation. Mary Beth Higgins was chosen to represent the class at Home- coming. First year fund raising activi- ties included the magazine drive and an Easter bake sale. At the close of our freshmen year we bid farewell to the Class of 1974 with a down-home coun- try breakfast and a dance. Alan Pipkin enjoys a ride? Mr. Dorsett enjoys a marriage proposal from Helen Psillas. Chuck Campbell, Roger Miller, and Tom Miele do their best to keep the cafeteria spotless. A little blush helps Glenn Basile maintain his glowing appearance. Freshman Class Officers: Lori Reisner, Angela Caliandri, Marie Simeone, Cheryl Tomasi. An ice storm leaves beauty and destruction. The freshman class hosts the senior class at a Farewell Breakfast. The high school renovation closes many sections of the old building. Sophomore Year Having completed one successful year at Berlin High School, we felt that we knew all there was to know. We watched the Class of 1978 transform into hillbillies during their Freshmen Initiation. Thankful that it was not the Class of 1977 being initiated, we sat back and enjoyed the initiation. Presi- dent Roger Tangney, Vice-president Julie Waters, Secretary Marie Simeone and Treasurer Cheryl Tomasi led the class. Our 1974 Pep Rally theme was The Greatest Show on Earth, and we dressed as clowns, aerobats, and ring- masters. Colleen Hartney was chosen to represent the class at Homecoming. Once again our class showed its unity as we sponsored a candy drive to help an injured classmate, Erin Costello. A sophomore carnival, a dance featuring Mannequin, and glass recycling were our class fund ra isers. In the spring mini-courses gave us a well- earned break from classes. At the close of the 1974-75 school year, we looked forward to our junior year and the opening of the new high school addi- tion. 94 Colleen Hartney, escorted by Bill Knapsack, represents the class as Sophomore Homecoming Attendant. Naomi Blank and Lori Cimino are surprised by the photographer at the Homecoming Dance. Sophomore Class Officers: Cheryl Tomasi, Roger Tangney, Julie Waters, and Marie Simeone. Angela Caliandri and Karen Albert await their classmates at the Sophomore Dance. Doug Shaheen, Karen Albert, and Garry Williams rehearse their scene. Debbie Staszewski completes her routine on the uneven parallel bars. Registration for Mini-Course is a hectic experience. Mr. Dorsett signs his resignation. 95 Junior Class Officers: Marie Simeone, Nancy Baccaro is the Junior Class Cheryl Tomasi, Greg Kayko, and Roger Homecoming Attendant. Tangney. Junior Year September, 1975, saw many great changes at Berlin High School. We re- turned to a new addition and a new principal, Mr. George B. Cleaveland. The Junior Class leaders were Presi- dent Roger Tangney, Vice-president Greg Kayko, Secretary Marie Simeone, and Treasurer Cheryl Tomasi. It was a year in which a great number of future plans were made. Class rings were dis- tributed in October. Nancy Baccaro represented the class at Homecoming. On Valentine ' s Day the Junior Prom, You Make Me So Very Happy, was held at De Pasquale ' s. Debbie Ahlquist reigned as Junior Prom queen with Theresa Dukes and Jennifer Carlson as her attendants. In the spring eighteen members of the Class of 1977 were inducted into the National Honor Socie- ty. Boys ' and Girls ' State candidates were chosen in March. The year ended with plans for senior year underway. Bruce DeFelice and his date arrive at the Homecoming Dance. Nicki Siriotis and Michele Vigra work at the Junior Booth at the Berlin Fair. Mrs. Schack and Roger Tangney distribute class rings The first Girls ' League Holiday Dance is a great success. Debbie Ahlquist is crowned Junior Prom Queen by her escort, Doug Anson. The dance floor is crowded at the Junior Prom. Greg Kayko and Roger Tangney usher at the Honor Society Induction. Guests await the start of the dancing at the Junior Prom. Principal George Cleaveland inducts new Honor Society members. 97 Seniors welcome the school to Sesame Street during Spirit Week. An enthusiastic Senior crowd creates a deafening cheer during the Pep Rally. Caroline Larson, Line Adams, and Caron Hutchinson masquerade as Sesame Street characters. Lisa Zucchi testifies during Senior Court proceedings. Homecoming Queen Kathy Pagella is escorted by Senior Class President Roger Tangney. Senior Year The anticipation over, our senior year finally arrived. President Roger Tang- ney, Vice-president Ed Klotz, Vice-presi- dent Angelo Fiducia, Secretary Marie Simeone, and Treasurer Roger Austin provided the strong leadership that we needed for a busy senior year. After a year ' s absence, Spirit Week returned. The Sesame Street Seniors shared the title of most school spirit with the juniors. The senior class treasury was bo lstered by the profits from a well-or- ganized senior concession during the football season. Kathy Pagella was crowned 1976 Homecoming Queen; Charlene Giardino was the senior at- tendant. Senioritis infected earlier than usual, but the warmth of spring, after one of the coldest winters on record, gave seniors new spirit. On May 6, 1977, the Senior Ball was held at the Hartford Hilton. The close of our senior year was marked by a farewell break- fast hosted by the Class of 1980. We leave Berlin High School with good memories of classes, activities, and friends. Senior Class Officers: Angelo Fiducia, Roger Austin, Marie Simeone, Ed Klotz, and Roger Tangney. Mayor Powers is dunked in the Senior Class Booth at the Berlin Fair. You have generously given up your time to help us through all of our last minute details and minor catastrophies. From car washes to proms, you have always had time for us.
