“
Published by the Seniors Foreword We are now approaching the end of our high school careers and the cross roads of our lives. Each of us will take a different path, but we shall always carry with us the memories of our high school years. This book represents a high school dream of the Class of 1957 come true . Each page has its own meaning. How could we forget our class- mates, friends, teachers, Clarence and the many activities and athletics in which most of us participated. In publishing this book we wish to give substance to our memories and enable us to keep them forever alive. We, as editors, in speaking for the entire class, repeat: Our aspirations are as trees - tall and stately, Whose top most branches are frail like our visions. As they grow and mature. Reaching ever upward they will attain a clearer perspective. Without their help and guidance we could never have reached this step towards our goal. Through our four years of high school we have had to overcome obstacles and we know that we were given unselfish and patient understanding by parents who helped us achieve success. So, Parents we dedicate this book to you in appreciation of your tireless efforts and to you we’ll prove the Best is Yet to Come .” 4 Principal Message to the Graduates: I congratulate you, the members of the class of '57, for having a- chieved the goal of graduation from high school. Success, both in and out of school, comes to those who have learned how to get along well with others, who are willing to do more than is expected, and who possess the necessary skills. It is my hope that the lessons you have learned here have equipped each of you with this winning com- bination. Earle W. URBANO Homeroom teacher and class advisor 1955-'57. iminiin 'in • KIM , rrTT rrri;ni ||||f||imn Class History At last we had reached the rung of the ladder where excitement began. It was the year 1953 and thirty eager Freshmen assembled into their home- rooms. At our first class meeting we elected Bill Peluso, President; Bob Turley, Vice-President; Barbara Conklin, Secretary; Richard Jones, Treas- urer; and Janice Goodermote, Student Council Representative. To raise that much needed money for our treasury we put on two food sales, sold basketball pins with the school name on them, and had a lot of fun in planning our first dance, which we called The Spring Swing. All of these activities proved very successful and the funds in the treasury began to increase. Our Sophomore year began with a flourish as we once again elected Bill Peluso for our President, Joyce Stevens, a new member of the class, became our Vice-President; Barbara Conklin, Secretary; Janice Wager, Treasurer; and Janice Goodermote, Student Council Representative. Once again we de- cided to sponsor a dance, and as a result, had much fun in planning one for St. Patrick's Day. After this accomplishment we decided to put on another one of those faithful food sales which proved very successful. We all were happy when our Junior year arrived. This year we elected Barbara Conklin, President; Gail Peluso, Vice-President; Janice Goodermote, Secretary; Janice Wager, Treasurer; and Robert Turley, Student Council Representative. Of course, everybody had a hand in planning the Freshmen Initiation, which resulted in a lot of laughs and fun a day we think no one will forget. Our magazine drive was very successful. We sold initial letters and also put on another food sale. Plans were put into motion for our Junior- Senior Prom. We finally decided on a French Cafe theme after much debate. That night left memories for everyone. From our class Bob Turley and Trudy Paff were elected Prince and Princess. This was the big moment we had all been waiting for. At last we were seniors. Gail Peluso was elected President; Robert Turley, Vice-President; Janice Goodermote, Secretary; Janice Wager, Treasurer ; and Carl Stowell; Student Council Representative. The big event of the year was our Senior Play, Clarence”, which proved to be a great success. Next came the job of financing and publishing our yearbook Exodus.” Of course, everyone looked forward to our trip to Washington. In parting, we keep in mind our class motto; The Best is Yet to Come.” 18 Senior Awards Editor Named D. A. R. Janice Wager, Editor-in-Chief of this annual, was given the honor of being named the DAR Good Citizen at Berlin Central this year. She was nomi- nated by her classmates and elected by members of the faculty to receive this award. She was chosen on the basis of dependability, service, leadership, honesty, and cooperation. Upon obtainnig this recognition, Jann was encouraged to submit an essay to the DAR state chairman, who in turn en- tered it in comoetion for scholarship. Goodrich Wins Award Betty Jean Goodrich was the receptient of the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow award at B.C.S. She received the highest mark in a written test which was administered to all senior girls in December, 1956. Betty Jean received a pin in re- cognition of her achievement. She, too, is eligi- ble for a scholarship. 