Merrills Mr. David Wander Contents Message On behalf of the Berlin Central School Staff, I extend congratulations to the graduates of the Class of 1965 for accomplishing the goal of gradua- tion. It is gratifying to note that you, as students, are acutely aware of the necessity of an education and the answer it will provide for your future. It is hoped that you will continue in this vein and provide in the future better educational opportunities for others than exist at present. From my personal knowledge of you, 1 know that you will face your responsibilities with a mature outlook and in the best interests of humanity. Best wishes to you in the future. — John H. Cornwall We, the Class of 1965, take pleasure in dedicating our yearbook, The Moun- taineer, to our devoted and deserving English teacher, Mrs. Margaret Fogg. As fac- ulty advisor for the Senior play and the Taconican, she has given both her time and effort to guide us as a teacher and a friend. We extend our sincere appreciation for everything she has done. Special Recognition The Class of 1965 would like to extend special recognition to the following three men. Their contributions to the school over the past year are gratefully appreciated. The 1965 Mountaineer has taken on a new image, the soccer team has had one of its best seasons in Berlin history, and the music department has successfully hosted the Rensselaer County Music Festival. Kaufman This comedy chronicles the tribulations of a family man who craves - and gets - a little place in the country to call his own. Everybody knows Newton Fuller, the sentimental little American who wants just a piece of land. Newton and his wife, Annabelle, and their daughter, Madge, are hypnotized into taking over one of those windowless, waterless, almost roofless houses that dot the countryside. The ensuing troubles may be summed up as a search for water, a quarrel with a neighbor who owns not only the brook but the very road that leads from the highway to the house, the attempted elopement of the daughter with a summer-theater actor, and the usual in- vasion of the week-end guests, including a prodigal uncle who is assumed to be rich but who turns out to be just another bankrupt. It is discovered that the neighbor really doesn't own Newton's roadway, and that Annabelle, who began by showing dis- gust over her husband's idiocy in wanting to live in the country, decides that he was right all along. The team missed the sectionals in the final game of the year as they were defeated 2-1 by Ichabod. The team was especially helped by French transfer stu- dent, Philippe Thibault. Berlin can be proud of one of the best soccer seasons in its history. Records Keveny 2-1 Hoosac 4-2 Mt. Greylock 4-2 New Lebanon 3-1 Germantown 2-1 Ichabod Crane 1-2 New Lebanon 1-2 Mt. The team also picked up exciting victories over Ockawamick (46-44) and Germantown (34-30). Regular players were Alan Weaver, Peter Beaudry, Harland Thompson, Guy Manchester, Edward Slat- tery and Robert Jansen. Varsity basketball Left to right, ROW 1: C. Gutermuth; W. Maxon; W. The Mountaineers started the season with decisive victories over North Bennington, Roeliff Jansen and Tamarac. Then the team went into a midyear slump during which they lost six straight before win- ning three out of the last four to finish the season with a 7-9 record. The most thrilling game of the year was the final one of the season against New Lebanon. Leading scorers for the year, William Andrukiewicz and Donald Beers, hit 12 for 13 and 11 for 15 respectively from the foul line to help Berlin to a 65-61 victory. Under the supervision of Mr. James Slattery, the small Berlin track team had another good season in 1964. Philippe Thi- bault set school records in the mile and two mile and Chris Stephens tied the school record in the hundred yard dash. The sea- son was climaxed with the Columbia Coun- ty Track Meet. Berlin was represented in the: shotput (Brown), 440 (Gifford), broad- jump and mile (Thibault), and 100 and 220 (Stephens). Thibault and Stephens came through with silver medals in the mile, 100 and 220. The 1964 baseball season was not very fruitful (3-12) but many lettermen will be returning and the team is hoping for a better season this year. The team will be missing two fine players in Don Demick and Dennis Garvin. Demick as first string catcher did very well as a receiver and also hit at a . 289 clip and Garvin as shortstop hit for a . 343 average. The outstanding returning letterman is Bill Andrukiewicz, pitcher and leading batter, who we hope will get better backing this year. Custodians Left to right: F. Smith; J. O'Dell; T. Gooder- mote.
