The SCROLL I960 Published by the Senior Class Berlin Central School Berlin, New York Foreword As our high school years draw to a close, we look back upon these wonderful years as students of Berlin Central School with fond regret. We hope we have included memories for each and everyone of you, and that you en- joy reading this annual as much as we have enjoyed compiling it. Graduation Long silent rows advance in solemn stillness, With humble hearts toward the threshold. Sadly and yet not so sad, grateful, tired parents. Just begun but ending when their eyes can see no more. Each one advances and receives a key, A fateful key for with it they must unlock life's door. Mid applause and heart felt laughter, Students leave forever silent books. And emerge beyond the threshold, men and women. By Francis Rooney Senior High English Teacher 1957 District Superintendent MRS. CRAIB Board of Education Left to right: George Golowaty, Gordon Clark. Stanley Bunce, Caleb Hyatt. Jr.. E. Carter Griswold. Donald Stephens and Russell Miller. Message to the Graduates This year will mark a major step forward for the members of the grad- uating class of 1960. It has been my good fortune to have taught many of you in mathematics. From this close association with you I have ob- served your keen interest and outlook toward others. There can be no greater reward than to take the tools of education which you have gained during your stay at Berlin and apply them as a useful servant of humanity. Your visions of the future probably force your eyes to focus on the clouds, but I have every confidence that you will watch the direction in which your feet move. And so I say to each and every one of you - success and good fortune. John H. Good Citizenship Award. The senior selected by the faculty this year was Sharon Burdick. She has submitted an essay to the D.A.R. State Chairman. This essay will be entered in state competition. A scholarship awards the author of the best essay. Congratulations and good luck, Sharon! Last December six senior girls competed for the Betty Crocker Award in a nation- wide test. By attaining the highest score at B.C.S., Diane Healey earned the title of Berlin's Homemaker of Tomorrow. She re- ceived a pin in recognition of her achieve- ment, and she is also eligible for a scholar- ship. CLASS MOTTO Struggle Builds Character CLASS OFFICERS President Secretary WAYNE CRANDALL JOYCE-ANN LOKER Vice President------WALT GOLOWATY Treasurer..................JANET DEYOE Class History The long awaited September of 1956 arrived and we finally embarked upon our four high school years that were to go by all too quickly. In our Freshman year we elected Jeffery Roberts as President, Lynn Gutermuth, Vice President, Sharon Burdick, Secretary and Betsy Boehme, Treasurer. We did not accomplish much as Freshmen. In 1957 we took on the title of Sophomores. We really felt as though we were getting up in the world! That year we elected Bud Beck as President, Bob Reynolds, Vice President, Janet Deyoe, Treasurer, and Sharon Burdick, Secretary. During the year we sponsored a food sale and a dance to boost our funds. When 1958 rolled around we became Juniors and at last we were entitled to our class rings! We ordered them early in the year, but they did not arrive until the end of February. How excited we were! Most of us went around holding our hands up to our faces so everyone would notice them! That year we elected Bud Beck as President, Bob Reynolds, Vice President, Sharon Burdick, Treasurer, and Rita Gundrum, Secretary. Early in the year we undertook a magazine drive which netted quite a sum for our treas- ury. During the course of the year we also sponsored a food sale and sold jackets with the Berlin emblem. When March came we began preparing for the Junior-Senior Prom - the really big event of the entire school year. We chose Sayonara as the theme, and with the untiring efforts of Mr. William Stanziano and class members we put on a very successful prom. Another year ended and we were about to become Seniors. The last rung of the ladder was before us! To begin our Senior year we chose four very capable officers: President, Wayne Crandall, Vice President, Walt Golowaty, Janet Deyoe, Treasurer, and Joyce-Ann Loker, Secretary. As Seniors we were entitled to the soda and candy concession and chose Terry McCart to head the committee. Plans for our trip to Wash- ington soon got under way as did the yearbook. We were beginning to realize that the end of our high school years was near and we began to raise all the money we could for our treasury. Pins were sold which had the gold letters B.C.S. and the year of gradua- tion. Sales for the yearbook ads, booster list, and the books themselves got off to a fast start. Late in January we began thinking of our senior play. After much thought we finally chose The Unguided Miss.” Tryouts were held during English class and the parts were given out. The play was given on the nights of March 24 and 26 and was a howling success. Later in the spring we sponsored spaghetti suppers in the various towns. Then the long planned for and dreamed of trip to Washington arrived. Did we have fun! I'm sure none of us will ever forget it. Upon our return we were glad to say that our treasury held out for the yearbooks which arrived in early June. Graduation is upon us and we cannot help but look back on these four yean with fond regret. Class Will We, the class of 1960, of Berlin Central School, being of sound mind and judgement and recog- nizing the uncertainties of life, do make public and so declare this to be our last will and testament. We hereby bequeath the following: Richard Agan leaves a dollar for gas to Richard Demick and Allan Brown. Bud Beck leaves his Dairy Bar to Coach Muller. Sharon Burdick leaves her teddy