Second row; Beverly Griffith, Louise Blaise, Ted Robie, Dorothy Di-Mugno. 31 History As the grains of sand clustered together to pass through the opening in the hourglass, we gathered together at Worthington School to begin our preparations to face the world. The almost two-century-old building which housed our yearning for knowledge represented many things to different people. Some loved it because of its antique charm and colonial history, and others, because it made them feel a part of our American heritage. Yet, there were those whose reactions to this historical, colonial structure were negative, because of the disadvantages it created. Remember the hour-long lunch pei which we had to walk to the High Schoi the brisk walks to Home Economics and Industrial Arts classes where it took some of us three weeks to make palatable cookies and two months to make toothpick holders? Do you recall the tremendous tea-dances in the High School cafeteria held to raise funds for the Eighth grade’s annual New York trip? But one fact about this grand old school will remain as true as it was when we were there in seventh and eighth grade. The teeming spirit of George Washington will forever be present at the school site. Even though imaginary, he, in his empty seat, was our classroom mascot, and his courage and determination was instilled in those students who will carry on the fine tradition he started, Love of God, Love of Country, and Love of Freedom. As the sand progressed through the neck of the hourglass and downward into the lower blub, we entered our first year as high school students. Initiation ushered us in with a theme of Lover Boy, Lover Girl.” Oh, those atrocious costumes!! Stocking hats, frilly blouses, and earrings were a must for the well-dressed Freshman boy. The girls looked just as silly in suspenders, ties, men’s shirts (tied backward) and their hair gathered in two ponytails on top of their heads. On the last day of our initiation, we met Curly,” the friendly, jocular man from the Curtis Publishing Company. He told us he didn’t really want us to win that year, so we came in second. After all, the seniors had to graduate in style. e theme that year was whirl yourself to a curvacious figure.” Naturally, we did it the easy way. How? With the hula hoop, of course! Like the song said, everybody was doing it from three to a hundred and three.” Judy Olson brought the class added glory by being the first freshman girl to ever be a Homecoming Queen’s attendant. To top off our Freshman year, we presented Vaya Condios.” We bid farewell to the Seniors in a Spanish setting. The center decoration took a conical shape for the first time. Our class adviser was Miss Galliette. We lost her but gained Mrs. Mackay, who helped us tremendously with our sophomore dance, Rock and Remember.” She and Mr. Mirizzi were our disc jockeys. Alix Boone represented our Sophomore class in the Homecoming Day ceremonies. 33 Curly” gave us the third prize for our treasury in our Junior year, and Sue Hannon was Homecoming Queen’s attendant. Originality is our class’s middle name. Our dance posters were outstanding not only in color and artistic design but also in ingenuity. We received our class rings in a South Sea setting at the Junior Prom, Bali Hai.” The announcement of blue and green as color choices, brought quizzical looks, but as it turned out, the combination created an extremely exotic atmosphere. The thatched hut, palm trees, flowers and feathered birds also added a touch of realism to this South Sea paradise. Christmas In May” was a big success, and the dance committee felt it was worth all the time and effort that went into the giant snowman. The huge, pink and white snowman was so beautiful, that those who helped create him, guarded him from those monstrous souvenir-hunters. We grew so fond of this four-thousand, tissue-paper-carnation creation” that we stored him in the dance chairman’s garage. There is little doubt that he does still exist to this very day. Now that the sand has finished drifting in the hourglass, we are in our Senior year. During Initiation Week” (long since passed), we initiated Little Braves” and Little Squaws” into the tribe here at Berlin High. Some Little Indians” proposed to each other or to the Big Chiefs,” the Seniors. Some pushed pennies wirh their noses or barked like dogs in the halls. The Indian theme was kept for the Initiation dance Heap Big Beat.” The decorations