Variety Show The nineteen-seventh-three variety show took a nostalgic look at the past from Elvis Presley and The Mamas and The Papas to saddle shoes and bobby-socks In Memoriam And on that cheek and o’er that brow So soft, so calm, yet eloquent, The smiles that win, the tints that glow But tell of days in goodness spent, A mind at peace with all below, A heart whose love is innocent. — Lord Byron Peggy Newbury The noontide is upon us and our half waking has turned to fuller day, and we must part. If in the twilight of memory we should meet once more, we shall speak again together and you shall sing to me a j I deeper song. RUTH NEWQUIST Yearbook Avyimr 4 “I remember walking in the plush emerald hills and coming upon a brilliant sunset. I do not know why it struck me as being so different, yet it did. The sky, steaked in shades of scarlet and azure, mellowed to soft, warm, lavender hues. In the moments of change, there remained a splash of amber sun, silent and wise. I have gazed at the sunset many times since then. I have learned that I am not so different from men of ages past, for men have always turned for answers in the skies and oceans and sunsets as I do. Through humility, I have learned the true wealth of myself as a person. I have learned from that wise sunset who has seen the day. But dusk has softly swept its indigo curtain about the sky, the perfect silence of night sighs its farewell. Gentle stars dot the sphere, they nod and know the wisdom of that sunset will always linger in my memory. For sunsets never know a goodbye. — D. Stachelek When students are fortunate enough to have a teacher whose first love is teaching, challenge and exchange in the classroom is possible. Mrs. Phyllis Deming is such a teacher; she has offered her students the opportunity for an enriching educational experience. She has created an atmosphere most conducive to learning by inspiring her students to think and to express themselves. As an expression of appreciation to a fine teacher, we, the class of nineteen hundred and seventy three, gratefully dedicate our yearbook to Mrs. Phyllis Deming. — L. Pen tore Class History Our freshman year marked the beginning of our high school years. Initiation Day found us dressed as farmers and farmers’ wives .. some of us got our first taste of horseradish and shaving cream. Sue, Laura, Craig, and Dan guided us through our first year. Spirit Week infected us — our enthusiasm payed off when we shared first place in the Spirit Contest with the junior class. There were countless cases of writer’s cramp as we participated in the petition contest. Linda reigned as our freshman attendant. Our restricted dress code was finally lifted. Our freshman year came to a close with “Gone With the Wind” as our tribute to the departing senior class. Our sophomore year was one of changes. The Student Council arranged for smoking priviledges in the school. Dan, Geoff, Diane, and Sue led the class in our activities. Once again we pulled together as a class when Spirit Week came around. Barbara was selected to represent our class in Regina’s court. The sophomore dance was held in the gym, and many of us contributed our efforts toward making it a success. It was a good year that prepared us for the days to follow. As juniors we found ourselves without Mrs. D’Angona, but we adopted Mr. Miller as our class advisor. Geoff, Mike, Sue, and Diane were our class officers. Hillbillies invaded the lobby when we turned our attention toward Spirit Week. Peggy became our Homecoming attendant. “Colour My World” set the mood for our Junior Prom. Diane reigned over the prom along with Peggy and Karen. Donkey Ball was a feature attraction. Mini Courses served as an educational diversion from our daily routine. “Sargeant Pepper” was a success. With the arrival of June, we turned our attention to our senior year, and then to the days that lie beyond. Once again the corridors are filled with sighs and laughter and the sounds of individuals. But we, with so many days quickly becoming memories, turn our attention toward the future. We understand that we must adjust our ideals to the values of the changing world which we are to inherit. It will be ours to love and shape, ours to preserve for generations to come. TODAY take the time to remember good fun, small talk, the warmth of a smile lessons of life that connot be found bound in volumes, take the time to remember what you’ve learned take the time to learn what you remember. Where Are You Going? where are you going you’re completely unknowing of what you’ll be or what you’ll see but you’re going anyway. — J. Pac I often wonder where I’ll end up but still I know that in the end I will be me I will find my own direction and reach the end where satisfaction is the desired result. The school year began with a wide range of activities, the first of which was Spirit Week competition between classes demanded time and effort the Senior Class took the trophy for most school spirit. Initiation became the topic for discussion freshmen dressed as Gladys and Tyrone were left to the mercy of the Senior Class. FOOTBALL SEASON ... is a time when students and townspeople gather and share enthusiasm. The sights and sounds of a game include those of the crowd, the band and drill team, the cheerleaders, the concession stand, and most important, the team. Football season can be, for the team, a time to fight discouragement and exhaustion. But for both the spectator and the person who actively participates, it is a time of excitement. 15 t Cross Country Season 19 Homecoming, A Tradition an exciting day for the queen and her court ... that night a dance was held in the gym in honor of the football team the experience brought many happy moments for all who had taken part The athlete possesses a true love of the sport. It is he who fights physical and mental exhaustion for the privilege of participation. He has shared the ecstasy of an exhilirating win; he has stood alone on the threshold of a humiliating loss. Though he finds himself often without deserved recognition, he continues to strive for perfection as an athlete. Student Council . . . in those sessions there arose a desire to make something of the council, of the school, of the community ... perhaps future establishments of student government will carry our aspirations one step further by expanding them and combining them with aspirations of their own and then apply them with sincere and concentrated effort... Yearbook . . . it was not just an interjection of one’s own ideas, but rather an exchange of self .. it was a combined effort in which each contributed to the whole .. at times it seemed like an endless task as we struggled to meet deadlines ... but in the end the result proved worthy of all we had given ... Fall Sports Banquet National Honor Society Reason and learning are like body and soul. Without the body, the soul is nothing but empty wind. Without the soul the body is but a senseless frame. — K. Gibran Junior Prom The class of ’74 chose “Knights in White Satin” as their theme as queen, Sandy presided over the dance along with her attendants, Gale and Debbie for all who attended, the Junior Prom was a night to be remembered for a long time through music we learn to see with our ears and hear with our hearts . the sky grew heavy mottled with tones of cameo and gray and spoke to the earth with the eloquence of winter. — L. But for the first time in their high school careers, the ’72-’73 Varsity team secured a place in the tournament playoffs ... a renewed spirit arose from the capacity crowds. The Key Club, Pep Band, and Cheerleaders lent their active support throughout the season. Although the Redcoats did not succeed in their tournament game, they still hold the title of Northwest Conference Champions. Pancake Breakfast On the morning of the first basketball game of the season, the cheerleaders sponsored a beforeschool social in the cafeteria. The Varsity cheerleaders prepared a pancake breakfast for the basketball teams. The social and the breakfast were the cheerleader’s way of wishing the boys luck. 37 Girls’ Basketball The Lady Redcoats opened their season with an exciting win, and continued in the same successful fashion, recording a dozen victories and only one defeat. New friendships were formed and old ones renewed. For all those who participated, this was a season never to be forgotten. Gibran : U2 ... 44 The Berlin Redcoats were slight favorites to win the Northwest Conference crown in 1972. Unfortunately, many ball-players were affected by early season injuries. Because of this, the Redcoats finished below expectations with a record of 7-8. Some of the light spots of the season were A1 Landa’s long ball hitting, Jim Pac’s baserunning, and Rich McKeon’s plays in center field.