bear to Dave Mahoney. Betsy Boehme leaves her worn out oboe reeds to some aspiring young oboeist. Carolyn Crandall leaves a tie clasp to Mr. Fleishman. Wayne Crandall leaves to his brother. Dale, four happy years at B. C. S. Janet Deyoe leaves Molly Mooney her flashlight for next years cellar exploring. Howard Ellis leaves his height to David Coulter. Robert Ellis leaves his good behavior to Hjarl Zwinge. Walt Golowaty leaves his size 32 basketball trunks to Meesh Maxon. Bob Reynolds leaves Mr. Wander a box of old menus for quizzes and a fire drill schedule so quizzes will be uninterrupted. Joyce-Ann Loker leaves her hair to the boys of B. C. S. so they will be able to mess it up. Janice Morin leaves her calorie chart to Connie Smith. Fred Horton leaves Mr. Davis some peace and quiet on the players bus. Sandra Rose leaves her homemaking needle and thread to Joan Fiske. Gordon Russell leaves Mr. Fleishman a piece of gum for English class. Dick Johnson leaves Barb a sign saying Hands off. She's mine. Wilma Thomas leaves a diet pill to Walt Harrington. Terry McCart leaves the Mark of the McCart on every long-haired girl in B. C. S. Robert Smith leaves his place in the lunch line to some patient person. Diane Healey leaves her ability to get along with people to anyone who needs it. Ron Bartus leaves his curly hair to Mr. Cornwall. George Corlew leaves his popularity to Tony Mastropole. Eugene Hangst leaves - gladly! John Schmid leaves Amos Jones his place in the road for his daily cigarette. Mary Stevens leaves her blue eyes to Kathy McCumber. The Seniors leave the Student Council to be run by some other class. To Mr. Urbano a permanent spot in the lunch line - the last place. The Class of 1960 leaves B. C. S. in a reasonable good shape. To Mr. French, a sound-proof room to give his lectures. To Mr. Gosso, a mechanical drawing class who have plates in on time. To Mrs. Maxson, an automatic dictating machine. We leave Mr. Wander to recall the three years of Terror as our homeroom teacher and hope he finds another class as nice as ours. We leave Joanne Strait, Pat Piche, Pat Fitzgerald and Carol Ward a year's supply of late passes. Class Prophecy It is early spring of the year 1970. and all thirty members of the graduating class of 1960 are meeting at the home of Howard Ellis, who has already made his first mil- lion designing interplanetary space rockets. First to arrive is Elizabeth Boehme, better known as Betsy. After graduating from Bryn Mawr, Betsy became head of the language department there. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Agan have now arrived, Mrs. Agan being the former Caro- lyn Crandall. She is now the happy wife and secretary of a successful executive at Al- legany-Ludlum, Richard Agan. Well, here comes Buddy Beck who finally graduated from West Point. After graduating, he married the General's daughter and was promoted Colonel shortly there- after. He is now busily raising an army of his own. Next to arrive are a couple of Hollywood's most controversial residents, the one and only Joyce-Ann Loker and Bob Reynolds. Joyce went to Hollywood soon after grad- uation, but no one seems to know what she has been doing for the last ten years. She's keeping it a secret! To get back to Bob, he is now the owner of Hollywood's largest used car lot. He can boast of having a different car for each night of the week. Bob has managed to remain a bachelor, but he is keeping all those starlets guessing. In comes Wilma Thomas and Sandra Rose. Wilma is now a housewife, although she did have a short career as a model for Seventeen Magazine. Sandy is now an estab- lished pianist who is supporting her husband, a politician. Next to arrive is the former Janice Morin and the former Donna Boomhower, both very successful nurses. Janice is married to a very famous brain surgeon, and Donna is happily married to a professional basketball player. Speaking of basketball, who should arrive but Walt Golowaty, famed athletic director of the University of Kentucky? He has just completed a successful season with the champion Wildcats.” You remember Walt as quite a wild cat himself! Mrs. William Palmer, the former Janet Deyoe, has just arrived. She and Billy are now the proud parents of two sets of curly headed twins, all boys! Here come the three musketeers of our class, Gordy Russell, Dick Johnson, and Eugene Hangst. Gordy became a protege of Mr. Fleishman and became an English teacher after his completion of college. Dick took a cruise to the Caribbean and he liked Cuba so much he decided to overthrow Castro and set himself up as dictator. Sur- prisingly enough, he succeeded with the help of his wife, Barbara, who stayed in Florida to ship him arms and ammunition. Eugene is now the head of a chain of meat stores throughout the country. Here are probably the two quietest members of the class of '60, the former Rose- mary Geerholt and the former Diane Healey. Rosemary married a serviceman who is now a captain, and Diane is happily married to her fiance of 1960. Arriving now is the host's brother, Robert Ellis. After graduating from high school, Bob went to college and studied designing. He is now the head designer of the Chrysler Motor Corporation, and needless to say, he no longer drives his Dodge with farm plates. Next to enter is the former Sharon Burdick. Upon graduating from Syracuse Uni- versity, she eloped with the star quarterback of her Alma Mater and the University is extremely upset since Sharon's husband had another season of football to play before graduating. Arriving now is Fred E. Horton Jr., the famous head of the Crowley Dairy Co. Fred, who started at the bottom, has, in ten short years, worked his way to the top of a multi-million dollar business. Of course, he had help - he inherited the business from his