were again outstanding in originality and beauty. The tepee and canoe surrounded with pumpkins, gourds, squash, and autumn foliage appropriately heralded the fall season. Curly” again wished us good luck in the magazine drive, but we lost to the spirited Freshman class. Susan Hannon reigned on Homecoming Day and at the dance which was held in honor of the football players. Next came the preparations for Senior Showcase, the annual Senior talent show. Hard work and much time yielded acts such as Embalming School,” Berlin girls,” By the Sea,” Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor,” and individual performances by dancers, vocalists, and musicians. The next big affair was our Senior Ball. As usual, the dance committee did a thorough and remarkable job. Finally Graduation Day arrived. Our high school studies, sports and fun were brought to a close. This was the great moment of our lives, for we were going out into the world to work or to further our education. Here the history of the class of 1962 ends but only temporarily, for some of its members will distinguish themselves in other fields. No matter which walk of life each one of us may choose let us all remember that, He, who humbles himself, shall be exalted and he, who exalts himself shall be humbled.” Best of luck for the future! 34 Cla33 %Vill We, the Class of 1962, being of sound mind and body do hereby bequeath the following: James Albert leaves his position on the football team to Phil Sengle. The class of 62” has finally started to settle down and has managed to scatter itself among the different planets. Due to uncontrollable circumstances, Mary Ann Faulkner, our original pilot, has been sent into orbit, and Snyder’s Safe Space Service has agreed to take us on our interplanetary excursion. The crew consists of Motor-Minded Moguliski, Tailwind Tierney, and the famed team of Sharon Johnson and Sandy Johanns. Gumming up the works in the engine room are Bubble-Gum Bonola, Driveshaft Gronkowski, Repairman Garbiel, and Shipwreck Shine. (We have so much confidence in our crew that we have taken out $250,000 insurance from Audette’s Agency). All in readiness we hear the countdown given by Gino Annunziata, and then we blast off. Speeding along we hear a siren and catch a glimpse of Officers Jean Grazious and Jim DeChesser giving chase to Dennis Berti and Larry Coggins, who have been dragging down the Milky Way. Meanwhile, Dave Wells, our pilot, narrowly misses Annette Scalora and Phyllis Pulcini who have just dropped off John Michalski and Don Noury at the Naval Space Reserve Center. Calmly proceeding, we find that Dave Motyka and Larry Malone, stowaways, have accidently damaged the engine. Seeing Farone’s Fuel Station and Hall’s Hideaway, we decide to stop for repairs and refreshments. After leaving the space ship in the capable hands of Bill DeBlasio, George Hemphill, and Clyde Andros, we enter into the restaurant. Soft lights, courtesy of Barry Ward and Ray Czech; good food, courtesy of George Melegonis, Diane Kinch, and Doris Goyette; and good music, furnished by Charlie Cornish, Rich Erling, Rick Crolius, Bob DeMarco, and Tom Tondo make the stop enjoyable. Added to these attractions are the featured entertainers; torchsingers Carol Emerson and Louise Blais, and dancers Alan Zipadelli, Carol Gates, and Chris Ropiak. Several waitresses, Carol Petrossi, Dee Buch, Rose Zottola, Cheryl Centurelli, and Carol Sobchuck, are having difficulty with some irate customers, Rick Wezowicz, Bob Stowell, Ted Robie, and the Misses Bighinatti and Fritzson. Manager Rus Case comes over to settle the dispute with the aid of hostess Sue Hannon. At the conclusion of our meal, we pay our bill to the cashier, Mayo Snowden. The doormen, Raoul Lewicki and Jerry Martinchek give a friendly smile as we leave. After finding our space ship in good order, we resume our trip and decide to head for Pluto. Before long we find that we are lost and have to ask directions from the Space Rangers, Tom Kozuch, Bill Kasiski, and Neil Batagowski. They direct us to the Milky Way, and off we go. Just before landing on Pluto, we arrive at a toll station where Scrooge Ohlson is presiding, assisted by Diane Cienwicz and Sharon Tibbals. Unfortunately we’re short of funds so Beth Lavender and Lenny Mierzejewski hurriedly print some greenbacks. We finally reach Pluto! At the Tourist Information Center, Joan Sake and Dick Yale thoroughly confuse us, so we’re on our