19 Class Prophecy It is the year 1967. Just ten years ago a group of energetic and ambitious seniors graduated from the Berlin Central School. They have gathered together today for a reunion to talk over old times and tell about recent happenings. Since they needed a large place in which to gather, they chose the huge dairy farm belonging to Bill Hyatt. Along with his 800 head of cattle, Bill also has 12 fine race horses. His horse Native Prancer won the Kentucky Derby last year. First to arrive upon the scene are John Marra and Bob Turley. Soon after graduation John and Bob joined the Air Force. They were flying high until a cute little gem persuaded Bob to come down to earth and they are very happy with three jet pilots of their own. John is still flying high. Arlene Chittenden is next to arrive. As you will recall, Mrs. Chittenden is the former Arlene Yerke. Her husband Howard is head mechanic at a garage in Troy and Arlene is kept busy at home with their two sets of twin boys. Just driving up now is Betty Jean Goodrich. Yes, believe it or not B.J. has a license. In fact, she is now the proprietor of a driving school and delights in teaching other people how to drive. Her slogan is Never Give Up”. Margaret Hewitt is spotted by one of the crowd. Margaret entered business college and upon receiv- ing her diploma, wed one of the professors. Just what were you studying, Maggie? Tom Ward is next to arrive. Perhaps you have heard of Tom, as he became quite famous after he developed a small sports car that will do 350 miles an hour. But he slowed down enough to capture the heart of a girl in Ohio and they are quite happy racing all over the country. Joyce Stevens left for New York soon after graduation and got a job in a telephone office. But this just didn't seem to be the right profession for Joyce as she got all the wires so crossed that for two weeks New York City was without telephone service. Needless to say, Joyce decided to resign. Joyce is happily married now and to get even with the telephone company, she had a phone installed in every room in her 14 — room home. She drives them crazy making person to person phone calls to herself! Barbara Conklin got a job at Behr-Manning after she graduated and before long became private secretary to a rising executive. To make sure she wouldn't lose any Social Secutiry benefits, she mar- ied her boss. They are the proud parents of three sons. Next to join the reunion are Theresa Gardner and Thelma Knuetter. Theresa was married soon after graduation and has been traveling all over the world with her husband who is making a career of the Army. Thelma also walked down the aisle early in 1958 and is very happy taking care of her three little girls - triplets no lessl It has been rumored that Ken Jewett went to the dogs. That is true; he became a veterinarian and is now President of the American Kennel Club. Jessie Phillips surprised us all by being elected as the first U.S. woman Senator from New York State. Her biggest accomplishment to date has been in promoting a legislative bill to have Elvis Presley in- cluded in all history books. Mrs. Jack Styczynski is among the next to arrive. She is, as you know, the former Barbara Burdick. Jack and Barbara were presented with a very special gift from Santa Claus last Christmas -- a set of twin girls. After doing such a splendid job as editor of the yearbook, Jann Wager became interested in journalism and is now one of the top reporters in the country. She has made only one mistake so far, that was in pruning the name of the wrong candidate as victor after a recent presidential election. 20 Stubby Burdick went on with a singing career and is now singing for the MET. Not the Metropolitan Opera, you understand, but the Marvelous Everlasting Toothpaste Co. Oh well, you can't have every- thing, Martin Gorton decided to enter the literary field. His present job as gag writer for such well-known celebraties as George Gobel, Tennessee Ernie, and Jackie Gleason is well suited to him. Do you hear those screams? They're for the next arrival, namely Carl Stowell. Carl was spotted by a talent scout and as a result wound up in that fabulous city of Hollywood. He is starring in the Tarzan pictures. Maureen Atwater, Alice Grover, and Arlene Phillips create quite a sensation as they now join their former classmates. They were recently all members of the Women's Olypmic team that traveled to Australia. They captured a number of honors in the diving contest. They are all going to be members of another event soon, to be more specific, the wedding of Maureen to a certain sailor. Arlene and Alice are to be bridesmaids. Bill Peluso joined the Navy shortly after he graduated and this is his nrst visit to the States since he took his first cruise. It seems that he got so seasick that he stopped off at one of the Tropic Isles to recouperate. Unknown to Bill, a group of monkeys was playing a game of baseball with coconuts. Un- fortunately Bill was hit on the head with one of these and thinking that the enemy had attacked, immed- iately dug a fox hole and started fighting his own private war. Luckily a native of the island at long last rescued him. Dick Jones has been very successful and happy in his week. He started out as an instructor in a dancing school, but gave it up to become choreographer for a group of Mexican Jumping Beans. Alice Greeley and Stella Sweener are arriving now. Alice became a nurse and is very happy with her work. Stella is also very satisfied with her career as an interior decorator. If Bill Hyatt isn't careful she might start designing a more decorative stable for his race horses. Jan Goodermote and Eva Undritz both became teachers, but Jan is retiring very shortly to marry a certain other B.C.S. graduate. Incidentally, they hope to raise some detention addicts of their own! Here comes our little clown, the former Gail Peluso. Upon graduation, Gail went South in order to come into closer contact with the best of clowns, who, like her, were wintering at Sarasota, Florida, former home of Branum, Bailey circus. Instead of a clown she decided to wed a millionaire and raise some little clowns to carry on her tradition. Now we see Loretta Lingner arriving. Loretta went on to college and studied cafeteria planning and management. Guess where she is employed as assistant dieticianl That' right--at B.C.S. Walt Demick and Bob Michaels are among the last few to arrive. Walt and Bob formed a partnership and are the owners of a chain of pizza stands throughout the country. They are thinking seriously of opening a branch office on Mars. Estella Amidon, Edna Stevens, and Kay McMahon are the last ones to arrive. Estella became a child's nurse and is presently caring for Edna’s four children. Kay's mother retired from her job in the office at Berlin Central and Kay has taken over her job. Now that we are all together again, I am sure there is much to talk about. So let us conclude this meeting by reminiscing about the good old days at Berlin Central. 