Sails Take The Wind Down this amber river we’ve been so long, ia 5 strained to the winds 1 • V ' which drove us where they willed • and we’ve been so long captives of the river with an invitation to the sky. Records were broken by weightman Bradley Olson and pole vaulters Keith Molnar and Bob Herr. Against the odds of no locker room, no track, and the necessity of changing beneath stairwells, the team came up with a tre- mendous 14-1 record. Mini-Courses Mini-Course week was again a success due to the hard work of many student council members. Money was raised for the week by the council’s running of a breakfast concession at school during the year. Hik- ing, backpacking, and fishing courses expanded their field trips, while the total range of classes was en- larged by such diverse course offerings as fencing and karate. Student and faculty talent was generously shared, and all enjoyed a break from the monotony of regular scheduling as, for one week, school became alive. Junior Prom The Junior Prom was held on April 12th at the Meriden Knights of Columbus hall. The mu- sic was provided by “Stonehenge”. The theme for the evening was “Just You and Me.” Mindy Lougee reigned as Queen with attendants Donna Bober and Elizabeth Lund. It was an evening of many happy memories. Senior Ball The Senior Ball was held on May 31st in the Grand Ballroom of the Hartford Hilton. The theme was “Stairway To Hea- ven” with music supplied by “Waterwitch”. Cindy Kaley reigned as Queen of the Ball with Lorna Gemmell and Cindy Tre- vethan as attendants. It was an exciting evening filled with plenty of good music, food, and dan cing. Showcase ' 75 The Senior Class, under the direction of. Kristine Johnson, made a theatrical inno- vation at B.H.S. with their presentation of “Showcase ’75”. Instead of a traditional full-length drama, the group presented a series of scenes from such well-known plays as “Of Mice and Men” and “Ar- senic and Old Lace” along with original material. These creative and humorous scenes included students “Making A Deal” for their High School Diploma, a Wind-up Kung Fu doll, and the Heavyweight Wrestling Championship of the World. Senior Day The Seniors enjoyed a “spaced out” morning, courtesy of the freshman class, as B.H.S. said goodbye to the Class of ’75. Following the Senior Farewell Breakfast, complete with mar- tians and unique pancakes, yearbooks were passed out. People rushed about exchanging signatures while, on Senior Court, the Class of ' 75 planted a new tree as a final gift to all future seniors. Class Night was held at the McGee School on Monday, June 16th, in honor of the academically outstanding members of the Class of 1975. New members were inducted into the National Honor Society. Finan- cial gifts, honorary certificates, and other awards were presented to deserving students from various local service and educational sources. Class Night Graduation Welte Hall, C.C.S.C., was the setting this year for the graduation of the Class of 1975. Jan and Pat’s speeches lent added inspiration to the evening as they considered the values of a futuristic educa- tion and of optimism. Relatives and friends gath- ered proudly as the nervous graduates strove to master the tricky dancesteps accompanying “Pomp and Circumstance”. The Senior Class held its last get together after Graduation at DePas- quale’s in Newington. Dancing followed the buffet supper with “Paul Walker’s Dream” providing the music. There were a few tearful moments as various members of the class made final farewells, presentations, and thank yous. Relaxed atmosphere and conversation proved a fitting end to four eventful years at Berlin High. We, the class of 1975, wish to dedicate our yearbook To Berlin High School — The old and the new. In everything we have done, we’ve always had your enthusiasm to keep us moving. It hasn’t always been easy — there have been plenty of discour- aging meetings, red tape, last minute runs to Woolworth’s and hurt prides, but we’ll honestly have to say that things have usually turned out fine. You must admit that being our advisor has never been bor- ing!! We don’t know how you do it, but you never seem to run out of energy. Thank you again and someday when you’ve fully recovered from your experi- ence with us, we hope that some other class will be lucky enough to have you as their advisor. Miss Janet E. They elected Bill Carl- son, Jeff Vibert, Rob Sylvester and Carolyn Conti as Class Officers. Soon after the Class of ' 78 was “oriented” to B.H.S. with lollipops, lipstick, hill- billy outfits and the Senior Song. The class united in a magazine drive which brought a sizeable amount of money into the treasury. They made substan- tial contributions to support Mini- Course Week, and put together an amazing paper chain for a local charity. After spring glass recycling and a car- wash, the Freshmen sponsored a fund- raising dance in June. The Junior Class began the year by turning the guidance lobby into a miniature Disney World for Spirit Week. They received their class rings (how much are they this year???) at a pot luck supper and ring ceremony — a very impres- sive evening. December brought glass recycling, and the class sponsored a Harlem Diplomats game. March came with the Junior Dance and a car wash to boost up the treasury. The Junior Prom was in April — “Just You and Me.” The Class of ’76 wrapped up a great year with plans for next year’s freshman orientation . The jury were barefooted