own again. First things first, so the girls head for Madame Sisti’s Salon to have their hair styled by Jackie Bartose and Jan Romanowski. They spot John Roncaiol having his hair touched up while JoAnne Lord gives him a manicure. Looking beautiful, the girls stroll on to Fletcher’s Fashion Shop, where they purchase originals 42 designed by Adele. Models, Ruth Almquist and Beth Peterson, further tempt the girls to buy new space suits made by Sandquist. Running up more bills are Liz Slepski and Leslie Wishart. Later the crew meets at Stack’s Stadium to see a tiddlywink match between the 4 Tiddlers and the 4 Winklers. On the Tiddler's side are Groggy Glover, Crazy-Legs Walters, Smiling Simeone, and Carousing Cassidy. On the opposing side are Spasmodic Solek, Charleyhorse Cheatham, Agile Albert, and Kracked Kevorkian. Leading the cheers are Huff Kramer and Boo-Boo Deuson, ably assisted by Bev Griffith and Joyce Daigle, whose uniforms are supplied by Rod Hedfield and Sandy Perzanowski. After a long tough fight, the match ends in a tie, and we decide to leave for Neptune. We head for the space ship and blast off just in time to miss the 5:00 P.M. rush. We no sooner start, than we nearly get hit by Eddie Pulcini, who is driving on the wrong side of the Milky Way. Carol Jablonski and Kristin Straub become very upset, so Brad Antanaitas and Nick Bountress help them to recover from their fright. Linda Mattson and Sharon Ward are thoroughly amused by the whole affair. We land on Neptune after being guided in by Paul Richards and Rich Michaels. Our main purpose for coming to this planet is to see Pam Hyde and Diane Sinescalco, who are confined in McCormack’s Memorial Hospital with symptoms Dr. Sheer cannot diagnose. Nurses Smilnak and Hinchliffe are conducting tests in the lab where they run into Anne Motyka, who is preparing a strange potion. Just as we levae, we see Alix Boone coming in with a floral arrangement furnished by Panasewich’s Plutonian Gardens. We have plenty of time, so we decide to go see the Life and Loves of Greg Arute, a new smash hit, written by JoAnne Closson and Alan Parker. Curtain time is delayed because Bob Mulberry” Douglas, the leading actor, and Karen Stange, the leading lady, get tangled in the curtains. Stage manager, Joyce Aldrich, comes over to straighten things out, but she also gets tangled, and Producer Byrne rushes to relive the situation. The play begins with Love 1, Judy Olson, fighting with Love 2, Priscilla Hamlin, as Love 3, Dorothy DiMungo joins to make it a gruesome threesome. Joe Kozalka who is attracted to Love 2, tries to help the girls calm down, but Jim Burt enters to confuse the situation even more. Thank goodness there is an intermission now, and as the lights go up, we spot President Carl Johnson sitting in the executive box surrounded by F.B.I. agents, Joe Klewicki, Bill Wright, and Pat Doran. We scurry out to the lobby to get some refreshments from the counter girls, Kathy Cannon, Liz Worchal, and Liz Carlson. As we return to our seats, we see celebrities, Pam Leone, Linda Wilcox, and Sharon Zup, being escorted to their seats by ushers, John Chotkowski, Alan Berkley, and Rick LaFlamme. Chain store owner Charlie Fournier, is escorted by usherette, Kathy Vilchinskas. The play ends on a happy note with Love 4, Carolyn Veneziano, capturing the affections of Mulberry.” Just before we leave for home, we stop at Agan’s Antique Shop where sales girls, Marge Albert and Jean Bolles, sell us some lovely souvenirs for our friends on Earth. Herb Bowen rushes in with a space-o-gram for Sandy Smart, who learns that she has to leave for Maine. Chris Slepski and Sandy Stawski also leave to help her pack her things. We immediately depart for Earth, and on the way back. Bob Oleask tries to give Don Valeggia a hot foot but only succeeds in setting the space ship on fire. Ken Johnson and Jack Romegialli hurriedly put it out, and Janet Scarola and Dave Simcik give a loud cheer as we land safely back home. 43 UNDERCLASSMEN JUNIORS JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Paul Gacek, Richard Pavlech, Tim Hall, Dean Hubert 44 SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS Karen Anderson, Kenneth Sherrick Jeff Herre, Thomas Griffith SOPHOMORES 45 FRESHMEN FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS Betsy Hungerford, Alan Dodson, Carol Johnson, Victor Forest 46 ' - _ : : “ FOOTBALL TEAM First row, left to right; Mr. Nuccio, Coach; D.
