SANDERS We, the Echo Staff of 1959, along with the faculty and student body, proudly dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Carroll B. Sanders, head coach of football, basketball, and track, and also teacher of junior high, biology, and driver training. Mr. Sanders has been on the faculty eight years and has brought much recognition to Berlin Heights. This year with his help we have had an undefeated football team which won the league title and trophy. In basketball, we had an outstanding record and won the first Huron - Erie League title in Berlin Heights history. 2 Mr. Sanders graduated from Ashland College. Late last summer, on August 16, the Erie County Band played at the Sandusky Air Progress Show in Sandusky. Through September, the band played at several football games, both at home and away. On October 6, they went on a field trip to Columbus to see the football game at Ohio State University. They also built the first prize-winning float at the Homecoming Day ceremonies. The Erie County Band played at several basketball games. In May the Erie County Band played in a concert at the Milan Aud - itorium. The High School choir sang at the P. T. A. meeting on October 14, at which members of Congress were present, David Baumhart being the prin- ciple speaker. During the Christmas season the choir sang as a combined unit with the Junior - High choir. The choir sang at the World Day of Prayer at the local Congrega- tion Church. The Latin Club and some of the Spanish students went to Cleveland to visit the Cleveland Art Museum in November. The members attended the J. C. L. convention April 10 at Ohio State in Columbus. The members of the team were Tom Ward, Tim Gammie, and Clark Hahn. By winning the district, it gave them the right to attend the state contest in which they placed very high. They are the new Executive type done on an IBM electric typewriter, and the Sponsor page for the names of the parents and local merchants. East fall the yearbook staff attended a yearbook workshop sponsored by the Inter-Collegiate Press Association at Blufton, Ohio. The Highlites put out six issues this year. The paper has received many excelled and superior ratings in the past years. The 1958 - 1959 Student Council of Berlin Local School has been very active. It sponsored the annual Homecoming dance, which is held after the Homecoming Game. This year the Student Council did something different. After the game it invited the alumni in for refreshments in the new music room. It also had another new project, a coat check at every home game (basketball). The Student Council also sponsored a free dance on February 27. Neal Leimbach receiving Holiday Tournament Trophy from Boyd Smith, principal of Bloomville High School. BASKETBALL STATISTICS Burnham was high in rebounds with 139 offensive and 187 defensive. The team had a total of 308 offensive and 501 defensive rebounds. Leimbach scored 95 field goals for 43% while Linden had 27 for a 51%. Burnham was also high in free throws with 68 for 100 for a 68%. Burnham made the most points total with 258 while Sattig followed close behind with 244 points. The team's total score was 1108 points to the opponents 1094. 26 MVP Coach Sanders presenting M. V. Bruce was forward; he also received the award for the best foul shooting. 27 BASEBALL The Berlin Tigers started off the 1958 baseball season by beating Milan 4-1, copping the Erie County championship. In district play at Clyde they were downed by Greenwich 9-5. Local hurlers posted wins over Milan, St. Paul, and North Fair- field. The only losses were to Wakeman and Greenwich (district). Rich Kelble and Bill Werner each hit one homer. Rich and Cise Hoffman also led in batting average with 270. In the first meet of the season Berlin placed second to Firelands and beat South Amherst. They beat Margaretta and South Smherst in the next meet to place second to Vermilion. The most exciting of the six meets was the Huron Erie League which Berlin won by a 1 2 point. Wakeman was second with an 5 8 and Milan third with 35 1 2.
