7he T ICountaineer Uhe ( ' ass of 1968 9t ore wo i vf AT GRADUATING TIME The graduates are going forth- God bless them every one! - To run this hara and stubborn world Just as it should be run; But much I fear they’ll find that facts Don't always track with dreams; And running this old world is not As easy as it seems. The graduate is prone to think His wisdom is complete. He's but to ask - the world will lay Its trophies at his feet. But schooldays done and work begun, He learns to his regret The college of experience He has not mastered yet. The world has garlands and applause At graduating time; But may forget him the next day, When he attempts to climb. Life is a battle where each one Must seek and hold his own. He who would rise above the clouds Must scale the heights alone. This is the rule of life to-day. As it has ever been; The world bestows its smiles on those Who have the strength to win. Beneath all outward semblances It looks for merit true. It little cares how much you know, But asks, what can you do? Unknown MR. EARLE HEWITT MRS. JEANETTE MILLER MR. DAVID WANDER For the past four years of high school these three people have helped us by advising us, helping us with various activities, and guiding us to a meaningful future. The class of 1968 would like to extend its sincere appreciation to them. 7 Tessacye io (Jracfuaies The class of 1968 has achieved a major goal in the academic world by successfully completing the requirements for graduation. This completed goal tells the world that you have the very great personal attribute of completing a job once commenced. Armed with this asset, you are now ready to face the world beyond the years of Berlin with a degree of assurance of success. Congratulations from the entire staff of the Berlin Central School District. JOHN H. CORNWALL Supervising Principal The Class of ’68 wishes to express its best wishes to Wesley Adams for a rapid recovery. Although he will not graduate with us. we will always consider him a member of our class. Left to right, ROW 1: Art Editor: R. Bentley Associate Editor; N. Horton Editor-in-Chief: M. J A Tjou At first the Sycamores seem mad, but it is not long before we realized that if they are mad, the rest of the world is madder. In contrast to these delight - jul people are the unhappy Kirbys. The plot shows how Tony, attractive young son of the Kirbys, falls in love with Alice Sycamore and brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore home on the wrong evening. The shock sustained by the Kirbys, who are invited to eat cheap food, shows Alice that marriage with Tony is out of the question. The Sycamores, however, though sympathetic to Alice, find it hard to realize her point of view. Meantime Tony, who knows the Sycamores are right and his own people wrong, will not give her up, and in the end Mr. Kirby is converted by the happy madness of the Sycamores, partic- ularly since he happens in during a visit by an ex-Grand Duchess earning her living as a waitress. No mention has as yet been made of the strange activities of certain members of the household engaged in the manufacture of fireworks; nor of the printing press set up in the parlor; nor of Rheba the maid and her friend Donald; nor of Grandpa's interview with the tax collector when he tells him he doesn't believe in the income tax. Although they didn't have a winning record, they did have good spirit and showed it in all their games. The starting team for the varsity squad included four seniors: Roy Stowell, Loyal Maxon, Steve Demick, and David DeFelice. Coach Muller looks ahead to a gpod season next year with a nucleus of returning juniors including Larry Mason, Ken Gardner, Doug Mockler, Bob Strasswimmer, and Dick Vincent. In League play we ended up in third place. Starting off rather well in the league we had high hopes, but as the year progressed and our competition became rougher, Berlin ended up tied for third place. Battling for third place against New Lebanon. Berlin won its last game of the year, making the season not a complete loss. JUNIOR VARSITY Berlin's junior varsity ended the year with a 7 and 11 season. The boys fought hard and were determined to win, but were overwhelmed by some of their opponents. One outstanding player on the J. V. team was Randy Maxon. Randy was the leading scorer with 317 points for the season: Other vital members of the team were Gary Maxon, Bill Phillips, Ron Walsh, and Bob Griswold. The J. V.'s were coached by Mr. Purdy, a new teacher at the school, who put a lot of effort into building a J. V. team. We hope that Mr. Purdy will be back next year, and we look forward to a better season.