and rode tricycles, while the judges came complete with machine guns and cigars. The unsuspecting freshmen were sentenced to hog calling, balloon shaving and putting cold spoons down their shirts. Homecoming Berlin celebrated Home- coming on Saturday, No- vember 16th. Initiation introduced us to B.H.S., along with white bobby socks, name ribbons, and “Beep Beep I ' m a Jeep”. Every- thing seemed much larger, and everyone’s hair was short. Mark, Lenny, Bob and Denise led the class through our first year. “Sesame Street” was our theme for Spirit Week. We sold magazines until we saw subscription forms in our sleep. Mrs. Corr retired this year from her post as Dean of Girls. Chris was our homecoming attendant to the Queen ' s Court. We joined “Seargent Pepper’s Lonley Hearts Club Band for the Variety Show in March. The Key Club, now the Service Club, sponsored a rousing game of Donkey Basketball. The Seniors then were so big, and four years seemed like forever. Having survived our Freshman year, we found our- selves Sophomores! During initiation, we sat back and watched all the little piggies being pursued by Seniors, happy that it wasn’t ourselves. Then Spirit Week came, and we dressed up as pirates and yelled ourselves hoarse, but the Seniors carried away the trophy anyway. We redemmed ourselves at the Basketball Pep Rally by win- ning the cheering contest. The Redcoat Basketball Team captured the Northwest Conference title under Coach Hall’s direction. Homecoming arrived, and Laura was our attendant to the Queen’s court. Dave. Mark, Terry and Bob led our class through a year of newspaper recy- cling, the Sophomore Dance, Carnival and stationery sales. 84 Miss Kelly’s Basketball Team came into being in 1973, marking Ber- lin High School’s first year of participation in girls’ interscholastic bas- ketball. We lost some fine teachers in this year including Mrs. Deming, Mr. Marticello, Mrs. Newquist and Mr. Marsele. Mr. Edward Dorset assumed his duties in Berlin as our Associate Principal. The theme of the Variety Show was “The Times They are A-Changing” complete with Elvis, South Pacific, The Shadow and The Roller Skating Figgle Twins. The Drama Club kept us entertained in the spring with their production of “Blithe Spirit.” Junior Year Hey! We ' re almost there! . PSAT. NMSQT, SAT, XQYZAT(?), Ku- der tests revealed to us our true callings in life (nuns and bricklayers?). Our Spirit Week theme was the Wizard of Oz complete with Munchkins. The tic-tac-toe dart game at the Berlin Fair put loads of money into our treasur- er’s waiting hands. Mike took over the presidency with Mark, Donna and Cathy behind him. The attire was nightgowns, slippers and hair curlers for initiation week. Pat was our homecoming attendant. G Vi We fought hard for the new addition, and in the wake of that victory we fought to “Save Our Tree!” The energy was contagious, and the Redcoat Basketball team had a serious case of it as they won the Northwest Confer- ence Crown for the second consecutive year. A few other people in the school found some energy to spare for the noble sport of streaking, spurring the stu- dents to “Free the Streaker”. “On the Threshold of a Dream” was our Ju- nior Prom theme, and Leslie Sataline, Karen Ward and Jan Petrossi reigned over the evening. The school rocked and rolled in Fifties ' Day, and heard some fine music at the One Night Stand in the Senior Court. Superintend- ent of Schools Edward Rogean retired from office. We shared our knowledge of Kung-Fu, belly dancing and backpacking during Mini-Course Week — an exciting and interesting way to end the year. Senior Year “I don’t believe it! I ' ve actually survived long enough to be a Senior!” But little did we know about the SATs, Achievements and Applica- tions, Applications, Applications! 8 ?!! During Spirit Week we took a giant step backwards in time with and after four years we finally won the trophy. This year it was our turn to do the initiating — rather, the orientating. The Freshmen dressed up as Hillbillies, and contary to some skeptical predictions, the week was a real success. Mike, Bill, Tom, Cathy and Darlene were our class officers. The Senior concession stand made loads of money during football season. The discriminating Senior ate breakfast at the Lincoln Diner. Whatever happened to Senior Study? For that matter, whatever happened to the Little Cafe? We learned to live with jackhammers, saws and rowdy construction workers. Mr. Dorsett decided that he was happier as a math teacher and left in January. Karen reigned as our Homecoming Queen, while Chris was our Senior Attendant. A MEMORIAL FOR MELINDA STANTON There is a right time for everything: A time to be born; a time to die; A time to plant; a time to harvest; A time to kill; a time to heal; A time to destroy; a time to rebuild; A time to cry; a time to laugh; A time to grieve; a time to dance; A time for scattering stones; A time for gathering stones; A time to hug; a time not to hug; A time to Jind; a time to lose; A time for keeping; a time for throwing away; A time to tear; a time to repair; A time to be quiet; a time to speak up; A time for loving; a time for hating; A time for war; a time for peace. Ecclesiastes — THEN — At first look, it’s tempting — On second thought, it’s long — In the last dream, it’s too long gone. Now, we have chances — Soon, we’re half done — Lastly our memories bring sun. Take all your desires Return all the fun And always look for the sun.