21 Who’s BEST DRESSED Jann Wager Bob Turley BEST FIGURE Barbara Conklin Bill Peluso TRUEST Arlene Yerke Ken Jewett MOST DEPENDABLE Barbara Burdick Richard Jones Kay McMahon Billy Hyatt MOST ATTRACTIVE Gail Peluso Bob Turley BEST CLASS IN B.C.S. For tins reason we present our prospective plans. On April 15, we will board a chartered bus and travel to Washington, D.C., where we plan to stay for five days and four nights and see the following places of interest; Capitol Building Library of Congress Supreme Court Building Washington Monument Franciscan Monastery White House Lincoln Memorial Arlington Cemetery Lee Mansion Tomb of Unknown Soldier Memorial Amphitheatre Rock Creek Park Zoo Bureau of Engraving Folger Library Mount Vernon Alexandria National Airport Jefferson Memorial Museum of Arts Sciences Pan American Union National Museum Archives Building Aircraft Building Marine Memorial This space is left for each Senior to record his own memories: 26 Senior Play Despite a sprained finger, several colds, and a sprained ankle, the class of '57 pre- sented Booth Tarkington's Clarence on the nights of December 13 15, 1956. As the stars darted on and off stage, they leit certain vivid memories with their audience. These might include the many scenes where Bobby and Cora Wheeler bicker over trivial things, as all normal teen-age children do. Billy and Gail Peluso did a tremendous job of portraying Bobby and Cora. An audience certainly couldn’t forget the performance of Bob George as Clarence, the intelligent but sloppy-looking” soldier who became a very important member of the Wheeler household simply be- cause he could drive mules without swearing. Remember Jan Goodermote as Mrs. Wheeler, who was crazy with jealousy as she was convinced that Mr. Wheeler, acted by Bob Turley, was in love with Miss Pinney? Both Jan and Bob gave spectacular per- formances. Speaking of Miss Pinney, we cannot forget the fabulous performance Jann Wager put out in spite of a sprained ankle. For remembrances' sake. Miss Pinney was Cora's governess, whom Mr. Stem was determined to win, but lost to Clarence. Tom Ward performed the role of Mr. Stem realistically. To conclude the cast, we must not forget Alice Grover, (and her wonderful accent) who played the part of Della, an Irish housemaid; John Marra as Dinwiddie, the Wheeler's butler; and Estella Amidon who took the part of Mrs. Martyn, Mr. Wheeler's able and efficient secretary. As we all know, a play cannot be presented without the hard work of many people beside the immediate cast. Because of this, we will always remember Mr. Francis Rooney and Mr. Edwin Gilcher, our very patient directors; Richard Jones, our stage manager, Richard Johnson, our lights manager, and Stubby Burdick, our wonderful prompter. Our beautiful sets were due to the many hours of hard work put in by Mr. Stanziano, Mr. Gossoo, and Mr. Konecny. Last but not least, we must remember Mrs. White and Mrs. Thompson, who helped us with all that make-up, and Mrs. Maxson for helping us with our programs. Class Will We, the class of 1957 of Berlin Central School being of sound mind and memory, and recognizing the uncertainties of life, make public and do so declare our last will and testament. It was felt that by having one squad whose standards were high, it would help to keep up the quality and force- fulness of the cheers. This resulted in students working harder to get on the squad and others were more eager to learn the cheers. Also the leadership and ability were more closely combined into a single unit of action. Thus, this lively group of girls, snappily uniformed in green and gold, formed the energetic nucleus which encouraged school spirit at all basketball games during the 1956-57 season. Mr. Mrs. Roy Kenyon 65 66 f 7 On behalf of the entire Class of 1957, we, the editors wish to say thank you to not only those people wlto have made our dream of a yearbook a reality, but also to all those who have helped us realize the many other ricli experiences we have had. Without the cooperation of our classmates and friends, our parents, the administration of B.C.S., and the many other helpful people of the community, such achievements as Clarence , our spaghetti suppers, the Washington trip, and this Annual would not have been pos- sible. Our years at Berlin Central have indeed been happy ones. They hold many memories which we shall cherish always. It is with thoughts such as these in mind tliat we have tried to make this the best possible yearbook ever. Once again, we say a great big THANKS to all who have made our school years such happy ones and who have made our activities and projects the successes which they have been. We hope you enjoy the EXODUS as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you. Janice Wager Janice Goodermote