father. As in all groups of people there are those certain few who refuse to conform with the accepted way. This is how it was with George Corlew and Ron Bartus. Soon after leaving B.C.S. they became ex-members of the beat generation, and are now well es- tablished beatniks. Here come two more members of B.C.S.'s best class. Bob Smith and Everett Madden. Bob worked on his father's farm for awhile before becoming a high pressure salesman for Farm-All Tractors. Everett went to an apprentice school after graduation and is now a famous tool maker and inventor. He has invented a machine which watches TV. This gives the people more time to do other things. Next to enter is New York State's most famous auctioneer, Terry McCart. After having served a short time in the army, Terry went in business with his father and be- came what he is today??? Two of the last members of our class to arrive are Mary Stevens and John Schmid. Mary was married shortly after graduation and is the set designer of a local television show. John is now a doctor who has had many famous patients (may their souls rest in peace!). You undoubtedly remember James Maxfield as a member of the class of 1960. Well, this is a sad story Indeed. Jim volunteered to ride in one of Howard's Space Ships and hasn’t been heard of since. Last, but not least, is our former class president, Wayne Crandall. Wayne has become a very successful civil engineer. He has traveled wildly for adventure, but ad- venture wasn’t all he found. He found himself a wife as well. He is now the proud father of two sons and a darling daughter. Now that we're all together again, let's talk over our high school years and catch up on what we have done and what has happened to us during the past ten years. Class of 1960 MOST SINCERE Carolyn and Walt BEST DANCERS Joyce-Ann and Terry Senior On March 25 and 26 the class of 1960 presented The Unguided Miss, a three- act comedy by William Davidson. Clint Bryce, played by Dwight Beck, is a parent whose ideas on raising children date back to the 1800's. He feels today's teenagers are sitting in a golden chair carv- ing their initials on the arm. Sharon Burdick added spice to the play by portraying Susan Bryce, a teenager who at times is fifteen and nineteen and sometimes seventeen. Madge Bryce, played by Donna Boomhower, is Clint’s wife and an excellent mother. Buzzie, Susan's sister, who is about eleven, has adjusted herself to parental stupidity. Janet Deyoe made Buzzie come to life. Robert Smith, who played George Matthews, became an absent-minded teenager trying to build a Jaguar from an old motorcycle. Jim and Betty Warren, played by Terry McCart and Janice Morin, are the Bryces' neighbors who convince the Bryces to board a foreign exchange student. Betsy Boehme, complete with her accent, portrays the character of Lucia Ferrari, the foreign student who comes to live with the Bryces. Howard Ellis plays Carlos Delgado, the handsome young foreign student who lives at the Warrens' and who starts dating Susan. Molly Warren, played by Wilma Thomas, is about Buzzie's age and she and Buzzie managed to keep everyone and everything stirred up. The judge who reprimands Susan for her illegal driving was played by Gordon Russell, and Mrs. Riley, the juvenile probation officer, by Diane Healey. Mr. Paul Fliesman directed our play, while Mr. Joseph Konecny and Miss Ste- phanie Korzeniewska helped us with the design of our set. Wayne Crandall was our stage manager. Looking back upon it now we can truly appreciate what a wonderful and enjoyable experience we had. We'll never forget how nervous we were and yet everything worked out as we had hoped and planned. On Thursday morning, April 14, 1960, nineteen seniors and two chaperons left Berlin Central School by bus for our long awaited and exciting trip to Washington. Tired, half-awake, but high spirited, we arrived in Washington. Because of our long trip, we decided to get as much sleep as we could to prepare for those four exciting days to fol- low. It was a short sleep, however, because Friday morning arrived before we knew it. After a big breakfast we began our tour of the big city. We first saw the Library of Congress, the White House and the Rock Creek Zoo. After a relaxing and most comfortable sleep in the Roosevelt Hotel, we were ready for another exciting day - Saturday After breakfast we went across the Potomac to Arlington where we saw Lee Mansion and Arlington Cemetery. We were also very fortunate to see the changing of the guard at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. After supper we were ready for our moonlight cruise on the Potomac. This was the part of the trip that the boys anxiously waited for! It was a long day because we weren’t back from the cruise until 12:30. Sun- day, April 17, was Easter Sunday and our class attended sunrise services at Arlington Cemetery and the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. In the afternoon we visited Alexandria, Virginia, Mount Vernon, and the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, where everyone got out their wallets for a few samples. However, they didn't pass out any. Every- one really enjoyed themselves Monday night at the Glen Echo Amuse- ment Park. Remember the roller coaster ride? Tuesday we dreaded awaking because we knew it was to be our last day in Washington. Some of us did our last minute shopping while the others took a long farewell look at Washington. After our last quiet lunch in the Capital we boarded the bus for home. Nineteen sleepy seniors and their two equally tired chaperons began the journey home. Our Senior Trip was over but the memories of Washington will stay with us forever. THE GRAND MARCH Junior-Senior Prom Seniors Left to right, ROW 1; C. Crandall, J. Morin. D. Healey, W. Golowaty, W.
