The Student Council had charge of the Homecoming program and dance held on October 26. Two projects under discussion this year were the purchasing of a water cooler for the gym and the In- stallation of a water outlet on Memorial Field. Barbara Fox won the local cherry pie contest and went on to win the county and regional contests. Barbara and Mrs. Fowler motored to Canton for the state contest on February 1, 1958. The members and several of their mothers attended the annual Flower Show in Cleveland on March 5. Parliamentary Procedure won the annual county contest by defeating Margaretta and Milan at Margaretta on November 20. Margaretta came In second with Milan as third. TRACK Berlin Heights wrapped up their fourth consecutive Huron-Erle League track title In 1957 with a sixty-three and a half to thirty-six and three quarters decision over Greenwich, the Tigers' closest competitor. Berlin was competing with Greenwich, Townsend-Wakeman, Monroeville, Milan, North Fairfield, and New Haven In the meet at Milan, May 10, 1957. Berlin boasted five first places and four second places. Jerry Howells, a senior, paced by taking first place prizes In the 220 yard dash, high Jump, and broad Jump. The other two first place prizes were taken by Lyn urant, a Junior, in the 880 yard run. and Joe Burnham, Bruce Burnham, Jerry Sprankel, and Jerry Howells by winning the 880 yard relay. Others who placed In the Huron-Erle League were Joe Burnham, second In the 100 yard dash; Robin Coolldge, second In the mile run; Bill Werner, fourth with the shot rut; John Weaver and Bay Otto, third and fourth respectively In the quarter mile; Bob Sprankel, third In the 880 yard run; Bruce Burnham, third In the 220 yard dash; Jerry Sprankel, fourth In the pole vault; Dewey Acor second on the high Jump; Bill Kolar, fourth In the discus throwing;and Jerry Sprankel, second In the broad Jump. The Tigers placed first In a triangular meet with Willard and Milan. Ber- lin collected slxty-one and a half points to Willard's forty-nine and a half and Milan's nine points. Berlin also placed first In a quadrangular meet at Fire- lands. The scores were Berlin Heights, seventy-nine; Columbia, sixty-five and one third; Flrelands, forty-five and five sixths; and Rldgevllle. thirty-one and five sixths. Jerry Howells and Bruce Burnham paced the squad with fifteen and one fourth points and ten and one fourth points respectively. BASEBALL Splitting their season record, the Tigers finished with two wins and two defeats. The first contest was called in the second inning because of rain. Milan edged by with a one point margin to down Coach Garland's nine 2-1. Berlin grabbed their two victories by walking over Monroeville 8-2 and later by a narrower margin, 2- 1. In the final contest, Townsend-Wakeman powered their way to a ?-l final score. Dewey Acord led the hurlers with a two win, one lose record. In these three games he struck out a total of 39 men. Dave Sattlg pitched the other game giving himself a 0-1 record and struck out 9 opponents. Eugene Kilbride took top honors as the '57 batting champ holding a .1+00 average in four games. With eight lettermen returning for the '58 season the Tlger6 hold high hopes for a more successful year. This year for the first time Berlin Heights High had an intra- mural basketball tournament. The coaches picked six varsity basket- ball players as captains of the teams. They were Lyn Grant, Bill Werner, Cise Hoffman, John Johnson, Neal Lelmbach, and Bruce Burnham. A process of a double elimination was used to decide the champions. Bill Werner's Middles ended up with the championship, with a record of J wins, no defeats. HOMECOMING Paula Shamhart, a member of the senior of the senior class, reigned as the Homecoming Queen when the Berlin Heights Tigers defeated the South Amherst Cavaliers by the soord or 16 to 7, at the fourth annual Homecoming game, played on Memorial Field, October 26. The three attendents were Sharon Coughlin, Junior attendent; Barbara Ward, sophomore attendant; and Kay Ward, freshman attend- ant. The Erie County Band performed during the halftime. COMMENCEMENT 1957 The highlight of the 1957 commencement was the presence of Governor C. William O'Neill who gave the class address John Carson was the valedictorian, and Myrna Baker was the sal- utatorlan. Josepn Burnham received the Call Award. President of the board, David Smith, presented the diplomas to the 33 seniors '
