MIA MCMAHON Yearbook Advisor COLLEEN COONEY LISA RACKLIFFE Literary Editors CHERYL GAFFNEY Cover Design Dedication We, the Class of 1976, are proud to dedicate our yearbook to Charles Thomas Downer. A teacher of science for more than twenty years in Berlin High School, he enjoys the respect, admiration and friendship of his colleagues and many students. His broad knowledge of the scientific world and his concern for his students’ achievement chal- lenged them to learn, to inquire, and to experi- ment. 2 Mr. Downer’s life has been one of varied interests and dedication to the welfare of others. Following service in the U.S. Army during World War II, he completed a bachelor’s degree at Bowling Green State University in Ohio and did graduate work at the University of Maryland. He was appointed a science teacher at Berlin High School in 1952. Nature study, Indian lore, crafts, jewelry making, camping and fishing are some of Mr. Downer’s hobbies. He has shared his interests with others. The successful Berlin High School chess teams were organized and coached by him. He has been affiliated with Boy Scout- ing for many years in a number of roles, including those of scoutmaster and camp counselor. He has lectured on the subjects of Berlin history and of Connecticut walk- ing trails. Many hours have been spent with his students studying the stars in the evening, hiking along nature trails on Saturdays, or teaching them gem cutting in his studio during a school recess. In March 1975, Mr. Downer had an unfortunate acci- dent which prevented him from further teaching. It is his love of life and competitive spirit which is helping him to recover. It can be said of Mr. Downer that no hour fails to include some time for someone else, no thought omits a concern for others, no possession goes unshared. It is fitting that the 1976 Lamp be dedicated to a person who has given so much of himself to others. 3 Opening it’s eyes to all the beauty of Nature surrounding it, the tiny bud unfolds. Absorbing all the light and warmth the sun has to offer, It expands and develops into a child of Nature. Reaching a total climax of beauty, the flower then surrenders to the comple- tion of another cycle of existence .... 4 Continuing our cycle of life, we pro- gress through new learning exper- iences as fragile, innocent beings sus- ceptable to many threatening obsta- cles. We grasp the understanding of life through relating to our environment and with our relationships with one Our high school cycle may now be completed, but the cycle of our lives will continue into eternity . . . 5 Dear Mrs. Bryers, How can we thank you for the four years of time, devotion and spirit you have given to our class! Since our Freshman year you have given us the incentive to work and to achieve as a class. There have been many close calls but you al- ways seemed to be there to help us to pull ourselves through. Don’t for- get those cold Saturday mornings at the Bottle Recycling Center or the last minute touch-ups on the Pep Rallies and Proms. But most of all don’t forget the Spirit of ’76 — we’ll never forget you . . . Love always, The Class of ’76. Academics Administration Mrs. Rosalind Ward, Registrar Jack R. Carlson Sophomores The Class of 1978 Under the direction of Bill Carlson, Carolyn Conti, Eric Nielson, and Jeff Vibert, the class has spent much of the year making future plans. The Activity Committee, composed of some sev- enty-five concerned Sophomores, met monthly to plan future class projects. The biggest fund raising project for this year was the Sophomore Class Dance which took place on March 19. In addition, the class ex- panded its treasury even further by means of a Flea Market and a “Midnight Movie”. Looking into the future, the Class of ’78 an- ticipates a mid-September arrival of their trea- sured class rings. The booth at the Berlin Fair was their first big money maker. Other functions such as the Junior Dance in April, a Magic Show, a Communal Fund Raiser in March, and Easter Bake Sale, and a Memorial Weekend Car-Wash were other class activities. The highlight of the Junior year for most Juniors was the Junior Prom held on February 14, Valentine’s Day, 1976. Along with the theme “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy” were the colors of ma- roon, pink and white. The evening proved to be a wonderful night for all who attended. We’ve become firmer, quieter, Warmer, only to find we wish to Speak out; To be free to express ourselves In words or art or Music or love. We’ve seen the sun unfolding life, And realize that today is soon yesterday. And there will be a new tomorrow. We smile just a bit, Remembering all our good times, All our friends . . . And we find that no friendship Can cross our path, without Leaving some mark on it forever. 