Dedication We, the Class of 1976, are proud to dedicate our yearbook to Charles Thomas Downer. A teacher of science for more than twenty years in Berlin High School, he enjoys the respect, admiration and friendship of his colleagues and many students. His broad knowledge of the scientific world and his concern for his students’ achievement chal- lenged them to learn, to inquire, and to experi- ment. 2

Mr. Downer’s life has been one of varied interests and dedication to the welfare of others. Following service in the U.S. Army during World War II, he completed a bachelor’s degree at Bowling Green State University in Ohio and did graduate work at the University of Maryland. He was appointed a science teacher at Berlin High School in 1952. Nature study, Indian lore, crafts, jewelry making, camping and fishing are some of Mr. Downer’s hobbies. He has shared his interests with others. The successful Berlin High School chess teams were organized and coached by him. He has been affiliated with Boy Scout- ing for many years in a number of roles, including those of scoutmaster and camp counselor. He has lectured on the subjects of Berlin history and of Connecticut walk- ing trails. Many hours have been spent with his students studying the stars in the evening, hiking along nature trails on Saturdays, or teaching them gem cutting in his studio during a school recess. In March 1975, Mr. Downer had an unfortunate acci- dent which prevented him from further teaching. It is his love of life and competitive spirit which is helping him to recover. It can be said of Mr. Downer that no hour fails to include some time for someone else, no thought omits a concern for others, no possession goes unshared. It is fitting that the 1976 Lamp be dedicated to a person who has given so much of himself to others. 3
