Bark row: Mr. Gicrnes, coach, johnny Booth, Gary Lewis, Terry Hill, Wil- liam Leyden, DanielRau, Larry Phinizy, Henry Bolz, Dale Patcnaudc, Peter Ruggicro, manager I 7011! raw: Paul Terwilliger, Frank Harris, Wfayne Taylor, Keith Taylor, Gerald D'Amore, Edward Iiru Wrestling is the oldest of all sports. Greek mythology told of Hercules wrestling with Anteus, Greek athletes wrestled at the earliest Olympic Games, and later Roman athletes strove for victory in the coliseum. Every nation has had some form of wrestling. Wrestling is a vigorous and stimulating activity which requires a high level of total body strength and endurance. This year, wrestling was introduced for the first time into the Berlin High School sports program. This new sport gave many boys the opportunity to participate in a varsity sport and not be hindered by size. It gave them a chance to compete against someone of their own weight in one of the twelve weight classes that make up a team. The weight classes ranged from 95 pounds and were at regular intervals to include an unlimited weight class for anyone over 180 pounds. The season consisted of two meets each against Wiesbaden, Frankfurt, Kaiserslautern, Baumholder, and Bad Kreuznach. The team had little success against the experienced teams, but managed a two meet sweep against another newcomer to the sport, Bad Kreuznach, scoring at least one individual win in every weight class against them. After the season schedule is completed the Northern and Southern Regionals are held. The top four placers in the regionals compete two weeks later in the USADEG individual and team meet which determines the wrestling champions of all the Army High Schools in Europe plus the guest Air Force schools from Wiesbaden and Bitburg. The 1963 Champion team came from Wfiesbaden with Frank- furt as runnersup. Frank Harris is shown cross fading, which is the counter to the single leg pick up.