44 • s ' - Activities Yearbook . . A very special experience learn- ing to work as one . . . putting forth all that we have, time, effort, concern . . . at times it seemed as if we would never reach our goal . . but we did, proving it by our final results. This yearbook would not be com- plete without mentioning one more very special person, our yearbook ad- visor, Mrs. McMahon. She started us on our way and was always there to brighten our spirits when we were up to our ears in deadlines. Thanks for all your help; it is greatly appreciated. To Get A Good Job — Get A Good Education Initiation Garbed as Sheiks and Belly Dancers, the freshmen were throughly initiated into Berlin High School. With jewels in their navels, and turbans around their heads they were exposed to the merciless Seniors. They portrayed their talents in the areas of singing, dancing, begging, and lug- ging an armful of books. The climax of the week was the Orientation dance where the mighty Senior Court sen- tenced the freshmen to embarassing and funny perfor- mances. School Store Opening November 26th marked the grand opening of the school store, “Odds’n’Ends.” In its new room with plenty of space, we were all anxious to see what it would have to offer. It became an instant success, offering such things as candy, pens, other school needs, school shirts, jackets and jewelry. A large amount of students’ talents are displayed in various craft works. The highlight of the opening was the raffling of a 3-foot tall stuffed bird and a jacket. Tickets went fast, selling at a mere quarter. Everyone waited eagerly for the announce- ment of the winners. Two lucky people went home with the great prizes. Homecoming, A November 1st marked the date of Berlin High School’s annual affair, Homecoming. Charlene Cyr reigned as our Homecoming Queen with Senior Attendant; Cheryl Gaffney, Junior Attendant; Nancy Baccaro, Sophomore attendant; Chris Bouchard, and Freshmen Attendant; Laurie Adams. The afternoon ceremonies at the football game went well with the brisk autumn air bringing chills to our spines. The climax of the affair was the Homecoming Dance held that evening in the McGee Gym. Shades of blue set the mood while everyone Tradition danced to and enjoyed the music of “Onyx”. The height of the evening occured when the reigning queen Karen Nalewajek returned to re- linquish her crown to Charlene. It was an enjoyable evening and proved to be a great success to all those who devoted their time to the dance. On December 5th, 1975, the first activity in the new gym took place. It was the Honor Society Induction Ceremony. Twelve members of the senior class were inducted into this National organization. The in- troductory address was deliv- ered by Robert Herr, Presi- dent of the Berlin Chapter of the National Honor Society, and the Guest speaker was Mr. G. Cleaveland, Principal of Berlin High. A reception in the Media Center immediately fol- lowed the ceremony. 1975 proved to be a real “Premiere Year”. Not only did it mark the opening of the new school addition, but also the premiere of the Girl’s League Holiday dance. The dance, held on December 20 in the McGee Gym, was highlighted by the snowstorm. The weather helped to set the mood for the holiday dance. The gym was decorated in the Christmas spirit and showed the detailed work involved. Music was provided by Sextant. The dance proved to be a great success. “ Barefoot In The Park ” This years production of the annual drama club play was “Barefoot in the Park”, a comedy by Neil Simon. The play was presented on Feb. 5th and 7th at the McGee School Auditorium under the direction of Jeffrey Nielan. Dawn Nason and Jeff Trudelle headed the cast along with Maryann Trudelle, Gary Williams, Ralph Zovich, and Doug Shaheen. It proved to be a successful night for the drama club and an entertaining one for the audience. “Nothing great ms ever achieved without enthusiast’ — Emerson 69 Cross Country This year the cross-country team enjoyed its best season ever. For the first time in Berlin history the team qualified for the state meet held at Timberlin Golf Course. The Red- coat Harriers came extremely close to winning the Northwest Conference, loosing by one point to a strong Farmington team. With a 9-4 record and only 3 seniors graduating, the Redcoats have strong prospects for the state title next year. CROSS COUNTRY 1ST ROW: G. Brochu, J. Vibert, D. Staszewski, K. For me, this is the challenge that makes life worthwhile. — Robert Kennedy MAMMY — GONE WITH THE WIND SUSAN MARKS THE GODFATHER MIKE RINGROSE MAE WEST GERALDINE MATTERA 91 We began our four years at Berlin High as wide-eyed freshmen, as pleas of “Where’s the Math Lab” and “My ! $ locker is jammed!” echoed through the crowded halls. We elect- ed our first set of class officers, Jay Margnelli as president, Tony Kiniry as vice-president, Lisa Rackliffe as secretary and Cheryl Gaffney as trea- surer. With Mrs. Bryers as our class advisor we began our activities. First on the agenda was the Pep Rally, in which we looked ahead to our four years of school as “The Spirit of ’76.” When initiation came around we dressed ourselves as Gladys and Ty- rone. It was a real blast as we were left to the mercy of the Seniors. Mar- jorie Gimpl reigned as out Homecom- ing attendent in Debbie’s court. The basketball team carried away the Northwest Conference Trophy as we eagerly cheered them on. We wel- comed Mr. Edward Dorsett to our school as associate principal. Fund raising projects for our treasury in- cluded bottle recycling and a maga- zine drive — (Remember those But- tons!). Closing out the year we bid farewell to the seniors in Alice’s Res- Senior Class History: Freshmen Year Sophomore Year As know-it-all sophomores we had one year behind us as we watched the ding-a-ling freshmen being initiated. Jay Margnelli, Billy Yukna, Lisa Rackliffe and Cheryl Gaffney led the class. McDonald’s Land became the theme for the Pep Rally as we dressed as French Fries, Hamburgers and even Ronald McDonald. But to our disappointment the Seniors shouted their way to victory. Charlene Cyr represented us at Homecoming in Joyce’s court. The crowded hallways became too crowed as we fought for our new addition. Little did we know how long it would take, but everything turned out okay as the sophomore dance proved to be a real success. Once again the basketball team claimed the Northwest Conference champion- ship. We recycled more glass to boost our treasury. Mini-courses diverted our attention for one week as we learned to refinish furniture and change car tires. Construction began as we looked forward to a very interesting Junior Year. 1 Junior Year . . . Our junior year brought about many exciting events to be planned. We watched all the steel framing of our addition being put up and wondered if it would be finished by Spring. Once again Jay Margnelli lead the class with Stan Cop, Lisa Bucchi, and Cheryl Gaffney. We transformed the guidance lobby into a miniature Disney Land for the Pep Rally. Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and all of Disney’s characters helped us to portray our spirit in trying for the Trophy. We got our feet wet with the dunking booth at the Berlin Fair. As our first booth we raised money and had a lot of fun. Our long awaited rings came in November as we broke the tradition by handing them out at a pot luck supper in the Cafeteria. The Junior Dance followed. Janet Biondi was our Junior attendent at Homecoming. Arriving back from Christmas vacation we felt the full blow of Construction as once again we inquired, “Where’s the Math Lab?” Spring brought about the Junior Prom with the theme “Just You and Me”. We dined and danced to the music of Stonehedge, and Mindy Lougee reigned as our Queen. Donna Bober and Liz Lund appeared as her atten- dents. Mini-courses offered new and exciting studies for a week of relax- ation. The addition continued and so did our longing to be Seniors. Senior Year “I don’t believe it, you mean were finally Seniors!” Yes, the long awaited year was finally here, along with the Bicentennial, the new addition, and the new administration. The board of education began its search for a new principal when Dr. Long left the high school to become the town’s Education Coordinator. Meanwhile Mr. Delisle was acting principal. In early November the new princi- pal was chosen; Mr. Cleaveland. We opened the year with the traditional Senior Motorcade and truly showed our spirit. Jay, Stan, Becky, Patty, and Cheryl were our class officers. Then Freshman Orientation began. We had the freshman dress up as Sheiks and Bellydancers. The week ended as a real success. Homecoming ’75 saw Charlene as its queen and Cheryl as its Attendent. The Senior Concession Stand pulled in a lot of money for the class during football season. Along with the winter months came college application time. Senioritis seemed to be an epidemic within the class but most of us survived. Before we could blink the Senior Ball was here. Music was provided by Sunship. Debbie Ahlquist was crowned Queen with Jennifer Carlson and Theresa Dukes as attendants. It was a fun-filled evening for all who attended. Senior Ball The Grand Ballroom at the Hartford Hilton was the setting for this year’s Senior Ball. It was held on May 22, 1976. Our theme was “What a Wonderful Thing We Have,” with music provided by two bands. We dined to the music of “Zonkaraz” and later on danced to “The Rhines- tones”. Karen Ferro reigned as Queen with Linda Lavigne and Linda McDonald as attendants. It was an eventful and memorable evening for all. rn “Double your pleasure Double your fun!” Miss Emily Doolittle” Senior Class Play Under the direction and guidance of Mrs. Christine Colaiacovo, along with Betty Leszynski, the senior class launched their presentation of “The Tube”. It consisted of a series of televi- sion spoofs, such as “The Price is Al- most Perfect,” “The Mating Game,” “Mickey Mole,” “Trash,” “Spedical Center,” and “Rear Witness News.” Dis- playing their own creative talents by both writing and acting out the script, the students put on a very entertaining performance. . . . “But Mrs. “C”., we only have two weeks left” .... “You’re no good, Pop” ... “Oh Frank ... Oh Margaret” ... The Complications . . Pride “That’s right, only 69c a pound!” Class Night Class night took place on Thursday, June 17 in the school auditorium. Outstanding members of the class, both academically and socially, were honored at this time. Many scholarships and other awards were presented to students allowing members of the Class of “76” to further their educations. Senior Day The freshmen said good-bye to the seniors with the Nifty-Fifties breakfast. The atmosphere was hightened by the music of American Graffiti. After finish- ing many pancakes, juice, and rolls, a brief ceremony was held recognizing the editors of the yearbook, for the long hours and hard work they put into the “1976 Lamp”. Each editor was then pre- sented with a certificate. After the breakfast we proceeded to the audito- rium to pass out caps, gowns and year- books. Everyone scrambled around to exchange as many signatures as possi- ble. Graduation Graduation 1976 was held at Welte Hall, C. C. S. C. on Monday, June 21. Excitement and anxiety filled the minds of the graduates as they marched down the crowded aisles toward the stage.
